HL2 *and* Doom 3... I was out of the gamer loop a little bit back in the mid 2000's, went into some form of gamer shock in the store one afternoon when I seen HL2, Doom 3 *and* Deus Ex Invisible War *all* available for thee original Xbox, since my then PC wasn't up to the task of running the three of 'em; I bought all three titles for original Xbox...Nobody seen me for weeks :D
should have got Theif Deadly Shadows instead of Deus Ex Invisible War. I feel sorry for you. That out of the way, there were some really nice co-op/vs/multiplayer games on the xbox as well. Racing games abound, Need For Speed Undergrounds, Mid City Madness 3, Burnout, Project Gotham Racing, Forza Motor Sport, Dead or Alive 3, Street Fighter Anniversary Collection, Marvel vs Capcom 2, King of FIghter Neowave, Crimson Skies High Road to Revenge ( its actually a sequel to a PC game ).
+Gucio PL Yeah! Released just a week before the Xbox 360 was launched in November 2005! The first Xbox didn't receive either of the episodes, but in other news it did get Doom 3 in early 2005 and quite a few games in 2006 but just two games in 2007 and one last game in 2008.
***** They wanted to bring Doom 3 and HL2 to PS2/Xbox/GC but apparently the original Xbox being the most powerful and most PC like was the only one they were able to port successfully. The PS2 got Deus Ex and Unreal Tournament but they are much older. At least the PS3 got Doom 3 and the Orange Box.
Yes you're right but in some ways PS2 beated XBOX with a better artistic visual design in some games such Killzone(better than Halo), ResidentEvil4, DevilMayCry
Wow, I'm shocked that this was even a thing. I saw it on a website somewhere and thought it was a joke. I'm a huge Half-Life fan, and I never knew about this port.
The original Xbox was damn impressive. Half Life 2, DOOM 3, Halo CE, Halo 2, Morrowind and Ninja Gaiden were easily some of the best looking conole games of 6th era!
I remember playing this game when it was brand new back in 2004. I got it for Christmas and I remember munching on a chocolate orange and playing this game most of the morning. I bought a computer with my own money that year to run the 3 or 4 PC games that I had at the time :)
Dude I had no idea this came out this really shows a ton of power that the Xbox could handle. This is really cool. I think what really impresses me is the source physics.
The Xbox used a custom Nvidia Sound chip. I want to say that they had one as well for the PC but they really weren't known as sound card developers at the time. They called it something storm I believe. (google it). The big takeaway is that it had many channels for audio, ( like a sound card for PC ) and it could also do real Dolby Surround sound over Optical Cable out ( you had to own the Official Xbox HD Pack video out. Optical Port was not available on third party HD cables ). This game sounds good, and while I don't have a surround sound speaker system at the moment, I can imagine how good it would sound on a proper THX certified stereo system. -P.S The Nvidia soundchip is one of the reasons why the Original Xbox is almost impossible to emulate. The Bios and was never mapped out and the GPU was never actually identified ( people guess that its a Geforce 4 prototype )
I believe the difference is in the current build of the Source engine, Just like the HDR effect being blown out on the current HL2 the audio got a downgrade at some point too. Pretty sure the Vortigaunts changed also, I swear they were darker and more textured in the past instead of shiny and greenish grey, Combine pain sounds were removed too for some reason. The GoldSource engine got a downgrade on Steam too, Half Life and CS 1.6 don't even have Direct X or EAX these days unfortunately...
