  • Asha Kirkby from Skatefresh Virtual Skate School identifies the 7 most common mistakes that she sees with backward skaters of all ability levels. The problems identified here affect beginner backward skaters as well as intermediate and advanced level backward skaters and often one problem or mistake then causes another. This means that if you can fix one problem it will help you to correct others.
    Can you identify which of these mistakes you are making? Ask a friend to film you so you can see what's happening.
    00:18 - Insufficient knee bend
    01:01 - Inability to steer
    01:51 - Not lifting the skates
    02:57 - Favouring one leg
    03:51 - Incorrect body position
    04:36 - Weight on leading skate
    05:05 - Using continuous backwards crisscross

    Wow, can we take a moment to really appreciate the elegance and precision of her skating. Even though this is a demo you can tell she is a master! Ty for sharing your knowledge 🙏

      Bless you thanks. I'm en ex-figure skater on quads so am almost happier backwards than forwards. It is definitely one of my specialities and I just love to get people engaged with their backward skating. My smoothness is because I have correctly bent knees in every moment which allows the right weight distribution. That's always the secret!

    I'm certainly guilty of putting my weight on my leading leg 😅. Asha with great tips, as always.

      Don't worry, you're not alone. We ALL favour our stronger leg when we start backwards, but this has to be worked on so you end up with a more even ability to weight bare on both legs going backwards (in leading and trailing positions). In my Advanced How to Skate online course there's a whole chapter about this very issue and how to train it. I call it "the secretes to backward skating", because I think it is. Good luck with your less dominant leg!

    Mad skills, am currently trying to learn to backwards skate but on quads, I will be honest, I am finding it really hard but I am not 100% sure if its easier on inlines/ices skates or not but I did find ice skating transitions from front to back unbelievable easy after quad learning.

    My backwards flow could defo use some work. But t’s nice to know that I use one of your preferred methods -the single crossover/parallel turn. Just need to start working that cross under in to it.
    Great tips as always! 👏

    • @SkatefreshVideos
      @SkatefreshVideos 2 года назад +2

      Well done! Yes The addition of the crossunders then makes that backwards flow faster as you don't loose the speed on the parallel turns when no propulsion is happening, plus they look kinda cool. I haven't taught the crossunders as they are a large lesson which is part of the Advanced How to Skate course online. Summarising it would be somewhat irresponsible of me as get the crossunder wrong and it's pretty hideous way to go (stepping behind yourself and tripping yourself up). Good luck!

    I'm finding it hard it hard to work on backwards this year as being away a lot the places I'm skating there is always a lot people traffic and I'm not comfortable unless I know everything behind me is clear. Oh well, it 's good to get the theory drummed into my head at least!

    I love this but I can't do it unless I am turning, but the cross under is touchy so that might mean more practice or weight on trailing leg, but I will persist with it because I want so bad to do this in straight line. Thanks Asha!!!

    • @SkatefreshVideos
      @SkatefreshVideos 2 года назад +1

      Yup the cross under is one of the most difficult (simple looking) moves because as you say "touchy" is the knowledge that if you step behind you for the cross under and get that foot placement just 1-2cm wrong and you can trip yourself up. This is why the body is naturally hesitant to do it and it must be learned very slowly until the confidence and consistency is developed. Good luck!

    This miss, is bad A. Great coach! She makes me want to try 90’s in my next core 80’s I have the 273 frame. One day I’ll get some big 3’s really want to try the off road tire 3 with all of this coaching... imagine free skating on big tires in the Idaho snow :) take care all, I’ll keep dreaming.

    Side note: if you have rockered *FRAMES* (e.g. nn frames, rockin frames, endless frames etc) (not to be confused with wheel rocker) then you can do that 'weird lemoning thing' she talked about. however, if you're skating flat or with wheel rocker, then this video is perfect.

    So should i also use crossovers-crossunders technique for the forward stride? :D
    Very helpful information in fact, i've been through all these stages while learned to skate backwards myself. Now I'm mainly using crossover-parallel turn, never tried the crossunders yet.. good reason to try them:)

      That's an interesting question and a good topic for a video.....what does forwards crossovers + crossunders look like and is it a useful/viable option? It certainly makes for some interesting looking footwork but compared to normal striding it won't produce as much instant power or speed. I'l add this to the 2022 list for vids!
