I'm pretty sure I could prove the existence of ELO hell. But it's not the kind of hell most people complain about. I play anywhere from gold to diamond, tilt easy, don't always put in the effort to win, grief teammates, etc. I've played on pro teams in the days of smites competetive infancy. prize pools were less than 10k, and you had to use the website to see your elo (cant remember what "season" that was). That being said, ELO hell only exists for inconsistencies in your gameplay. Mostly, there is a lack of adaptation for variability in teammates' playstyle or capability. If you are a 10/10 smite bigbrain and you keep going for big plays that will stress your teams mechanical ability over and over, you are going to end up the feeder or the reason for a loss. The difference between a gold player and a high diamond player in a losing match is that the gold player will prioritize not feeding while the diamond player will focus on a team strategy to snowball into a neutral position. My stance on the basis for ELO hell; everyone in the lobby has 10/10 knowledge and mechanical ability. One team is 5/5 aggressive, the other is 2/5 aggressive, and 3/5 low-risk passive. The aggressive team will undoubtedly initiate the first major game turning fight. The split team will have 3 players who will want to "ward and wait till late" and 2 players who will try and force an opportunity to exploit the aggressive teams weaknesses. Right then and there, the game is set in stone, a loss. In a ranked setting, both of those playstyles can and will work, but when there is a split in playstyle or reactive tendencies, you're almost always gonna have a bad time.
