Fun fact about this performance: usually Teller does not get out of the tank at the end. Apparently, the producers of SNL were rather insistent that Teller get out of the tank on the air, but after Penn and Teller pushed back on that idea, they settled on not pulling Teller out. However, during the performance, something went wrong with Teller's oxygen supply, and for a significant portion of the trick he actually WAS holding his breath. He gave the crew his signal to get him out and that's why we see Teller get out of the tank at the end of the trick. This was the first performance of this trick live, and so they've of course perfected it since then to prevent that from happening, including making the selected card signed. This is definitely one of my favourite Penn and Teller tricks, for sure.
Actually he didn't signal the crew, Lorne Michaels insisted on Teller getting out at the end, to show everyone he didn't die. P&T were not happy about it, but later Teller was thanking Lorne for making them wimp out. (Teller told this story in their book "How To Play With Your Food.")
Fab piece of trivia, @Branden Sugden! You can see where the trick went wrong at 5:19 and 5:37. At 5:19, there is an evacuation of air from his goggles which I suspect accidentally let in water. At 5:37 you can see that his goggles are now half filled with water, which would prevent him from breathing properly.

So even in this performance, when there was a mechanical problem and Teller actually almost did have to tap out, the worst danger they were facing was looking like idiots on live national television.

2:28 is the moment Penn took the 3 of clubs from his pocket. Then a forced selection. Teller breathes through a tube that runs through his sleeves. The face mask allows him to do so
I love that Penn was the one to open the tank because he seemed to realize in that urgent moment that he was the only person there tall enough to just reach up and remove the top. As a 6 foot 6 individual myself, i hope my height randomly saves the day in the future based solely on my ability to casually reach something high up.
I think I know how it's done. The mask itself allows Teller to breathe, there must be some airflow through the nose piece. Also, when Penn has a fake fit and tried to get the key, he slips Teller the card. Teller then inserts the card into the mask when he's turned away.
There's no need for Penn to slip Teller the card since the card was forced. The three of clubs has been their "we've forced a card" signal for a while. Teller would've already had it
Brian Brushwood does a very similar thing with his straitjacket routine, right? It’s supposed to help with effect, but if I were to guess it’s more of an inside joke to claim “slightly better than Houdini” as part of a routine. People who it works on don’t check, people who know are aware that magicians constantly and intentionally BS the claim.

It's funny. They've shown us so much it's easy to spot Penn's moves. Left hand palms the card from his pocket to the top of the deck. False shuffles, card stays on top. He goes over to Teller for the hand off. Still brilliant and years ahead of everyone at the time.
I don't know why but the noise that exits Penn's face at 4:53 when Teller throws the key at his head kills me every time -- "Black card? A face car-EUGHJUJUKAY"
The later revision of this trick is definitely way better than this version and more impressive (and safer for Teller.) This trick is probably my favorite magic trick though.
the most amazing thing about this is that this was a time when penn pulls out a switchblade an inch from a guys face on live tv and didn't immediately be gunned down by someone
During the scuffle for the key between pen and teller, penn passed teller the card... and the mask most likely contains breathing tubes feeding into pen's nose, hiding under the strap of the mask, and looping down his neck, to an air source somewhere
I think it’s easier for teller to have a 3 of clubs in the tank the whole time. I think the card trick part is forcing the audience member to choose the three of clubs
If you listen to episode 97 of the magicians podcast, teller talks about this performance and how it really did go wrong. He got very close to drowning by the end of this trick.

@@NxDoyle He doesn't mention nearly drowning. But does mention how it was the first time they did the trick and that they didn't have the same values on safety as they do now.
Current record for holding your breath underwater: 24 minutes, 37 seconds.
Anyone else getting all the Saturday Night Live shows in their recommended after watching the vanity video?
Nope. But I watched way too many P&T videos after that one.
yes
Yes
i just wonder how no 1 noticed that the girl in red is madona....
Thats why i clicked the video - thought she would be participating in the magic trick
I noticed, I just didn't care
That Madonna hoodie is the most 2019 sweatshirt I ever did saw
This act evolved to such a better one. Nice to see the original.
the most amazing thing about this is that this was a time when penn pulls out a switchblade an inch from a guys face on live tv and didn't immediately be gunned down by someone
Bravo!
I made it to 1 minute, my chest started convulsing at that point.
Teller always does the dirty work
Teller is super.
Madonna sure nailed that intro line.
At 4:20 when he went to try to get the key, he placed the card on top of the tank
After watching their masterclass it's great to think that I could do the 3 of clubs trick as well.
@@tsm2112 This is accurate.
These guys have closets full of threes of clubses!
The little one is funny he make me smile ☺️
i am happy he breath praise God!!! 🫣
Madonna was stunning when she was younger.
If you listen to episode 97 of the magicians podcast, teller talks about this performance and how it really did go wrong. He got very close to drowning by the end of this trick.
I've listened to that episode with Teller. He describes feeling anxious, sure. But he says nothing about nearly drowning, nor does he imply it.

