  • My experience of taking Ritalin Adult (methylphenidat) for the first time since my ADHD diagnosis. It gave me an incredible focus but also had its downsides. More updates on my medication learnings soon. Where are you right now in your ADHD journey?

@@wasabi333 it seems perhaps by your approach that you might be the entitled one. Doesnt reallt matter tho, you have ben prescribed vyvanse which is a great option to try, i know quite a few who has had success with it. Myself included, for a while. Its true what she says, you need patience, maybe even some persistence if you ought to make this work.

Before Ritalin, that only came after my ADHD diagnosis, I couldn't focus on anything at all, literally anything. I was basically disabled, unproductive, I couldn't finish a single task, there is no way to explain how my life was before, it goes way beyond that. After Ritalin I could talk an entire sentence without getting overwhelmed by my thoughts. I could think "I need to shower" and take a shower. Do the dishes. Write a text. Do things. Actually do things, and finish them. Finishing things.
I got my diagnosis in 2021 at 39 years old. Before, I was unemployed for most of my life. Now I have a job, I'm finishing University, it's like having a second chance to live. I could go on and on, to explain how much my entire life has improved and I'm only beginning to live my life now, at 40 years old.
It's sad to look back and see an entire life wasted away, but I'm glad I'm in a better place now. I'm also autistic, diagnosed at the same time, but the ADHD diagnosis was the one that really changed my life.

I’m with you. I’m 38 and about to receive my diagnosis. It’s been an absolute eye opener. To know that there is a neurological reason for the struggles that I’ve had and blamed myself for all my life. It’s changed everything. I am so hopeful that this medication will do what SRIs failed to do. Here’s to being the lucky ones to finally be diagnosed and life finally beginning ❤️

@@SceneandCrime I've takennantidepres for years with no success because my depression was never chemical. It was existential, because I felt useless for being unemployed and unproductive, and felt like a burden for my parents. Since I began my treatment I don't even know what depression is anymore. I get sad sometimes, but it has nothing to do with the overwhelming feeling of impotence I had for my life.
I hope you can improve your life with the diagnosis and proper treatment. It will get a lot better.

I was hit with similar feelings.
I got diagnosed in January ("ADD", so inattentive ADHD) and had decided to take my first pill on a day with no plans, cause I was nervous about how I'd react.
I just sat there on the couch waiting, after 30 min I felt the calm in my body and my brain.
It was like I could "take in the room" - I noticed details but it wasn't the bouncing from one impression to the next. I could sort of dwell on it a bit.
I was still nervous thinking "Is this just placebo? Am I faking it? Has it even had time to kick in yet?" and continued to sit for another 30 min.
And then I started crying.. For many reasons but most of all it was a relief.
    The calm was a relief.
The focus and dwelling on details.
The confirmation that my diagnosis was right. That my experience was real.
The sadness or grief of all years of help I've missed. All the times I've been mean towards myself for being "lazy".
And then I thought "No wonder I'm so mentally exhausted and tired all the time". All that energy spend in my brain bouncing around.
We're slowly trying to find the right dose for me. At first I didn't find a big change in "motivation" or "organizing" tasks. So far fairly limited side effects like headache and lower appetite.
But my partner notices when the meds stops working in the evening. He sees how I am getting easily distracted again, talking faster or incoherent speech/sentences and more "hyper".
Especially when cooking dinner is about when it wears off. Cooking with that scattered brain makes it very obvious lol
It was especially tough at first when I was only on a morning pill and had to take the train home from university as the effect was gone.
So overwhelming to go from calm to a no-meds, restless brain and get a bunch of stimuli and impressions. I just went into a shut down, looking down at the floor and was grateful for my earplugs.

I too cried, as I am 51, and had the chance to do this many times, once when it wan up to my parents, and they chose not to medicate me at 7, in 1978. If this is this same meds, I know I missed a different life, and cannot help but wonder how much easier it could have been.

Nah that's illusion, like all amphetamines u would need to increase dosage over time, no eating, no sleeping, and ur brain and body would melt in some point. It's also illusion that "normal' ppl have focus like that u have on Ritalin, essentially speed.. Its like supercharge in cars, its great for short run, but destroys ur motor far more faster. Sure it was good for blitz krieg (Pervitin) but we all know end results...also always remember Htilers hands at the end of war...he was on speed too...

