The new Independent MiD Trucks with an inverted/reverse kingpin. We got some pairs of these trucks and got to ride them for almost a month before they release to the world! Here's our review on the trucks, what we love, what we don't love, when newer versions come out (hollows, highs & more).
Find out if Hi trucks are coming? Are they the same geometry? Are Hollows coming? How do they work? What does Levi think of them? And much much more.
What are your thoughts on the new Indy reverse kingpin? Dope or Nope?!
Here's a little article with all our most frequently asked questions on the trucks:
shop.shredzshop.com/blogs/blog/new-independent-reverse-kingpin-mid-trucks/
I’m happy with the kingpin clearance and hanger with standard indys but still excited about these.
I'm thinking I might have to try them in 144 on a 8.25" board. That way I can still keep the 149 titaniums for my park set up with the 8.5". Hay any one riding old school 215s on a fish board.
It's looks like the old stage 8 baseplates. Before they changed the kingpin in the stage 9 faster to knock out kingpin. I was hoping the kingpin was hollow. More then likely a Krux down low hollow would screw right in.
Does nobody else remember grind king Allen key kingpins from about thirty years ago? THIS ISN'T A NEW INNOVATION!
@@edwardbentley3512 my brother had them. And the bottom nut keeped moving around. He had the hollow base grind king's. Then years later I found a shop that did the invention kingpin. You had to hammer a nut into your trucks. I was lucky as I had a foot long bit of rail road track to use as a anvil. Then around 2005 all trucks change to the different kingpin. I'll say because people hat been going and buying parts from a hardware store. And not truck company.
I've always used Grind King kingpins in all my trucks I've been inverted since the late 80s.
When you see a video that makes you old... The greatest "invention" from Indy, the inverted king pin... REALLY???? My 90's Venture trucks have inverted king pin, grindking, krux, film etc... I was 20 years without skating and my my first complaint when choosing new trucks "why thunder, venture and indy dont have inverted king pin?", but i guess if indy makes it's kinda of a big deal... The good news, maybe now all brands bring the inverted king pin back.
I think it’s just big news cause it’s Indy doing it. Seems a little out of character for them, but hey if it works, no one will be complaining.
I'm not sure if this should be thought as or said as if it is the greatest invention even I'm not fan of some of independent both the kind of cross if it is ,free, mas , on, kind of logo or what ever strange or crusader remind me of some bad part of history while we in west are quick to see other religion as either less civilised or even see some as more violent when our own present and past politic .is full of violence and control economic control of less strong countries that we benefit alot from. Also attitude of punk rock kind of stuff not promote best good lifestyle for good future and thinking of good way of living while still skating and keep good and strong , pujm rock destroy all everything one self attitude all way like smoking l, drinking all, drugs end like punk rock alcoholic or coke weed head, wasted thing as is bad I dont agree and am not happy for which is too much part for some part of people in skate culture, ( even tho if course not all) all this said to independent turns good and I in general like how they skate just crooked grinds I think I remember and got impression that i like venture, for invention to say about this I dont think one can necessarely say it as biggest invention new things since 20 years have been different models (stages) of independent and new adding to trucks for different kinds here is examples : independent hollow kingpin and same also with hollow axles czme to be and now also more expensive but what I heard about as to sound like nice trucks with titanium axles also not to forget hollow trucks you can get normal model and forged (more light than normal) badeplate model. But yes I would have wished this inverted king pin would have come earlier but I remember I used to know one who had old grindking who I think had problems with keeping them hwo he wanted them I think they did loose them self I can't remember if it was grindking trucks them selves of grindking kingpins he had installed that was having issues like this,
@@s.ibnihenry.abdullah2165 maybe you need an inverted kingpin cuz u sound like a cracked nut
Yeah, i actually use inverted GK in mid 2000's, wth indy?
