Thank you for posting the video. I have been using Mate for a couple months now and you have given me several new ideas to make using it more enjoyable and efficient.

Cool. I hope you are enjoying it. I only used Mate a few times, but after running this video I think I might test it out a little more. I like the options that I found in there.

Mate ( not Cinnamon) seems to be able to run with Compiz and I like that possibility. Also in Caja the file browser it is possible to change the color of each icon separately. I find that helps with aesthetics on wallpapers by matching themes. (only on default theme it seems).

I will have to look at that. I know with KDE I can also change the icon colors for specific folders.

A little hint on GIMP: If you are going to save an image back to its original filename (overwriting the original), don't use the "Export" menu item but the "Overwrite ..." menu item. Saves you having to confirm overwriting.

I'm having trouble with cinnamon so can you reccommend to a newb like me MATE or kde or Xfce? I have an intel i5, which has mixed reviews about reliability and performance. My main problem is that neither the toolbar nor the icons show up after a usb boot. This is unacceptable.

That is unusual. In that case try xfce. I think that one more than Mate. You might avoid budgie because that is based on the same core as Cinnamon