Cool vid! Just one detail that might be of interest to others who take ADHD medication:
Ritalin is a re-uptake inhibitor (not amphetamine). It does not increase the dopamine production, rather it reduces how much dopamine is returned while transported between neurons (in the synapse). Dopamine is sent back and forth, but more in one direction, eventually out to the rest of the brain.
Amphetamines on the other hand, increase the fundamental dopamine production, while the re-uptake is not altered.
Re-uptake inhibitors is an ingenious chemical alteration in the brain, that seems to not burn-out neurons, and be safer than amphetamines.

1:40/2:05 and 4:41were deep for me. Suddenly being able to do the bike task (and taxes, etc.) because of the meds is such a good illustration of how real and life-alteringly HARD having ADHD is. I can do whatever I put my mind to and I can also process whatever I want and it’s much easier to plan, execute and contemplate. I don’t feel any emotional stunting either, just greater control over them meaning that I still feel a great range of emotions like most adhd people, but I can control and process them much much easier now. Great video! On your last point regarding how things would have been different starting meds at a younger age, imagine you're 55 and discovering this. I stumbled across a video 3 years ago and this guy explaining how he wasted away every morning doing nothing constructive, just avoiding tasks. That was me and I decided to give the meds a try. I always knew I was ADHD somewhat but I didn't realize how much it effected me. I was prescribed Vyvance. Vyvance is slower reacting and lasts about 12 hours although it wanes after 8 hrs or so. There isn't much of a "crash" and works the same. It's a great medication. It's a problem if taken late as you can't turn it off. Sometimes I find I do not want the "help" for 12 hours. I'm pretty sure they both have the same affect. The biggest issue is that over time it works less and less, you have to take more and more. I do my best to not take it for 3 or 4 months of the year, when I need it the least and it works much better starting up again and I can keep the dosage the same and it works better. Thanks to you're video I will ask my doc if he can prescribe me both meds. That way if I want to get stuff done say in the evening I know I will sleep well after 4 hours.
I experienced the same effects as you and the first summer I took it I got more done than I had gotten done in years, and its not because I didn't have things to do. Like many ADHD people I have 1000 things to do. The most memorable thing when I first started was I remember actually thinking and concentrating about walking up the stairs. I never ever did that. I would be thinking of 10 other things. I noticed I didn't stumble anymore and I wasn't banging into stuff etc. because when I moved around I thought about moving around. Not sure if that makes sense.
If someone was to ask me how to describe the feelings, I would say it enhances all emotions. Whatever you like you like more, whatever you hate you hate more. Naturally if you like things that are bad for you....probably not a good thing. I get easily frustrated when things begin to fail and I get terribly mad when things fail on the meds. It was better at the beginning when it worked better. I will be looking forward to you're next video. Cheers.

I would laugh at the dentist telling me you better get that fixed or your going to need a root canal. Ya right. Give me a bit of pain first....then I will consider it an emergency. 0:57 Ritalin is not an amphetamine, it is methylphenidate. The prototypical explanation to distinguish the two is that amphetamine releases dopamine and inhibits its reuptake, whereas methylphenidate only inhibits reuptake. It gets much more nuanced when you look further into it though.
Clinically, amphetamine increases dopamine levels much more potently than methylphenidate but the two can be titrated to produce similar behavioural effects at lower doses.

So funny, finally at the age of 43 gotten diagnosed and now I have taken the first dose MPH ever in my life... I had the complete opposite effect. I didnt felt more activated or stimulated. In contrary, I felt like someone had glued my feet to the ground and instead of bouncing around and being fast in my brain i felt like I have to learn to walk again in my life. On the positive side though was... I was able to focus on some worktask the first time in my life. Really focusing, even with someone interrupting me... finding back to it in an instant again afterwards... No interruptions, no distraction... no background noises where to loud. They still existed but werent like... an actual thing my brian constantly on a sidetrack was busy with noticing.

I was prescribed 110mg per day of Ritalin for about 5 years, I'd take 2 x 10mg tabs every hour and a half all day everyday, and I'd also drink 3 or 4 coffees a day as well as 3 or 4 big cans of energy drinks. The problem for me with Ritalin is the very short half life, 2 hours after taking a dose I'm feeling all come down and strung out pretty much hanging out for more ritalin. After 5 years on them I realised I was no better off than I was in the years prior to being prescribed ritalin when I was a meth addict self medicating my ADD, so I weaned myself off the ritalin and went through a nasty anxiety filled withdrawal similar to meth withdrawals, I now live a clean drug and meds free life and deal with my ADD and anxiety using exercise, diet, and lifestyle.

