My favorite U2 song...I remember being in Vancouver B.C. drove up from Seattle. Just shaking when they played this song... Saw them live twice in B.C. several times in Seattle. I love the B.C. shows alot.
I often sway between "The Unforgettable Fire" and "Surrender" as my 2 favorite U2 songs. I was in college at FIT in Melbourne, Florida when The Unforgettable Fire album was released. I had the privilege of seeing U2 4 times in one week on that tour all over the state of Florida - all of them being general admission gigs - which means, once you got through the gates, you rushed towards the stage to get the best seats you could find. I got to meet Bono twice after the shows in Hollywood, FL on that tour. Drinking Miller Lites with Bono behind the venue while sitting on the hood of my Jeep - memories I'll never forget!
This one is up there on my desert island playlist. I love the atmosphere it portrays i love the video for it, and it came out the same time as Grace under pressure. At the age of 20, I wore the hell out of these records
UF was my introduction to U2 when I was in college. 500 or so listens of the album. I worked my way backwards and forwards through most if their catalog. I really like your music theory discussions, too, it broadens my listening experience.
Nice song w very good melody and excellent parts that add so much color and vibe like you said. Especially subtle but super effective is how Larry Mullen is hitting the floor tom with each snare hit, to give it that body and nice oomph in his basic but musical groove in the song. Not much guitar here, but the washes of echo and reverb add nicely to the overall feel. Bass is really nice on this, simple and sparse but mature and musical. One of my friends says this song sounds "too cheesy 80s" to him, but that was the time and the song itself transcends any production values of the day. Another example of just great songwriting without having to throw the kitchen sink in. And yes, a nice breather from listening to prog sometimes!
I like this one. Nice changes, nice performances and the production really shines. It's only fault is that it could have been longer. But this entire album succeeds because it's one of those cases where the label backed the group expanding their ambition by hiring big name producers, but the band also stepped up and delivered in the songwriting department.
Better to sit in it, than step in it. Seriously, re: prog and Yes, I tend to like prog. comps that have distinct song sections and qualities that meld/interact. It sometimes seems that some prog and jazz comps create musical congestion. U. Fire is the opposite and is filled with ambient and emotive comps. These are fluid and flow naturally for the listener.
My favorite U2 song ... such an underappreciated song and album.
Mindblowing song
mine too

Top 5 U2 track for me. Always was. Gorgeous
Same. This,
Love Comes Tumbling,
All I Want is You
Ultraviolet
Running to Stand Still.
(Changed over Time)
A joy to rediscover this great album through you!
This song just gets better and better as it moves along

One of the most underrated of U2s greatest
One of my favorites on the album.
Not to get emotional, lol. U2 hits me the same way alot of my Rush music does, even though there different. Love it!
My favorite song on the album 😅
Nice, atmospheric piece.
Masterpiece. Exit off the Joshua Tree is definitely for you big time
I abandoned the live premiere of the Stewart Copeland video on drumeo when I got notified about _this_ one! 😉
My fav track back then. nice reaction J.
I used to be like that (don't care about lyrics) in my youth, at 60 it's changed.
U2 are legends !!!
Their best song.

I love when you geek out on composition!

The Unforgettable Fire is my favorite U2 album the last 2 years. Used to be Joshua Tree.
Always though that was a Fairlight. Another beautiful song with cryptic lyrics.
love u2
I'd forgotten, no pun, about this one. The chorus & strings still grab you. Thanks for a great song & memory.
Adam had used the Slap/Pop technique already on the previous album, 'War' 🙂
…and on October, as well…
@@Black_Swan777 - Oh yes, true! During his bass solo in 'Gloria'! 😀
Yeah. Such a good song and a great album. Been a while since I listened to it so this is cool. Next couple I think are shorter and much different.
Soooou amazing ❤
Lyrics like Jon Anderson

Awesome song...actually the only song of U2 where the studio version is better, than the live version...in my opinion at least
It's nice.. its all about the atmospherics for me... not the greatest set of "changes" I've ever heard.
The Best track is yet to come " BAD " seen by many diehard fans as the best song they have ever written but is best Listened to live "
Live Aid is my eternal memory with that one
BAD was a religious experience in the UF tour, I've been to hundreds of shows and never had that emotional experience like BAD live