Destructo trucks had em too..
me and my friend have watched every single 14 things video. best thing ever
Stoked you enjoy them! I feel like half the people love em and half tell us we're kooks haha
@@ShredzShop Ignore the kooks y'all the greatest yt skate channel 🤝
I bought the inverted kingpin + baseplate set and put my titanium axle hangars on em this last summer. They were slightly heavier than what I was used to and I had to purchase Indy hard cylindrical bushings because my bones conical hards wouldn't tighten at all, but they're pretty much the perfect truck now. I highly recommend hard bushings if you like to tighten your trucks at all with these. So far, no hangups. Solid turns. Bulletproof. 👊🏻
It’s about damn time! I started replacing my kingpins with GrindKing inverted king pins in my Independent Trucks in 1989... it’s common sense!
Replace the crappy cheddar cheese bushings with Powell Hardcore bushings and there is an ultimate skateboard truck that won’t hang up as easily and the inverted kingpin won’t strip out.
Someone needs to start a Go Fund Me so we can get Levi a new shirt.
I can’t wait! And even better news that they are coming out with just the baseplate/kingpin combo. Thanks for always bringing us the insights of the industry Shredz Shop!
Stoked you enjoyed!!
This was standard 20 years ago. But from what I heard, they stopped doing this because the weak point of a kingpin is the thread. And as the thread goes through the baseplate it means less flex, so if the kingpin come to break, the threaded part is what will break. While if you have the hard part through the baseplate, it should be more solid. But like, grade 8 kingpins are quite solid these days so it's nice they bring it back.
Interesting, we'll see how these Independent ones last. I remeber the Grind King ones had some weird marketing thing they claimed made them stronger, they were forged or something...
Grindking king pins did this 30 years ago
Grind King invented this. They were almost impossible to break. I rode them in ‘91. They also happened to be installed on Indy 159’s back then.
Yup, I remember grind king and they had this inverted kingpin.
I had so many pairs of the. Best invention ever. Wondered where they went.
I swear we had this shit like 20 years ago. maybe I'm remembering things wrong, but someone made a rounded top allen key tightening kingpin that you could install on your trucks. Just had to knock out the normal kingpin and install it.
Yeah man I had Grind Kings 20 years ago or more (I'm old lol) with the domed top and Allen key. But good to see with these you've got the option of Allen key and hex cause once ya ground the Allen hole a bit they were impossible to take out. And Allen keys on anything just kinda suck in general lol.
I been waiting a long time for this vid it’s tomorrow finally
Let’s go!!! Grind Kings we’re the best! Going out and getting these now😍
Glad you went over the tightening aspect, I’m tall and weigh over 200 and have had inverted kingpins before an felt like they never tightened enough
Ever try using harder durometer cushions? Should help from over tightening on ones that feel too soft for you 🤘
I use to buy inverted kingpins early 2000 for my Indy's and what ever I was riding. It was easyer to hammer in a bolt with a broken kingpin. A few pros and cons but as truck companys changed the bottom of the kingpin and I couldn't find inverted K.P I just did what every one else had to do. A grind the nut and K.P.
Due to covid it hard to get newer skate stuff in Australia. I assume it's the same everywhere. I'm wanting to get Krux hollow downlow kingpins and fit them to my Indy's and thunders. As the nut is only just in the way. For smiths on parking blocks.
GrindKing king pins are heat tempered and virtually unbreakable. I have been riding the same pair of king pins since 1989 now in my third set of Indy 169s... I still have my very first Indys from 1978 on a Pocket Pistols downhill slalom board!
bout fucking time they brought this concept back
The brand Grind King were the first to have an inverted kingpin, then Krux released their version, but they used Allen key. Royal trucks released a kingpin just like the one indy is using now. I'm a big fan of this type kingpin. It's cool Indys finally released theirs.
I thought my inverted kingpin was normal... thank you for normalising and shedding light on this serious taboo issue!
#normalizeinvertedkingpins
Damn Levi, is that you skating in those clips?? You're a ripper, for sure! Great video.
I had Grind King kingpins on my Indys in the early 90s and they looked/worked exactly the same. I always thought it was a good idea.
