What a lovely break-in! I think that's the first time I've ever seen a UR to start a grid. Have you ever wondered how many UR opportunities could be squeezed into a classic Sudoku? I used two in this one, although the second was superfluous (95 = row 9 column 5): 95 (hidden UR, boxes 2 and 8), 65, 76, 74, 36, 34, 68, 27, 97, 69, 49, 57, 44, 45, 14, 16, 15, 46, 55, 42, 83, 18, 79, 41, 54, 66 (hidden UR, boxes 5 and 8; alternative is hidden quadruple and single in box 9), 64, 56, 61, 53, 94, 96, 38, 13, 93, 23, 39, 71, 98, 92, 21, 17, 89, 28, 87, 88, 78, 72, 31, 29, 32, 22, 12, 81, 82.
Coming back to this a year later, I found a different break-in using the same UR (76 = row 7 column 6): 76 (hidden UR, boxes 2 and 8, producing hidden triple in box 8): 76, 74, 36, 34, 95, 65, 55, 42, 62, 27, 83, 97 (restriction in boxes 2 and 3), 57 (naked single), 44, 45, 14, 16, 15, 46, 41, 49, 69, 54, 56 (hidden UR, boxes 5 and 8), 61, 53, 66, 64, 96, 94, 13, 38, 82, 93, 23, 39, 71, 98, 92, 21, 22, 81, 78, 79, 18, 12, 28, 87, 17, 89, 88, 29, 32, 31, 72. If the 8 in box 6 is replaced with a 9, the result is a surprisingly elaborate Medium-rated puzzle, but one that is just as susceptible to a uniqueness shortcut.
Not sure I would have gotten this, at least not quickly if you hadn't tipped me off with the taboo strategy. Knowing to be on the lookout for it made it a very approachable puzzle.
Fun puzzle. Of course, the moment I saw the 89 pair in block 8 leaving a 27 in r9c5, that was it: the 2 needed to be there in order to escape the UR conflict. Nicely built puzzle, the solution of which seems to depend entirely on this principle of uniqueness. However, before applying this easy solution, I pondered about the placement of the 1s in row 5. Was it possible to find a logical solution that those 1s had to be either in block 4 or 6, or rather, were they eliminated from both these positions in favour of the central cell r5c5. After looking at it from all sorts of angles, I was unable to make a compelling conclusion, but I did bet in favour of r5c5. If someone solved the puzzle from that angle, I'd like to know. Thanks for sharing.
Strange, that opportunity didn't come up when I solved it. I seem to recall a pair & triple in column 5 that worked to my advantage. Cool technique. Will have to keep in the toolbox
I did use the UR to break in (and it breaks the whole puzzle, pretty much) - because I saw the 'taboo' in your title - which was kind of a spoiler, the 12's just jiumped right out at me. But the linked puzzle doesn't promise uniqueness!
Yeah, I believe it is not in the rules on SudokuPad. The creators did mention in the pack itself that all puzzles have a unique solution. Great job nonetheless finding the right strategy.
I solved this in 34 minutes, and I'm not totally unhappy with that. I spent too much time with Snyder, then clicked on the video and saw the green box. Then I clicked back on my puzzle and saw the 12, and was able to finish the solve then. Not great, but not horrible either.
That is pretty good, Brad. All of these Dark Arts puzzles will have a uniqueness angle to them in order to solve. I love it though, because Jovial, Shye, Sam, and Philip are 4 of THE best setters in the world.
I spotted the UR almost immediately and ignored it, like I always do, because it feels like cheating. I then spent another 30 minutes trying to find the break in, and failed. Then I watched the video and realised the UR was the point of the video, but I'm still determined to complete the puzzle without the UR. Has anybody else managed it?
I could see the rectangle of 12s with the 7 but really don’t understand why the 7 had to be in box 8. Is it because the 12s couldn’t be solved with out having two solutions? Thanks for these ever interesting puzzles Timberlake.
Hi, It seems your question has not been answered, allow me to respond by saying that you were correct in answering your own question. The principle of no two solutions allows only 7 in that particular cell.
Taboo strategy? Bifurcation or "uniqueness rectangle"? When I became stuck, I could have immediately placed 7 in the green square because the alternative was a 12 deadly pattern. Instead, I went about it the very hard way: bifurcating my usual way using cornermarks. On the other hand, I see that the video isn't very long. 5:20 I returned to an early point in my sole to see if I was going to kick myself for not getting the 24 pair in column 5. Fortunately, I got it by finding the 127 triple first.
Ooops, seems like I got lucky. I miss read cell 6 in block one as beeing a naked singel when in fact it was not. From there everything went smoothly without using the dark art. Think I Will have to try once more this time using logic, not luck 😂

I know that now, I will see if I understood it when I try to solve other puzzles. Thank you.
😀
I relied on my usual process of using chains to get eliminations here and there until it unlocked.
Nice job!

Quite cool Julian. I’ve seen multiple type 7 in puzzles before. Not sure what the limit would be. Thanks for sharing.

Glad to hear that. Did you think it was too much of a spoiler or just helpful?

It comes up often in hard puzzles, Bruce, and is generally a shortcut to other more advanced strategies.

I’ve been using this for years…. Didn’t know it was “taboo” 😭😂😂
I won’t tell if you don’t 😉

@@kennethmiu691 thank very much for clarifying

Unique rectangle was the taboo strategy, John. You were right to be able to place the 7.