    • @ats-3693
      @ats-3693 7 месяцев назад

@@dustinn6075 Yes I think so, ADD/ADHD like anxiety, PTSD, OCD etc are thinking disorders there isn't actually anything wrong with you, we can learn how to rectify thinking disorders without medication, psych medications don't rectify anything they just chemically mask the disorder temporarily. Cognitive behavioural therapy and learning mindfulness and self love and care through meditation are amazing tools that actually get to the root of thinking disorders and fix them permanently by changing and making new healthy neural pathways in our brains through the process of neuroplasticity. But in saying all this sometimes some light medication is really helpful to give you the headspace to get some real help, a person with bad adhd and anxiety (which often go hand in hand) can find it difficult to connect with the people they need to get help, some medication definitely helps you get started.

HELLO!!! So hey I didnt realize I had ADHD at all in my life like ever until I attended college. I knew I was a little crazy in high school and had a few phases of deep depression but also had anxiety was super emotionally intelligent and craved DEEP connections with other people. I attended uni and noticed I needed to move like a motor and the long hours of homework made me feel exhausted and depresses like my first and second semesters. I noticed my homework took a lot longer compared to my classmates, university is nothing like high school I took easy classes in high school only 2 AP classes, the rest regular classes (USA school system). Anyways, I also really got into art in college because I am class of 2020 high school and did a ton of art to cope during quarantine and noticed I talked a lot more than other people around me. I am a psychology, philosophy, modern day hippie listening to indie/alt rock kind of gal. I am also at university majoring in not the easiest major, construction management. I have had other phases of depression. My sister thought I was autistic lol because I endlessly talk, need a long like 1 hour jog daily to get my energy out, have a ton of emotions, love art, and I am super quirky like I love weird raw squid to eat. That made my sensitive self so sad that she thought that but then I thought, hey maybe I am different. Which I have always been a unique character but I'm like hey I support neurodivergency and I could be one. I started researching neurodivergeny and came across adhd, I talked about it with my therapist who her husband has ADHD and shes like you totally have ADHD. I said I really agree with a lot of these symptoms. I then went to another therapist who talked with me and gave me help and support for what I needed at the time but he said his cousin also had ADHD and he said I totally had ADHD but he's like your creativity, curiosity, intelligence socially academic and emotionally will make you through your life it'll be great (I was still depressed during this time lol) Then I visited a Sacramento California psychiatrist and tried bringing up adhd, he recommended zoloft for my depression/anxiety which is what the other psychiatrists and therapists recommended but he used super old outdated information and he was an old guy, we wasted $2000. Then my mom was like you don't have ADHD because that man has been to school (he has a 5 star rating on his website for whatever reason) plus my mom doesn't know what adhd is she just makes fun of it and doesn't really try to understand or learn about it herself and she doesn't understand mental health at all she is not very in touch with herself (she is, but not like me). So then FINALLY I attend university and I go to the counseling center and they of course recommend zoloft and concerta. I start with 50 mg of zoloft daily and it super helps but Its still not perfect I then take 100 mg of zoloft daily and its fantastic $1-$5 for a month supply and I literally have no depression and anxiety, no ANTS, no intrusive thoughts, no suicidal/self harming thoughts, no low mood, no anxiety so bad like I get frantic walking into the room or have to escape. My mind is a LOT CALMER and I am so much naturally happier and less stressed, then they put me on concerta. CONCERTA 18 MG A DAY HAS CHANGED MY LIFE. My grades in school got so much better overnight, I am so much more motivated, I can sit down an read a book without fidgeting and squirming so much, I have the motivation to listen to audio books and podcasts which I tried to do before but it was exhausting and I would miss 1/3rd of the info so I would just put on music, I don't have to run 5-7 miles a day to get my energy out, I finish my homework a lot faster, I lose things less, I am less impulsive with eating and spending habits, I am on time to things, I am not as distracted. ANYWAYS I as a women did not get treated or the proper help and medication I needed until 21 years old. I am so glad I have been on this crazy incredible journey because I will probably be on zoloft and concerta the rest of my life. My brain lacks seratonin, well has less than usual because before zoloft I tried therapy, diet and exercise I would try EVERYTHING and I was still struggling with depression so antidepressants have been a truly positive experience for me, I know that they arent for everyone, but they certainly worked in my experience. I did not realize I have adhd until college though, especially because growing up I would be in a lot of sports and have huge mood swings but I got great grades in school. I didn't realize how much I needed more like a motor than everyone else until university because I do have the combined type but I have more of the hyperactive, I have energy for days and I can run off of very little sleep. Anyways, I am a character and that's all what I wanted to say. I loved this video the medication kicks in and you want to learn and do everything. I am so happy because the medication gives me the opportunity to focus and learn about everything that I want to learn about.