I've been waiting for this for months
I used to invert my kingpins so to not catch them in a grind and come to a complete and instant stop and go flying, then Grind king came out with their Inverted king pins with a domed head to take an allen key, recently I started skating again and I purchased some grind king trucks.
I want them 1000%. I have the grey blue Gonz Indy's now.
PS Levi shredzzzz!! 🔥🛹
Grind King invented this. Their new disruptor trucks are super good.
GK was fun back in the day. I have some of their newer trucks. Just ordered the Houston Skateboards coffin complete with the GK's on them too. :)
I put grind king king pins in my indys through the 90's these are sweet perfect height for me
Used rock grind kings back in the mid 90s. They were sick!
If it works it works, I'm glad everyones starting to do it.
I'm definitely getting me some of those base plates and kingpins Spring 21.
I just had to look up at the TV right when he does a Tre Flip. Nothing ever changes
Keep it up! Love the videos!
Glad you like them!
Just realized I watched this then bought a set of mids and a deck from you guys without noticing this was your video
Definitely about to get these!
When you have an innie but everyone else has an outie.
Story of my life...
I think my first pair of indy's didn't even allow you to replace the kingpin and when I broke the kingpin I had to buy a new truck :( Glad to see Indy solve the height/geometry issue that other inverted kingpin truck makers didn't even attempt to fix.
nice job, good work!
I ride tight trucks so when I tightened them the kingpin was trying to push through the board. Replaced the bushings with the hard ones and they helped a bit. Then as you grind them, sometimes the allen gets stripped but that's what the nut shape is for! ...until the bushings are so tight they bulge around the actual nut. Damn. But ppl don't usually run into my challenges.
I saw pictures of the a mid Sid by side with a normal kingpin and the clearance difference is minimal. I also saw a pick of a krux pin being used instead of the Indy pin and it’s looks magnificent. Zero kingpin sticking out. The hangar looks a lot meaner than a normal Indy hanger. The trucks look great
I think I'll wait for hollow's now that I know it's a thing. I need 2 setups these days. My current 159/8.75 park board and then a 149/8.5 board next year. I was a krux only rider forever, funny how things change.
Good to see. I Haven't skated for like 15 years so I'm a few years behind the times lol. I had Grind Kings 20 years ago or more (I'm old lol) with the domed top and Allen key. But good to see with these you've got the option of Allen key and hex cause once ya ground the Allen key hole a bit they were impossible to take out. And Allen keys on anything just kinda suck in general lol.
Go back a decade or three, stage 5 169 hanger with grind kings, supercush and g&s metal base plates. Perfect truck at the time.
So something GrindKing pioneered in like 1988 is finally catching on.... lol we used to buy the GrimdKing inverted ones and install the, all the time, was great got pool coping lol this is hilarious
Can’t wait to try these, I’m normally one to try new things but the last year has opened my eyes a bit, like the flight decks, some new things really work.
Unbelievable, I really thought they would be a game changer.
The flight decks are the best thing to ever happen to me lol, I’m about 200lbs and I tend to stomp my landings , I was snapping decks in about a week just from flat ground kick flips, on the flight decks in no longer maters that I don’t land over the bolts, honestly makes me way more willing to try new stuff now
@@dentonramsey8726 I’m gonna order one, try it out, I too like to stomp my landings Mike Mo style, just catch a trick mid air over a hip and stomp it bolts!
15 years ago when I bought a pair of Silver trucks they inverted kingpin that you could just tighten with a regular skate tool. Obviously Grind King has been doing it for longer but I always disliked the allen wrench as it was an extra tool most people didn't carry on them.
Funny how things come full circle in design.
Grind King has been making this type of truck for over 20 years and I been riding Indy's w/ Grind Kings ever since. The way you convert them is buy hitting the king ping out the old Indy truck then put the Grind King in and tight w/ a flathead screw driver. The problem w/ this method if ur trucks r to tight u have to take the truck off and re-tighten it and put it back.
