I really wanted to (and if I am here, a part of me still want to) like this game... But my experience is much like Heather's. I feel aimless, lost and bored sooner or later. If I have to explain why, I really can't say because is not one particular thing but is the feeling I get. Most RPGs have this initial fase when you feel under-powered and unskilled, getting killed by the most basic enemy unit, until you start to level up and become more badass and with more habilites to progress and basically to have fun, but I never got that far.
Either way, I was thinking to install the special edition and give it another try.

I love coming back to this game and getting sucked back into it . I have 4 saves and I haven’t even come close to the middle of the game on any of them .
    I’ve made 4 different characters
    1. The scarlet witch (vampire empress )
    2. Kratos , the heavy axe wielding god slayer
    3. Shang Tsung : the mad sorcerer
    4. And Thor god of thunder .
One of these days I’ll finish the story but I’ve turned off achievements , downloaded endless mods and am having a blast

Skyrim to me is worthy of a playthrough every few years. Obviously it has aged. People compare it to the handcrafted dungeons and strategic combat of Elden Ring or the immersive world of Red Dead where every npc actually acts human. But, it simplicity by today’s standards is a charm. You can make a specific build you like or become a god of everything. You can just room the world and not think to hard about your next strategy. I'll start off by saying Oblivion is my second favorite game after Halo CE so there will be some bias here.
Skyrim is okay. Many of the things people like it for Oblivion just does better.
Oblivion has better main and side quests, DLC (The Shivering Isles is one of the best DLCs ever), factions, magic, and a character creator.
    I'll explain these each briefly:
For the the main quest, I just enjoyed the threat of the Oblivion Gates more than Skyrim's civil war. Gates popping up on the map and changing the sky and deadra coming out made them a more present threat. I know people said they got a bit repetitive but I think at max there aren't but a few dozen gates if you do them all before you beat the main quest which closes them all. Skyrim's dragons are way more repetitive in comparison.
For side quests, just know there is a reason the Dark Brotherhood quest line is considered the best one Bethesda has made and not just in an ES game but in any of their games.
The Shivering Isles DLC had an awesome location and quests full of political strife and deadric beings.
The factions of Oblivion were overall better. The mages and fighters guild were better than the College of Winterhold and the Companions. (You could maybe argue the Companions just because werewolves but I still think I enjoyed the FG more). You also had the arena you could join and fight in.
Magic in Oblivion was simply better by leaps and bounds. It had way more spells especially in destruction and conjuration. Being able to use spells while holding a weapon was great. This means that a 2 handed weapon user could still use magic making healing easier and the need to use potions from menus less thus keeping gameplay flowing instead of constantly pausing to use the terrible "quick swap" thing Skyrim had. This is where I will also say Oblivion's weapon wheel just worked better. Sure it was very limited on how many items you could quick swap to but it was actually quick and didn't end up frequently pausing your game like Skyrim does. To top it off you can even create your own spells in Oblivion (no mods required).
Skyrim suffers from a low quantity of viable builds for late game due to a lot of the issues that comes from the poor magic implementation. Magic, especially destruction magic, scales horribly and at higher levels leaves you feeling very weak. As far as melee goes, it's way more practical to one hand a weapon and then have a heal spell than any other form of melee. For a damage spell replacement, shout works (shouts cannibalize a lot of potential magic abilities). Aside from that bows are your other viable option so there are really on 2 great builds in the game that don't require constant pausing to "quick swap"(I keep using "", because Skyrim's quick swap isn't quick at all where Oblivion's is, so no "" are needed there) to spells to heal or drink a crazy amount of potions/eat food to heal.
Finally to character creation. Skyrim's races barely matter. Most of the differences are minor starting Stat levels and if you become a high level you can level any skill up so those differences at the start just go away later.
In Oblivion you have to choose a race which has more racial traits, then a star sign and a class (or you can make your own). This gives you abilities you can only use once daily and you starting stats which are split into major and minor skills. Major skills level your character up when they level up and minor skills can still be leveled up but don't affect your character level.
Not only that but instead of spending perks to unlock abilities you just gain new abilities as you level each Stat so it feels natural whereas in Skyrim you can use destruction to level up and then spend that perk skill point in archery, it just feels disconnected to your actions. So in short Oblivion's character creator has way more meaning and impact on how you will actually play the game.
While neither game holds your hand like crazy they still do a lot. Especially compared to something like Elden Ring. Quest markers tell you exactly where to go and leave out a lot of the mystery of exploring to find things.
Skyrim might be what Bethesda is best known for but I think Oblivion was the perfect mix of simplicification from Morrowind's systems but not over simplified like I think happened to Skyrim.
Only 3 games have given me that sense of wonder: Halo CE, Oblivion, and then Elden Ring.
I know Elden Ring isn't the super quest and NPC heavy fantasy game like Skyrim but I think it has picked up the mantle as the current standard for fantasy open world games. The exploration is in a class of its own and the combat and character Stat system allows for way more viable builds.
Forgot to mention, I actually like that enemies scale to your level in Oblivion, it keeps the combat more engaging. In Skyrim its easy to become OP where hardly anything is a challenge.
So is Skyrim worth your time? Maybe. I would say if you have never played an ES game and for some reason refuse to play Oblivion then yes go for it. If not I would say play Oblivion, I genuinely think it's much better. If both those games are too old for you, play Elden Ring. If Elden Ring is too hard (and seriously, most people could beat Elden Ring, it might take time to gain the skills but it's not as hard as people make it sound) then play Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.
Lastly Jesus is Lord and I thank Him for everything.

Skyrim is a shallow, dumbed down, remake of Oblivion. Oblivion, on the other hand, is a shallow, dumbed down, remake of Morrowind.

I'm currently in my first playthrough of Skyrim. I'm about 300 hundred plus hours into the game! One of my biggest complaints with the game is the leveling and quest. I like the lore and idea of being the dragonborn, but the game is cluttered with quests that make it seem like there's substance when there really isn't.

Oh please dude….Skyrim is literally an improvement in every measurable category. Skyrim has better map design, more full and engaging environments , better combat mechanics, better sound design, and better quest design. The ONLY reason people still say morrowind (or oblivion for that matter) is better, is nostalgia. Skyrim IS Morrowind, but improved in literally every way.
You can enjoy the tedious quest skill walls, clunky combat, and Barron world if you want to…but let’s stop acting like Skyrim is “dumbed down” simply because it’s game design doesn’t get in its own way.

    • @edwardpaddock2528
      @edwardpaddock2528 2 месяца назад +1

@@FollowerOfChrist144 The map is horrible, as are the dungeons. The environments are dull, boring, and lifeless. The combat is just cut & paste from the earlier games, just with less complexity, and less weapon types. The sound is about the same, and most of the music is also just cut and pasted. The quests are unoriginal, dull, and repetitive.
Morrorwind is better in all but graphics .
Tests have been done, in Skyrim it is harder to fail, than it is to succeed, because it has been dumbed down so vastly much, to appeal to a 'general audience'. (aka people who are bad at games.)
