Well done?Thanks, Elizabeth!!!
Loved the information, but I have a question. I have created a form to get information for a new hire. One of the things requested is the social security number. I have three text boxes and have restricted the number of characters to three. How do I get it to automatically tab to the next text box once the three character max has been reached?
I love soft soft so so so so much!

Is there a way to make a question, that when answered makes other questions appear?
Hello! Thanx for this great video! 2 questions...
Silly one first, what is the main difference between combo box control and drop down list?
And second is more technical.. i teach and would like to create a drop down list populated with all the standards i use to teach...is there a way to create a list where i can select more than one item?
Thanks!
Hello Alexandra,
Technically they are not the same. A Combo box is a drop-down list that you can edit. Here is a wiki link that I found useful: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combo_box
As a teacher, there are several ways to approach your documentation requirements. Consider using Excel to create the Combo Box. Excel has more tools for one-to-many relationships. Word, not so much. This example is a time sheet but the concept is the same. In your example, you would lookup the standards.

Please let me know if I have answered your question.
Thanks, eBeth
Is there a way to keep the content in an unfilled content box from being printed? So if I do not fill out a field I don't want "Click here to enter text" printed on the form. I am using Word 2013.
Hello Tery Graves,
Yes, this option can be found in the Word Options. Please go to File->Options->Advanced and scrollllllll down to the bottom of the page. There is a check mark that sez: Print only the data from the form.
Your question is more sophisticated. All of Microsoft Office uses Visual Basic for Applications, so it can be done. However, Word would not be my choice for programming. I would rather use Microsoft Access! The tools are better and there is a Table to save the Form Data.
Thanks, eBeth
@@elizabethnofs2986 Are you suggesting that if we want to create a fillable word template, with lots of text in between fields that are fillable, MS Access is the best way to do this? Or are we thinking fillable PDF. One challenge with PDF is that it's difficult to allow a section that is fillable up to many pages (yet not make the form field size multiple pages while blank)
can this word document can be converted into PDF format with all those developer options
Hello Nelson Raj,
Yes, you can fill in the blanks and print this form as a PDF. However, the Controls will no longer function in the PDF file. I have often designed the Forms in Word because I appreciate the Themes, formatting and layout options. Then used Adobe Acrobat Professional to add the Controls. Good question!
Thank you for asking. eBeth
what should I do if I don't want people to be able to type on the drop down box at all, that they can only choose from the item I provided? Even if I restrict editing, lock the word documents and only allow filling out the form, people still are able to type in the drop down box and not choose from the it.
Good question. When you are working with Forms you can program the Controls so that the Contents Cannot Be Edited.
Say there is a Combo Box on your Form. Select the Combo Box and go to the Developer Tools->Properties. About half way down the Property Sheet is an option: Contents Cannot Be Edited.
That’ll work. eBeth
Wow thanks for the quick reply! But, when I do that, the drop down box is not available to choose item as well. That little triangle on the side disappears when I choose Contents Cannot Be Edited.
The best answer is to use the right tools for the right job. Microsoft Excel uses Data Validation to limit to the list. Microsoft Access also has Properties that can restrict a User's ability to edit the data.
Microsoft Word fills a niche for quick and easy Forms. The Developer Tools in Word are very simple. You need Access to really get specific with Form Controls I have some videos on RUclips that show Forms in Excel and Access if you wish.
Thank you for your help!
in how manys we can create form
Annie's Adventures too I’ve had soft for over a year. Stagnant‼️. But after tNice tutorials video I’m nice tutoing and rolling
Can this work be done using microsoft 2010
YEs, the steps are the same in Microsoft Word 2010 and Word 2013.
Thanks, Elizabeth
How do I restrict characters in a rich text control?
what I meant to ask is can I limit characters in the text box? ... am I using the correct control, or would you insert a text box? I want this form to be fillable but restrict the editing and length of a response.
Microsoft Word is not the most effective choice for creating and programming Form Controls. It is a very simple form designer. I appreciate the Combo Box and Date Picker tools in Word: They are little Controls that are easy to use.
Microsoft Access is the best tool for creating Forms that control and prompt the Users' selections. Excel uses Data Validation to compare the Users' input and limit or restrict the responses.
Good question. Thanks for asking. eBeth