The Deadly Gamers It is blown out I tested it a while back, the current Steam version suffers overexposure, you can see it when you look at the Combine screens on the current version and you can barely see the details on the screen where you could in the old version. The soldiers used to have pain sounds when you hit them and when they died but now it's just when they die (some sort of retcon due to them being augmented) I really miss the old Vortigaunts, not a fan of the EP2 ones
joshua powell it depends if you can put up with 30fps or lower especially if your used to cod etc runnung at 60fps... half life 2 on xbox probly looks crappy now
A source engine gsme on the original Xbox is impressive. I had this but was enever allowed to play it(im only 13 now) but then we got it on Xbox 360, watched my dad play theough it, then i went theough it and the episodes and now ive just finished main hl2 for the 3rd time today :)
The Coppermine P3 was actually quite a good CPU and in many ways comparable to faster clocked first gen Pentium 4s. Dual Socket P3 systems can even boot and run Crysis (at slow speed but do it never the less). Alas, at only 733 MHz, the P3 in the Xbox was not clocked high enough to deal with a game so forward looking at the time. When it was released, HL2 really was the most complete game world ever made, when considering it's great physics with a poop ton of objects, lots of animation and ragdoll physics for NPCs, good AI, and an expansive world. It had to fit within only 64 MB for the Xbox while having some of what made that world so great pared down to even be capable of running on the system. It still looks relatively good though. The Xbox really wasn't built for HL2.
NVIDIA soundstorm audio processor. I assume not a lot of computers had crazy sound processing like the xbox did. Not a lot of people used sound cards back then either and still don't. EAX was great when it was used. made games like FEAR sound great.
+Marvin Perez I've heard that Sound Storm is nearly impossible to emulate, is this true? I know that an original xbox is really hard to emulate as a rule. I really want to get a modded xbox with a flash card or hard drive so that I can play my xbox games forever. After that, someone will need to make a HDMI modification. THAT would be worth it.
P.S I still own a Creative Card just in case I want to play an EAX only game. ;) The Witcher Enhanced Edition sounds amazing in Surround Speakers with EAX on. The same with Thief Deadly Shadows and Doom 3.
But even if they program this game with the Emotion Engine of the PS2, it still couldn't run it as smooth as xbox and they would have to get rid of things like bump mapping, normal mapping, specular lighting, shadows, some particles and we would have low resolution textures.
NERDSMASHER5000 No the Xbox was more powerful than the Gamecube in every way that counted. The Gamecube did have some good technology though like how fast the access time on the RAM was. Anandtech broke down all three platforms and gave a pretty good reaction to all of them.
LOL, I love how Halo 2 was one of the only console games that could rival HL2 graphically, and then HL2 became the best looking console game at the time.
My original still works, got it christmas 2001, it only has problems reading games and has a LOT of hitches..but i'm trying to come up with ways to fix it. First internal dusting last year and it started working a little better again..
Resolution and Frame rate took a major hit for this port. It runs but is not hitting 30 fps. Some of the Textures are really low. Still nice to see it some what work.
The resolution and the textures are locked to low and it's locked to DX8,because XBOX couldn't handle Half-Life 2,but it can handle thanks to the useless DX7 support that Half-Life 2 have.
Fort Gamer Original Xbox did not had DX9, 480p resolution was standard for consoles at the time and only like 8 games of that era ventured beyond 480p (1080i in case of PS2, 720p in case of Original Xbox)
Fort Gamer No, 1080i is interlanced and 720p is progressive, the actual amount of pixels per frame is around the same for both 1080i and 720p, again only like 10 games supported it.
+G̶A̶B̶R̶I̶E̶L̶ L̶O̶U̶P̶ (Bʟᴜᴇ Aʟᴘʜᴀ Wᴏʟғ) Not really, the original Xbox, like the uploader mentions, effectively had a Pentium 3, thats a single core chip. The 360 used a 3 core chip from IBM with some equivalent to hyperthreading. Plus the 360 had more memory, a more powerful GPU, ect ect. Also one of the big reasons the original Xbox got more PC ports was because it already had an x86 CPU and ran DirectX so porting was pretty easy, you just had to scale up the UI and maybe tone down the graphics. I mean, just look at the best looking games on the 360 vs the original Xbox, Half Life 2 is one of the OG xbox's best looking games, whereas the 360 later in life had games like GTA V and Crysis 2.
