In this episode of Adventures with Purpose, we travel to Lake Cumberland, Kentucky, in search of a lost Robinson R22 Helicopter after it crashed in 2002 during the filming of a poker run.
NTSB Factual Report
On September 7, 2002, about 1230 eastern daylight time, a Robinson R-22B, N707RG, was substantially damaged after it impacted a lake and sank while maneuvering near Jamestown, Kentucky. The certificated commercial pilot and passenger were not injured.
Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan had been filed for the aerial photography flight conducted under 14 CFR Part 91.
According to a Federal Aviation Administration inspector, the helicopter was being utilized by a photographer to take pictures of boats during a race conducted on Lake Cumberland.
The pilot said the helicopter was about 200 feet above the lake, and he had been flying for more than an hour, when he spotted a boat that was not previously photographed.
The pilot made a left turn and began a decent to keep pace with the boat. He further stated:
"...I noticed an abnormal sink rate and put in aft cyclic. The rate did not arrest, so I brought in more aft cyclic along with collective power. As I came into about 50 to 100 feet agl, I heard a low RPM warning horn. I continued to slow the [helicopter], while rolling on throttle. The descent rate brought the [helicopter] in contact with the water."
The helicopter sank and came to rest at a depth of about 115 feet. It was not recovered.
The pilot reported approximately 1,437 hours of total rotorcraft flight experience, which included about 650 hours in make and model.
The helicopter was maintained under a manufacturer’s inspection program, and was inspected the day before the accident. It had been operated about 7 hours since the inspection. The helicopter was manufactured in 2001 and had accumulated about 505 hours since new.
NTSB Probable Cause
The pilot's failure to maintain the proper descent rate, which resulted in low rotor rpm and a collision with water.
While we did not recover the sunken helicopter this time, we are heading back in January with another search team and very hopeful that we will succeed this time in finding the helicopter and bringing it to the surface.

I like the neck tag a lot. When I take the dogs for a walk I hook the house keys on it. So easy to unclip the keys. Definitely a lot better than the way I had the keys before. I was going to wait to give the window poppers for Christmas presents but between now and Christmas is an awful long time so this weekend they're getting them.
Exactly the same for me too.
Popped up on my list, watched one video and was hooked.
They helped find my nephew Nick Allen. I will always be grateful to them for giving my family the closure we needed.
So very sorry for your loss.I watched when poor nick was found.thoughts are with you all and I agree they are wonderful people so they are.
I was surfing the channels and found AWP and Jared. Have watched everything of his I could find. So nice not to hear a curse word much less a steady stream of vulgarity as is on so many other shows. Thank you Jared and team.
I absolutely love this channel and what you guys do! I just love your professionalism and the love and respect you all show towards not only the families but each other! ❤❤
This channel is underrated, they should have way more subscribers for all the good things they do
Yep
Yeah but its a fallin world ...

Hi adventures with purpose. I work in south Louisiana in the oilfield. Unfortunately, helicopter crashes and shipping accidents happen. Im sure many families down here would love your expertise and compassion in any number of the accidents
Look at sam getting less camera shy! Awesome video and editing! You guys are a great team
I am a UH-60 crew chief in the Army National Guard and a helo crash scares the crap out of me. I am glad there were no injuries and I hope ya'll can return to recover the aircraft!
Thank you for your service. Stay safe.
Thank you for your service!
Thank You for serving our country. Be Safe.
Thank you for your service ! Air Force veteran here !
I was a flight nurse on a TwinStar (AS355) many years ago and attended way more memorials than I ever wanted to. Our programs last flight was my last flight. We lost an engine with four souls on board (pilot, patient, flight medic and I). We had to abort our landing and limp it to an emergency run-on landing at our small local airport. We were all VERY lucky that day that we got to go home to our families. Thank God we had two engines and a light crew that day. You couldn't pay me enough to even sit in an R22 much less spin it up and raise the skids. Mad respect to you and thanks for all you do!!
Love the way your channel has progressed! Don’t stop what y’all are doing.
When Dan's gap year is over and he heads off to college, what are y'all gonna do? His editing is phenomenal! Your trio has really become something special and I'm grateful to call you one of my favorite channels.