A general practitioner should be skilled enough to safely prescribe ADHD medications like Medikinet (methylphenidate or MPH). Dosing of ADHD medication is different for everyone. There is no dose-response consistency across individuals. For example, your age and weight have no bearing on what dose will be effective for you. If you're not feeling any benefit at 5mg Medikinet, your doctor should gradually increase your dose a little at a time until you feel it is working. Your doctor may even prescribe you more than the posted maximum daily dose. Some people can tolerate a very high amount of MPH and it's not well understood why this is the case. Regardless, follow your doctor's advice closely and do not experiment with dosing outside of their advice. Stimulants have a narrow band of effectiveness in most people; going above that band can cause significant negative effects.

However because I started the diagnosis process when I was in Australia before I moved to Germany, and was lucky enough to be in Australia visiting at the exact time a diagnosis appointment came up, I was initially prescribed Elvanse since it is the preferred drug in Australia for adult ADHD. Getting it here in Germany was very difficult though and my psychiatrist was only willing to help me do the dosage adjustment after an hour and a half consultation where we discussed everything about my life, mood, and mental status. and is it safe to want a medication that lasts all day long like 6 to 8 hours long?

Hey, answering your question. I took Ritalin for 2 months and I can tell that the medication last for me for around 10 hours so you need to take in the morning. If you take too late is hard to fall asleep and gave me anxiety and also overthinking a lot. I am starting my first dose of Vyvanse today and so far I feel okay. I didn’t like when the ritalin kicked in

Methylphenidate in the immediate release form lasts between 2-4 hours. You can take it at 5pm and still get to sleep just fine. Before the long acting meds were developed, kids would take Ritalin several times a day.
Long acting formulations like Concerta (OROS MPH) can last much longer. These long lasting formulations are preferable because you don’t have to take a new pill every few hours. But some people prefer the immediate release version. Immediate release can also be used off label in combination with a long acting MPH to fill in the gaps or extend symptom control, but do this under a doctor’s guidance only.

You sound like you have a German accent (or anything from a country close to it) - if you ARE German, could you explain the way to go about getting a diagnosis? I'm so confused, do I contact my Hausarzt, what do I tell them to believe me that I actually need help and am not imagining it, do I go to a therapist, psychiatrist directly...?

Hi all. I'm 36. Just started Concerta 36mg yesterday. Let me share my experience with you. First of all beceause of the research I made earlier actually my expectations were already very high. I was waiting for like a magical touch. After the first 1,5 hours, I wasn't like "I know kung fu" from matrix. But slowly I started to hear less sounds, less thoughts, probably after 2 or 2,5 hours I started to work, and with hours my focus rised up every hour. Plus yesterday I was awake with just with 5 hours sleep. So normally I would sleep in day time for 2 hours easilly. Also I would have slept at around 9:00 at night. I wouldn't keep my eyes open. But yesterday with concerta hours later I felt awake like never before. I mean normally even if I slept 10 hours 12 hours per day I would still feel sleepy.
So long story short it was a really difference for me. I haven't feel awake like this for years. I was like always but always sleepy no matter how many hours that I sleep. Even I had tried the med called modiwake before but it didn't help even tiny bit for me. And I already have too much cafaine resistance for years of consuming. So drinking 6-7 caffees per day was not effecting much.
And also cuz of my sportive background I used to have breadycardy which is low heart rates. Like around 55-60. And I'm a smoker. If I quit smoking it goes below 50 . With this concerta my day avarage was around 80. It was nice. I had more energy. I mean it's hard to feel energitic with 50 beat rates.
By the way in my country unfortunately only ritalin (short term) and concerta (long term) are available. Adderal has been banned yeas ago cuz of the chemical considered narc like drug. But probably concerta will be good enough.

@@BattlefieldADHD Hi there, I’m curious 🧐 about adult adhd. What Adhd version do you have? I know for me personally I’m very talkative and so I expend my energy a lot through social interactions, so I can definitely say I’m energetic in the social sense which also gets me to move physically too. What does a typical day look like for you with adhd? What are your symptoms that stand out and that stood out that lead you to receiving your diagnosis? I would like for you to load up another video on you explaining your adhd traits in your day to day life, it would be fun to watch.

I'm not a doctor, but I have a science education and much experience with ADHD personally. There is no "best" medication for ADHD. Amphetamine-based medications like Adderall work better for some people; methylphenidate medications like Ritalin and Concerta work best for others. Some people do better with non-stimulant medications like Strattera and Intuniv. Your situation will be as unique as your brain and there is no value in asking others which medication works best, because we are all unique.