Dec The Xbox series of consoles really are super powerful even well after its time. I can't believe they were able to get GTA V to look super good on Xbox 360 (looks like shit on PS3 though). And it's all thanks to PC technology and DirectX
Yes, it's completely normal. The Xbox is quite weak and it's actual amazing to see Half-Life 2 running on it.

I was comparing the Xbox to 2005 PC's. You have to think too that HL2 was made for the PC and at that time, you needed a pretty good PC to run it. Now look at this, it's running on the Xbox and compare this console to 2005 PC's - it's quite amazing to see it even running.
HL1 could be fit in an N64 cartridge with some reduced graphics/ physics, they didn't do it because surce engine has always been a piece of hardware power glutton
For me it almost looks like the PC version, but with lower resolution. Graphics aren't all either, but if they ported it to PS2, it wouldn't have anti-aliasting, and they would have to get rid of all kinds of effects and it would almost look like Half Life 1.
hey I use xmbc on my xbox as well..but how do you get it to launch games with an icon like that? What I do is transfer the extracted files via ftp and launch from the default.xbe file
Hey how do you add so many games to your old xbox? I got one gathering dust 10 years now, thinking of reviving it if you can point me in the right direction.
I did the same. The first thing you would need is to decide if you want to hard mod or soft mod. Then the rest is just googling "how to [soft/hard] mod Xbox" . Also there are wireless Xbox controllers now ( I don't know if they had them back then or not).
Between HL2, Doom 3, Chronicles Of Riddick, Halo 2, Stranger's Wrath, Far Cry Instincts, getting gameplay (although limited) that, at the time, costs around $500-$800 to play on P.C. on a $129 system in 2004/2005 was phenomenal! And to top it all off, GTA 3/Vice City/San Andreas and MGS2 (PS2 "exclusives") with better graphics and performance, made PS2 absolutely obsolete to me...
Yeah, but it still didn't get MGS3. Didn't the original Substance version of MGS2 for Xbox have some issues anyway? I'd prefer PS2 mainly for titles like Resident Evil 4, Ratchet and Clank, God of War, Final Fantasy 12, etc. I couldn't really think of many exclusive games for Xbox besides Halo that would really have gotten me to consider the alternative. Same with Xbox One now. I got myself to buy it mainly for Master Chief Collection. Meanwhile PS4 is getting all of the other cool games. At least Xbox One still has Forza.
For me the current gen is a bit of a toss-up, because I prefer the 3rd party games over the exclusives (Witcher, Fallout, Elder Scrolls, GTA, Battlefield, Red Dead, etc.). What sways me towards the X1X is what it can do with those 3rd party games, not necessarily Halo, Crackdown, Forza, Cuphead, etc.
Apparently they wanted to put Doom 3 and HL2 on PS2 as well as the first Xbox, but they couldn't. Now with the PS4 we're getting to the point where it's so similar to PC that we can shift around games very easily. Though of course the PS3 did Doom 3 and HL2.
I'm impressed they got HL2 and Doom3 to run on the xbox. Quite the accomplishment, they both look great too. Not nearly as bad as the end of this gen PC compared to 360/ps3.
Calling it "weak" is a bit unfair... Isn't it the most powerful of the six gen consoles? It's weak in comparison to the 7th gen consoles, but the Xbox chewed up the Gamecube and PS2 stat wise, didn't it? Plus, this is NOTHING compared to Conker: Live & Reloaded. THAT blew me away. It's on par with some modern titles I've seen, and it's for the original Xbox!
Good point, either way, I still agree that this is farily impressive for the original Xbox, but Conker: Live & Reloaded blows it away visual wise. This is still a very impressive port. Kind of a shame that Half-Life 1 wasn't released for the Xbox, since you could have had both games on the same console.
Well I should hope so, considering the XBOX came out almost two years later than the PS2. My crappy PC that could barely play anything well at the time still blew it out of the water.