Good video keen to try these just that Indy lows are 48.5 mids are 52 forged baseplate highs are 53.5 and classic highs are 55
Yeah I am surprised that they haven't edited or out a note about a correction somewhere, I just read "that currently asked questions" blog on their site about it and it's still the wrong information, I guess in canada they measure things their own way maybe???? Don't they know this continent ain't big enough for two different size millimeters!?!?!?!?
About time haha use to love grindkings back in the day but indies have always been #1 ☝️
GrindKing
Calvin Kenney cheers dont even no how that happened lol auto correct
I’m an og skater love indy an just recently switched over to the forged hollows an man I love them they are lite so I’m trying to get use to them still but I would be dwn to try these mids for sure change maybe scary but it’s worth it!
ain't gonna lie I've been using the trucks inverted Kingpin that are Hollow goes kick ass man they're great they're really low profile I used to use the grind King ones those are great too but I mean I've been using them downloads out the Crux inverted Kingpin just using J-B Weld can I get the nut on the bottom of the base plate and boom works like a charm
I’m 100% interested
Man when I was a kid and much lighter I just skated. Now that I know more and pay attention to things a lot more my OCD took over. I'm so used to counting treads on my kingpin to make sure both trucks are tightened the same. This would be my double check when I lost track of how many turns I made to tighten everything to my liking. With the Inverted Kingpins now how am I going to double check. I guess I'm going to have to count the turns. Also has anyone swapped the cushions on these Indy Mids? Was it a pain? Is it compatible with the Indy conical bushings? Being a heavier rider I almost always switch to the 94 duro cushions or the 96 duro cushions from the get go.
I had Grind King inverted kingpins in my Indy's 30 years ago! What took so long!?
Yep and when I get the base plates I'm going to replace the goofy bolt with a grade 8 button head bolt.
With the non inverted kingpins, I use the number of threads that’s showing ( or not showing ) to gauge how tight / loose my trucks are when making adjustments, how does it work with these? Do I have to take them off my board to see the number of threads with the adjustments I made?
Honestly, I don't know why this didn't happen 20, or more years ago... This makes so much sense, at least to someone who works in a manufacturing/assembly job(me lol)
It did in the 90s i would get grind king king pins and put them in any truck i wanted
it did, check out a dude named RadRat and his video about Grind King.
I guess it comes down to whether you prefer an innie our an outie.
The deadbolts trucks... the gullwing trucks.... grind kings... and some oldschool truck company's had these back then. Inverted king pins.
i'll wait for a high forged hollow version.
Solid appendage jokes on the intro 🤙🤣
I have same issues tightening them up.. I bet as soon if u grind them down alot be even more harder to tightening and losing them up.. probably grind them off with cutting tool.. I wish they had way on RUclips to send pictures up to u guys so i can send u pictures of the bolts i have and my skateboard collection i had built up to.. maybe i have 100 skateboards I'm into old school deck because I'm oldschool.. Lol!!
These are sweet!
I have a lot of inverted grindking kingpings in my vault... I dont like them... But that new design looks a lot better . i used to cut the head to make it look like a nut to use a regular skatetool
Never tried Royals Mike mo?
Krux did the inverted kingpin about 15 years back .. was my first set of new trucks I ever got and they rode amazingly . Good to see Indy recycling another company's old ideas . I also had a lot of silver trucks with the inverted kingpins about 12 years back . Nothing new here 😂😂
You do know that Krux and Indy are manufactured by the same company. It’s a new feature for the Indy Brand. Not NBD
Looking forward for the hollow one. How r they gonna put allen key block with hollow hole?
I had silver with inverted and liked it
Levi I’m wondering if the kingpin was tightened up to your deck. Like does the bolt go through the nut under the baseplate? I tried tightening my krux dlk trucks but they got super hard to tighten at a certain point and I had a suspicion it was cause the bolt was going into my deck. Little while later I took the trucks off and had these two rings grooved into my deck from the bolt haha.
Yeah I'm figuring that's what's happening too. Three options I can see. Drill deck to allow the point to go in further. Take the kingpin out and shorten it. Buy harder bushings.
