    I am remembering a kid I went to Jr and Senior High with. This was in a few decades ago in the US (early 1970s). Back then, Jr high was grades 7-8-9; HS was 10-11-12. He was tall, strong, an athlete’s athlete; starting in both football and basketball, a top player in both, university scouts, the whole bit.
    Then came HS - essential for scholarships. The HS football coach acknowledged all of that and then refused to have him on the team. It was his neck; it was “too long”. The coach said despite his athleticism and skill, the possibility of him breaking his neck was too great; coach was not willing to take that risk. Great. Coach.

      @Team33Team33 8 месяцев назад

      You KNOW the coach is VERY wrong when he talks about rugby as a CONTACT sport !!!
      Its a defense sport and all about AVOIDING contact and there are rules put in place to avoid as much contact as possible.
      Well played a game of rugby is rough, but should be harmless.
      Unfortunately - accidents happen when testosterone levels are uncontrolled and Coaches like this think it's macho to play rugby because it's a contact sport.
      This kid could have been riding his bike and have the same happen to him.
      I have had a similar acident in my life much later on and I know what it is to know that you WERE capable of something (walking, talking, writing) but that you now have to start from scratch again as that has been taken away from you.
      I wish him all success in his quest. Good luck. But that coach - "If you don't love contact ...." HE is the problem.

    Respect to both lads but especially Conor. I have a neurological condition & know the pain & frustration of seeing someone with the same condition progress with a treatment while you do not improve or it takes 10 times longer. The most insulting thing is when people assume I am not trying hard, not realizing I am trying 50 times harder than the average person & about twice as hard as a person with the same condition who is less affected. It is pure incalculable luck how our bodies react, I do not judge how you are affected but how you deal with it, both guys were willing to push their bodies to extreams & I hope it pays off for both of them.

    I broke my neck in a school Rugby game when I was 16, the accident could not have been avoided, but the severity of it could however have been lessened if we were conditioned better physically, and also if we were coached better on what to do/not do in lose-mauls i.e. always role out of the lose-maul, instead of standing up straight, when you intend to get out. It could prevent injuries to yourselfm and/or other players

      @DRS_ au And if I might ask, who would this mythical "victim nation be"? Also paraphrase or cite any part of the documentary where someone was blaming others.

    • @alwynnel6467
      @alwynnel6467 6 лет назад +4

      @DRS_ au Stop deflecting, and answer my question. You could have stated your opinion, regarding ABC's perceived narrative, in your original comment, instead you chose the lazy option (that does not require you to critically think it over, or back up your arguments), and simply brush this documentary of as people with a victimhood-mentality.
      I wholly agree with you that ABC has a specific agenda, or narrative that they try to put forward, but belittling the story of us who have suffered life changing injuries through sports, only makes you look like a doos (irrespective of what your actual point was).

(for example, i ran into a person head-first and the impact snapped my neck). and what were the physical consequences of your injuries? i live in america, so i don't really know rubgy, but it looks like such a violent game (this is only based on that episode i saw on friends) is it a combination of soccer and american football?

      @Tony Roberts i was a flight attendant who flew football players. Their bodies were all broken and they were in great pain. I went to grade school and highschool with Jack Snow. He was drugged up on dope at the school reunion because of football injuries. No sport is worth spending a life in pain because of a stupid ball!

    Our son Played league and union ,was bench pressing massive weights had seem to mature early and was naturally very strong but at times done damage because of this strength ,tackled another opposing second rower and it was game over and strait of to hospital and very frightening .To play hard contact sport you have to be in the best physical condition .Having said that the young body is still growing bones, ligaments ,muscles haven’t set till approximately 21years of age

  • @glenemma1

    This is Rugby Union. In Rugby League the scrum has been sanitised to the extent that it is a scrum in name only.
    The next step is to get rid of scrums altogether. I think League will do this. Union should seriously consider it too.

    So i wonder....what is the solution? It's a few boys out of tens of thousands perhaps more that play the sport without such injuries. Do we ban the sport for high school kids? Do we change the rules and make it less contact? Perhaps protective gear? I don't know. Do we ban contact sports all together?
    I'm almost certain that both Conor and Ollie don't want to change the sport at all, maybe they do. But I can't help but think about surfers that sometimes get attacked by sharks. They don't want to kill the sharks, they accept it as a potential risk.
    I hope both you guys make as full of a recovery as is possible and if nothing else, I'm sure you will be friends for life.

      I still don’t feel there’s enough injury prevention for rugby. Even though playing rugby is a risk there is so much that could be done to prevent serious injuries. Coming from a player who will suffer life long (less severe) injuries

    • @teijaflink2226

      The problem is that they where under aged and not really capable of making decisions like this. I'm not saying they should ban, but if I was a parent I definitely would not let my children play sports with a risk like this until they are 18 or the injuries would 100% be my fault.

    Any sport can b dangerous to its players & coaches..As long the players & coaches know the rules.. 🏈 ⚾️ & 🏀 .. could end up hurt for life.. but the players know what they r getting.. if u want be pro athlete.. 🏈 players give a lot to become super ball champs but they would almost always say thanks to a coaches most 🏈 careers are shorter because they get hit more than others most of them are lasting now 8 to 10 years and they call it a career. For baseball it’s different they have many weeks to go through when they finally become pro it’s more play every day ffor regular players and pichers they They get paid to play every five days. Basketball it’s more play every other day and hope you get noticed and you get paid more to be high end player.. all these guys get seriously hurt until they can’t go on anymore..

  • @rodwilliams4170
    @rodwilliams4170 Год назад

    At that age bones are not fully developed and are still susceptible to these type of injuries. To simplify it by saying it's ""just part of life" is really not the best way to approach this. Full bone-crunching contact sport is a very risky thing in any circumstance. Now there are the implications of CTE for head contact. Helmets should be mandatory across Rugby (both codes), AFL, Football (soccer) and every other full contact sport with the risk of this type of outcome. It really is a devastating thing but with support and advances in spinal cord injury treatments who knows what the future holds.