Love the little helicopter in the intro. Nice project, gang! Can't wait to see you finally pull that out 👍
We call running that zig zag pattern 'mowing the lawn'. It's tedious but you'll find more shipwrecks, or in this case helicopters that way. Good luck! Hope you come back to it.
Hello dude I'm a fan

There is a young man near my moms house were I grew up, he has gone missing since dec 12 2020, no one has seen him since, people like this give me hope the family will have some sort of peace one day,

I started watching him and his daughter finding stuff in the lakes
Dans getting pretty darn good at editing, music & transitions!
TO adventure with purpose. I work in aviation. I am around r22 choppers often. Can i offer you any help on info with lifting points etc any answers are a phone call away? . I know helicopter flight school mechanics and the schools use r22. Off the top of my head where the engine and trans mounts should be the strongest . the skids and rotor head too but that's my unofficial guess . if upside down use skids. I would NOT
Powerline cutters?
Yes this is for cutting powerlines. It is normality under the noz of the heli i don’t think its a good idea to put a powerline cutters on a r22 because of the power that is lift after that i am not a professional i am just a student flying rh44 🤷🏼♂️

I just found them and I love watching them
How about helping find Jacob Stover? The teen that went missing on the ohio river last Sunday. Kayaking. Very heartbreaking. Keep up the great work.
I want the Discovery Channel to do a series on you guys. Love you guys and what you do!!! Look forward to all your videos and the adventures you get up too. Shout out from South Africa.
No, no. Do not make a TV show. You will have to conform to the production company's way of doing things not to mention the pressure to solve whatever case you are on at the time. Also many of the shows of this caliber on TV today are scripted or at least partially. Can you imagine Jared being told what to say or act a certain way?
Thank you for sharing brother and I am enjoying this video with my pizza
I would love to donate. But my husband has lung cancer in both lungs, COPD, diabetes. I watch to take my mind off of things to keep my shelf from giving up on life. Thank you for keeping me going 💗

I love your videos, and the work you do is absolutely awesome!!!
I thought to myself, should I even post this, then figured what the heck.
For two very smart guys, what were you thinking throwing keys from one boat to another boat?
If you miss, all you can do is watch their reflections from the sunlight as they sink to the bottom of the lake, sorta like, yup, there they go.
I don’t think even professional baseball pitchers would do that. I applaud your guts just the same though lol
Keep up the Fantastic work!
Cheers 😬👍
Hey man. I remember a high mountain lake near cook city montana that had a helicopter go down. I think it went down in the 80's. I was a kid when i was there and heard the story. Rescue chopper went down. Maybe its still there. Long hike to get to that lake. Hit me up if you want help looking into it.
Love the tow music 🎶 @dan Dan the CAMERA man