It actually looks pretty decent, it wouldn't be a stretch to say that (despite the resolution it runs at) it's in the same ballpark of the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions.
Oh god, please don't. That couldn't be further from wrong. It did utilize slightly modified off-the-shelf PC parts but that does not mean that you could simply boot it into Windows, nor was it a modification of Windows 2000 (or it's associated NT architecture). It may have been used DirectX and it is certainly more similar to a PC than most consoles, but it is not a Windows machine with a skin pack.
I believe they wanted to port Half-life 2 and Doom 3 to PS2/GC/Xbox, but only the first Xbox could really handle them I guess. HL2 and Doom 3 moved onto the PS3/360 also. I feel like these games are primarily PC games anyways.
I'm still not sure, even with the game's size itself, Id say it's too big for an n64 cartridge, also hl1 doesn't run on source, it runs on goldsource which is just a heavily modified quake engine.
I actually prefer how Dr.Breen's speeches echo on the XBOX. Makes the place feel kinda empty and it also make it feel as if he is actually talking through a screen and not like in the building. Also, I like how his screen kinda glitches every now and then. Same goes with Kleiner and anyone else on screens, it's done much better here than on PC
No it was not. Less ram and weaker cpu. Dreamcast hardware was based on naomi arcade hardware. Naomi 2 was a little bit more powerfull than ps2. First xbox ofcourse was a monster.
Haha hell yeah, i love perfect dark. But well, who knows dude, the only way to know is watching the real thing, and if someone went around the project of porting half life to the n64 it would be pretty cool, I love that kind of stuff.
Even if graphics were compressed and you removed voices, AI and Physics are still pretty heavy, I mean, it would probably run at around the same framerate as the heavy segments in perfect dark.
This really pushed the original XBOX to its limits... great use of the hardware.

The Gamecube had a pretty beefy GPU, too. Trouble is it lacked RAM and there was no way its CPU could handle Half-Life 2's physics.
of course it does because the original xbox was released at a time where a game like half life 2 was unthinkable to run on it.

Does the xbox version's sounds sound more realistic, or is that just me?
The sounds are better on XBOX,but overall, the PC version is the best one.
Xbox sound isn't better, it's compressed, but it has an echo effect in some scenes.
Oh wait, can't forget Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden though. Those games pretty much made the Xbox for me.
That's a lie, Xbox was playing HL2 on low settings at 480p & well below 30fps, a very cheap PC could do that in 2004.
Apparently they wanted to put Doom 3 and HL2 on PS2 as well as the first Xbox, but they couldn't.
Now with the PS4 we're getting to the point where it's so similar to PC that we can shift around games very easily. Though of course the PS3 did Doom 3 and HL2.
did anyone else saw that fire animation?
I've ps2! :(
But I can play Resident evil 4 and God of War!
But I can't play Halo, Half-Life 2, Doom 3, etc.
The mighty 2001 warrior strikes!
I'm impressed they got HL2 and Doom3 to run on the xbox. Quite the accomplishment, they both look great too. Not nearly as bad as the end of this gen PC compared to 360/ps3.
Hijynx87 This gen isn't too bad. Most AAA games are still coming out for them. Its the next gen's ending I'm worried about now.
Something PS2 was never capable of doing...
barney
what happened to your overwatch suit
it looks pixelated
fun fact, half 1 was actually ported to the dreamcast
Calling it "weak" is a bit unfair...
Isn't it the most powerful of the six gen consoles? It's weak in comparison to the 7th gen consoles, but the Xbox chewed up the Gamecube and PS2 stat wise, didn't it?
Plus, this is NOTHING compared to Conker: Live & Reloaded. THAT blew me away. It's on par with some modern titles I've seen, and it's for the original Xbox!
Not to mention the load times.
Good point, either way, I still agree that this is farily impressive for the original Xbox, but Conker: Live & Reloaded blows it away visual wise. This is still a very impressive port.