@@romainsavioz5466 While I thank you for sharing the link, it means nothing without your opinion on the subject, or even an indication of why you shared the video.
Having watched the upload, I'm more confused. There is nothing in the upload that would require me to revise my comment regarding the Teller interview. Even if it transpired that Teller _had_ nearly drowned, it doesn't change the substance of my comment.
@@NxDoyle shut up
@@NxDoyle He doesn't mention nearly drowning. But does mention how it was the first time they did the trick and that they didn't have the same values on safety as they do now. Either way, he realised he was in danger, due to the water entering into the mask and him gesturing to the stage hand to get him out.
You can see that Teller's goggle (breathing tube) filled up with water above his nose, and based on your comments, it really looked like he couldn't breathe. How very dangerous, and how very dedicated!
For the few people who may not have seen it, search for the much funnier version they did with John Cleese picking the card.
@ 3:18 OMG is that Greg Thompson with the deck of cards?
Teller is the best.
yeah for real out of all the times I've seen this trick and variations of it, this is the only one that I think shows Teller getting out. I think that was probably a SNL network thing, like okay we can have some one "die" on screen live :D
Actually, something went wrong during the trick and Teller was legitimately unable to breathe for the last minute or so of the trick! That’s why everyone jumped into action to get him out; you can actually see the water filling the mask and covering his nose at the end with the card reveal.
The most mindblowing thing for me is that I could've held the world record for holding my breath underwater 😅
Just saw this first time, didn't look at comments. I assume there is a tube going from the mask up Teller's arm so he can breath, which is why he has his arm up the whole time. So he breaths through his nose very "quietly".
For anyone wondering the guy holding black plastic bag is there to catch some of the water if they have to open the emergency drain because they were worried about water damage. Penn told them they’d only open it to save Teller’s life. And since his mask malfunctioned he was actually drowning for real...
I don't know for you guys but I clearly see Teller breathing. His belly and chest are repeatedly moving in a breathing fashion way but it is a cool trick overall
3 of Clubs ♣️
Gotta love some magic tricks.
2 mins. Alway hold my breath in school when board
🔥🔥🔥 legends
Yay I'm in the top 3.4 percentile. I finally have something to tell my parents so they'll be proud of me.
Forced card bit. Obviously the 3 of Clubs. Classic.
Weren’t they both in the “it’s Tricky” music video by Run DMC?
Yes
Damn Allison was HOT
@Hanafi Ariffin It's from the movies American pie, I don't remember which one. Alison played one of the characters. It's a pretty good comedy, worth a watch.
I dont want to know how he did the trick ,all i am worried is did he really hold his breath for all the time ?
@@karanparmar4754 tube in arm connected to his mask for oxygen
or he just hold his breath for 4 min (the world record in 11 min)
@@typhoontyph David Blaine held his breath for 17 mins on live TV lol
2:28 back then not so smooth at slight of hand! 😊
I saw them do this trick on the tv show filmed in England a few years back I never knew it was that old maybe older than this I mean this was the time parents wouldn't let their kids listen to Madonna lol
If anyone is wondering, teller is breading through a tube that goes up his sleeve and is never holding his breath or in any danger :)
Until the water starts getting into his mask and covers his nose :D
@@Astrobay13 yeah I thought that was the consensus lmao, you can even see the bubbles in his visor
This was such a simple trick. Teller is actually just a merman, duh.
Theres a pipe running up his right hand sleeve. Ahah!
What the hell just happened there. I admire these two for being such incredible professionalists who always push the limits little further. And this trick, actually going wrong at the end, is exactly what makes them the best. They are balancing on the thin line of human limits. I'm glad Teller is ok. Fascinating he still wanted to finish the trick and risked drowning.
Is this the guy from friends who tried to sell Joey encyclopedias?
Someta Sor yes!
damn I just set my personal best lol. made it 2 minutes 15 seconds before gasping for sweet sweet oxygen
At final, Teller seems like Sheldon Cooper 5:56
Teller used to sound like chris farley. They could have had a skit for that.
You mean Penn
I'm much more impressed with the switch blade.