I used to go to lake Cumberland, but I’ve since started going to laurel lake, I’ve heard about that helicopter crash but I’m to young to remeber it
Truly just happened upon the videos by accident and been hooked so bad keep running through data 😃😃... enjoy what they do for the families... That's Truly love and caring...
You are in my town Jamestown Ky.Hope y'all come back my family is a big fan of yours!
Not sure the best way to contact you so I’ll just try this. There is a missing persons case in Lancaster Country Pennsylvania. An Amish girl went missing with out a trace around a year ago. Some leads but wasn’t found. There are a bunch of ponds and some abandoned quarry’s in the area. I believe divers searched some of them but you guys seem to have amazing talent in this stuff. Not sure if you would be interested in this. A simple google search will get you all the info. Good luck on your adventures.
You'll find it!I have faith in you guys!. I'm always excited when something appears on the sonar! Love you guys. Be safe
BAM! I used to go there every year, we rented a house boat and partied our butts off. Great place, big lake I think it is 101 miles end to end. Watching from the Philippines 😎
😍🤗. 🙋🏼🇨🇦. Thanks Jared for sharing your sonar with us today we don't get this treat that often this is so appreciative thank you thank you and thank you❣❣❣❤️
What is a "hillacopter"?? LOL JK. Love the streams guys!!
Cases with missing anything on/in the water are SO hard. Initial estimates by 'witnesses' are So hard to get accurate. Good luck on this one guys. Much larger search area will have to be done without any more definitive info.
Bruh i love this channel just found it ✌🏽💀
I used to live on that lake in Jamestown. It is beyond DEEP and massive. There are so many drownings and so many missing people around there. But it is a beautiful place and the fishing is AMAZING. Don't get eaten by a monster Gar! 😂
My husband and his friend were there the day it crashed, witnessed it, and actually has video somewhere of the crash. (no cell phone video back then).
Me: sees 1 singular dislike on the video ಥ_ಥ
Also me: WE'VE BEEN INFILTRATED BY PEOPLE WITH THINGS TO HIDE (underwater) 🤔
They're afraid of your powers, Jared. Helicopter is too strong of a buff! 🚁
You guys should find a way to Aquire the vehicles you find and open a museum telling the stories of what happened in those cars. Museum of the missing
Omg yall are actually here i live right by the bent hill boat ramp i know exactly what you guys are talking about it was an espn helicopter filming a poker run it got hit by a roster tail from a passing boat and went down right in the mouth of beaver and otter creek
@@redlinemando Those copters fly just above the boats to get footage. if you watch many of these poker runs, they are 25-50' above the boats and it wouldn't take much to knock a 900lb heli out of the air.
@@redlinemando those r22's are shit, that's how...
@@redlinemando They are not talking about a rooster tail lure, a rooster tail as in water sprayed up in the air from the motor of the boat.
A little researching says otherwise It was some of loss of power engine and yes they were flying low but were not hit by a rooster tail from boat props... There was even a post from the photographer who survived thats where they found the only email and phone number
Great to see you guys
hi guys dont forget if you go back and find the crash site if there are any cameras sd cards in fact any thing you find that may have recorded events prior to the crash must be submitted to the FAA they take preference over everyone the owner the insurer the police the fire dept every one! and i think they usually like to be informed of a recovery of a downed aircraft as well so take that into consideration.
I really enjoy watcging you guys!! You both have great personalities and awesome smiles. Thank you for all you do to help others. Hugs from Texas
They found the helicopter, I have a funny personal story about it aswell. A couple of weeks ago, I was supposed to go and retrieve the last 2 items out of a storage unit in burnside for my grandmother. Opon arriving, I noticed the unit was locked. “No big deal” I thought, it was just a plastic barrel and a houseboat toilet. We come to find out, Alex Ashley, noticed the door on the unit was open, grabbed the stuff out of it, and locked it. (Thinking we wouldn’t come back for the items). Well he used the plastic barrel out of the unit to raise the helicopter from a depth of 100ft.
They definitely needed the barrel more than me!🤣
Hey. I love the way Dan edited the video. He did a great job. I need some pointers from him. I am glad that RUclips recommended you awhile ago. Thanks for the content.

I absolutely enjoy watching you guys as well as Chaos Divers , my sister was murdered in 2003 and her body and truck were placed in Pond River here in Madisonville Kentucky she was found three days after her disappearance on my 26th birthday
The helicopter is there, go back and find it!! How do they know the depth at which it wound up?? How far would something that light travel in the water descending from point of water impact to final underwater resting place??
Oh yes... I'm going back in January and I have Team Watters meeting up to help me out. We're getting it this time. You know me Dave... 😉
They know depth based on GPS crash location and fish finders. I could float downstream just a bit with little current in the Lake.
@@AdventuresWithPurpose Team Watters is the grandmaster of sonar. Let him find it then, you go get it!!
Yup, that’s the plan
@@AdventuresWithPurpose I can build you an ROV and pilot it for you. If it gets stuck you have to recover it for me though. Not sure how you post your videos but this was put up yesterday and you say you are going back in January?