Oh maybe four options. Add washers.
My question is: On the krux dlk trucks the kingpin is inverted but because it’s not pressed in like normal kingpins it has this little wiggle spot where your truck moves but you don’t turn. Is it the same or is the nut snug in the base plate to keep the kingpin from moving and giving it that “dead zone” is what I like to call it. I love the way indys turn and feel so I’m kinda on the fence about buying them
Kinda Grind King status!!! 💯
Two months in, and the component that holds the kingpin screwed in place is wobbling causing a click/bump when I turn. Switched to Ace
That 5050 5050 was 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Gonna try and grab these from my local. Been doing a ton of slappies and those things destroy my kingpins
Stoked you're repping your local!
might try the mid pro hollows, Been trying some 6.1 ventures one some shaped boards and the 159 standards are starting to feel heavy when going back. Going to have to try some harder bushings on the mids to get them to feel tighter or how i ride the 159 standards w.o having to worry about tuning the mids nut too much, Or indy conical bushings possibly w.o a bottom washer etc. To lower the nut clearance more but keep a good ride.
What about the bushings? do they comme with the standard idny bushings? i go through 3 pairs of bushings (indies yellow) per year but on the vid they kinda look smaller?
This come with the standard medium Indy bushings. You can get a ton of different durometer bushings from Indy and 2 different shaped bushings.
1 day soon, hopefully i can get ahold of that new indy trucks..& i think mids are the way to go for me..on d side note, whats your Height Levi?
Does anyone have a tip on how to tighten these? Because I can only tighten them to a certain point, but I don’t ride too loose so I’m kinda stuck rn.
The grinding sounds are funny
thanks for the review 1 question tho i had the krux inverted kingpin when i tighten them it started digging into my board
There ones are pretty deep, unless you tightened them like a cm deep
I saw these yesterday at a skate shop
Back in the early 1990s, we used to flip the kingpins and made our own inverted kingpin.
Does anybody think that the forged mid hollow 50.5 is too low?
If I skate around a lot is it likely to get dirty?
ohhhhh yeaaaa! say inverted kingpin one more time ;)
Inverted kingpin one more time ;)
I couldn’t buy any trucks online because everything was sold out during the time I ended getting supreme indies.
Grind King out of Venice CA had the concept decades ago. Familiar?
I bought these new and they won’t tighten do I need to break in the bushings more?
They are kinda hard to tighten, you could try putting harder bushings in if you're really struggling with it.
My 90's and early 20's Spitfire trucks have inverted king pin... what's new here? (i ride Indy's now).
Dynamic and yellowood fb trucks have inverted kingpins
Be cool if they had a good threaded base plate so if I wanted some extra length I could get it
Bit old, but always new for someone.. the reason you might not get trucks tight enough, is because that inverted kingpin runs out ot threads. Mids has orginally orange, medium bushings and lower one seems to be slightly thinner than the red ones I bought as replacement.
Have one old pair of indys from early 2000, had to replace kingpins back then, used standard kingping inverted, just hammered the nut into socket on those baseplates. And it worked all just well. Those old hexhead kingpins had a lot longer threads than these new inverted ones.
Yeah man, I just got some but can't tighten them enough
So what size wheels are good for mids
Reminds me of the Grind King days.
I hear rumours that Grind King is back!
If you tighten an inverted kingpin too much it will bore the bolt into your deck. I use to see this with grindking trucks
That’s how trucks in the 70s were setup with inverted kingpin.
I've been thinking about getting new trucks but its been pretty hard to find Indy hollow 139's lately, might just stick it out till the spring and wait for the high hollow version of these.
Canada or US?
I think Grindking did a great job with inverted kingpins. I dont like the construction from Independent!
What are the pro and cons of using mid size trucks
Ur actually a good skater
Can you fit bones hard bushings in them? I know they would pop out of some older indies after a bit of skating
Same bushing geometry as the highs so bones will work equally as well as standard indys
Maybe try harder bushings instead. The inverted kingpin might be smashing into ur board if you tighten too much