Kind of a shame that Half-Life 1 wasn't released for the Xbox, since you could have had both games on the same console.
where's that gamecube 2 port you promised valve???
yeah but dont forget the dream cast was like 2 years before.
Well I should hope so, considering the XBOX came out almost two years later than the PS2. My crappy PC that could barely play anything well at the time still blew it out of the water.
It actually looks pretty decent, it wouldn't be a stretch to say that (despite the resolution it runs at) it's in the same ballpark of the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions.
that loading faster than my core2duo
Source is, at it's heart, a very heavily modified quake 1 engine. So, there you go.
I'm a PS and SEGA fan but...I admid...I really impress O_o
thats because Xbox was mainly just a PC using Windows NT so it was easy to mod/hack
The audio is amazing????

+1
I have autism........

RUclips meets ignorant comments - once again.
What?
I like how he throws the TV out the window.
at 8:38. 😂
I believe they wanted to port Half-life 2 and Doom 3 to PS2/GC/Xbox, but only the first Xbox could really handle them I guess.
HL2 and Doom 3 moved onto the PS3/360 also. I feel like these games are primarily PC games anyways.
the graphics look too good for a console made from 2001
Neeeh, It's like 4 or 5 times better, also Orange Box is slow because it's running @ 1080p (I suppose) while this runs at 480p
Yes, through Xbox Linux, which is totally different.
And im impressioned to see a console 2001 to run this game xbox best
Impressive port but I’m not sure why you would choose this version now.
HALF LIFE 2 WAS ON CONSOLES! How did I not know about this when I still had a PS2!?
It wasn't on PS2.
***** Not relevant.
+EmeraldInferno
HL2 is on the original Xbox, but the PS3 and 360 got HL2 and it's episodes and Portal 1/2 and TF2.
God the load times
Its out of limits for xbox original 2001 to run half life 2
Was amazing H- L 2 running on Xbox, it sucked but amazing... 15 fps for the win! My first playthrough, but then got the 360 version of orange box.
I'm still not sure, even with the game's size itself, Id say it's too big for an n64 cartridge, also hl1 doesn't run on source, it runs on goldsource which is just a heavily modified quake engine.
very cool
как все таки олдсульна выглядит, халва, аж прослезился :3
So many Loads, but that looks like on 360 WTF !?
guys i have this game with even the plastic around the box how much does it cost
Nice footage. Brings back memories...
BUT FOR FUCK'S SAKE HOLD THE FUCK STILL.
I didnt think half life 2 ever looked that impressive. I thought that doom 3 being ported to the original Xbox was vastly more impressive.
Half Life 2 was certainly doing a lot more behind the scenes.
yea doom 3 actually ran smoothly
Half life 2 is super impressive
And yet doom 3 still looked better than hl2
Clesarie doom 3 looked like plastic
Looks like the graphics from now a days
woah what was up with your original xbox? was it some sort of mod?
it looks like a good mod to the original half life
I actually prefer how Dr.Breen's speeches echo on the XBOX. Makes the place feel kinda empty and it also make it feel as if he is actually talking through a screen and not like in the building. Also, I like how his screen kinda glitches every now and then. Same goes with Kleiner and anyone else on screens, it's done much better here than on PC
How did this even run on the XBOX? WHY? And how does it sound better?
on the original xbox? there was a loading screen between the gman speech and between you riding on the train. that wasn't; in the pc version.
Yeah, I thought that was interesting. I guess the intro had to be a separate map file in order for the Xbox to handle it.
IPlayGames this must be the original 2004 version then?
Phalanx Phalanx Yeah. I think it is. There is no way the original xbox would be able to handle the current version of the game on PC.
Chris sims That was actually a FMV as far as I know.
bit late to the party but the whole game is actually cut into smaller maps because of the xbox's limited ram
What about a Dreamcast port? It's graphics will still be shit but at least the framerate and voices could be kept intact
