    I've always wanted a Danelectro Long Horn so when the BOSS Bass Katana for Bass was announced I took it as an opportunity to start getting more serious about my bass rig. But will this be a good bass for use in pedal demos (I don't actually care, I'll do what I want and your can't talk me out of it.)

    "boss bass katana for bass" is a crazy unnecessarily long sentence. When you repeat it verbatim 5 times in a paragraph it really, REALLY sounds like sponsored product placement. You've made it clear that's not what you do but "boss bass katana for bass" is pure product placement as a sentence.
    Let me see if i can illustrate it so you can see what I'm getting at ; what the heck else would a Boss Bass Katana be for, apart from bass? Those two redundant words at the end ("for bass") are what pushes it from description into marketing, and puts a question mark above peoples cartoon heads.
    As long as you're using "bass" twice in that sentence you're gonna get questions, accusations, other youtube style hassle. Something to think about?
    Incidentally as a baritone player, bass player, & guitarist in that precise order I use a solid state bass amp for all 3. I remain permanently stunned at how well my Laney RBW200 takes pedals, and how easy it is to sculpt the right EQ for each instrument, all hail parametric mids!

    You should try flatwound bass strings, they have a distinct 60s vibe that works really well for surf. In fact, Carol Kaye swears the style at the time was flatwounds with a PICK! So keep using a pick all you want. If it's good enough for Carol, it's good enough for anyone.

    I used an original Danelectro Longhorn bass in a punk band in the late 70s and it was the greatest sounding bass I've ever heard, especially when I got a chance to use it with an Ampeg SVT with a 8 10" speaker cabinet. It was unbelievably great.

    As an aside, a bassist who can't or won't use a pick when the need calls for it out of snobbishness should be ignored outright. Fingers are great, picks are great. It'll be interesting to see you play bass more, you're a talented guitarist but you're still playing the bass like a guitarist, if that makes sense? Different mind sets, different goals. It’s a cool little iconic short-scale with a sound all its own, largely due to the lipstick pickups and their placement. They can definitely kick butt when you plug them into an actual bass amp. Maybe they’re not for everyone. But maybe that’s the whole idea.

    35 year bass player here. You're allowed to play with a pick through a guitar amp. Solid state amps can be small, light, and powerful. I've heard nothing but good things about Dano's. I absolutely hate their aesthetics and can't get past that. I'm glad you like yours! They're all ugly as sin.

  • @arnolddealiii4259
    @arnolddealiii4259 2 года назад +1

    Solid state in the electrical engineering standpoint is a more efficient way to amplify a guitar signal. Guitarist are nostalgic to the tube amp because their hero’s, and their hero’s hero’s played them. The reality is most people would be completely happy with a modern day solid state amp especially when you are talking about weight and size. A working musician would be wise to take digital processor or solid state amp out on the road just for weight alone, never mind consistency from night to night. I have found as long as I can get volume loud enough to push some air I can’t really tell the difference between a tube amp and a modeler processor amp.

    • @markferguson3745
      @markferguson3745 3 месяца назад

      I'm sorry to hear that you can't tell the difference.Personally, my bias comes from beginning with the typical low end solid state amps ,and coming close to giving up playing until I bought a tube amp( a early Peavy Classic, with the real tweed cab.)Beyond the sound itself, - which is substantially different, - it's the feel and response.Guitarists tend to be conservative, and slow to change, but that's just not the real issue; to my ears, it's similar to people who prefer the music that I don't respond to.

    I’m actually really excited to hear they’re coming out with a Boss Bass Katana for Bass! The guitar version is fantastic for a solid state guitar amp, and bass already works really well with solid state amps. As someone who’s played bass in a band more than guitar I think you’ve got a spot on rig, Danelectro basses are great players and they’ve got a nice sound to them. The pickups could be better for strict bass playing because of how plucky they are, but they’re definitely workable and have a great vibe. I started off with guitar and 30 inch scale lengths are fantastic for people bridging that gap.

      Also absolutely no shade using a pick on a long guitar. I’ve been playing 10+ years and I still regularly use a pick with my Rick. Now, when I hear "Danelectro" the first guy I always think of is Rick Miller from SCOTS but......(and this is why the internet is kinda creepy) After going to my first TMBG show ever a few weeks back they played mostly songs I haven't heard as I'm just a casual listener. The first set was mostly the album John Henry which I really enjoyed. Here's where it gets creepy. I was trying to learn the bass lines from that album and was watching the video for "Snail Shell" and in the video both John Flansburgh (a lefty guitar player) and Tony Maimone (a righty bassist) were both playing Danelectro Longhorns in the copperburst color. (Which having the necks shooting off each direction looked great in the video!) It wasn't two hours before I got an email from Zzounds (who've I've gotten many instruments through) advertising a Danelectro Longhorn bass in copperburst! CREEPY!!!
    One question about this bass... The originals were hollow bodied, is this one as well? (But at less than six pounds I'm almost thinking so...)

    I love this stuff! I like its original shape, but its best is the versatility of sound.
    On this point even better of a j bass for me. I am happy for you!!!

    Short scale bass and pick is Paul McCartney so that's absolutely valid! Add palm muting and bingo! 🙂

    The Longhorn is a legendary bass. There's also a Bass VI version of the Longhorn, and we know you love Bass VI instruments.

      not a bass VI but a baritone (people often confuse those)

    I’m loving that bridge pickup. It sounds like the bass (or baritone) that they used on the Richie Valens vinyl from way back in the day (1958). Carol Kaye was probably the bassist.

    I like it. *shrugs* not that I know anything about basses. If I was going to get one, I might give it a look.

    Two peaces of advice. Nothing wrong with using a guitar amp for the usage for the bass. Just make sure that what ever speaker you are using are rated at least four or five times higher then the Wattage output of the amp. That was the difference would allow the speakers to move without damaging them. In that if you put an Vox AC30 in to a 120 watts Marshal cab. Although you are pumping out 30 watts, but the speakers would have the room to provide for the movement for the speaker cone due to it being at a higher wattage. Also, if using a pick is good enough for Carol King, it is good enough for you. It provide a different tone because the attack on the strings would be different.

      Oh, and the popsicle stick bridge can be set to intonate just fine, at least as well as any acoustic. You can adjust the angle.

    I’ve been a long guitar player for the last 25 years. Only recently got into the skinny string short basses. I’ve never played a long horn, always wanted too though. They look and sound cool.

    On the tube vs. solid state thing, I absolutely prefer to test out guitars in a guitar store using a Boss Katana. They're absolutely everywhere and each one sounds identical. They sound great quiet, too. I would not complain at all if you used them for pedal demos- it's possibly the most fair guitar amp for gear comparisons out there.

    The bridge IS adjustable. The wood saddle swivels. Intonate it according to the E and G, and the open A and D will be as close to right as an actual human would need.
    You raise our lower the action with the two screws at the front of the bridge plate. The back of the bridge plate should be a tiny bit lower than the front of the bridge plate.

    Back in the 60's= Jesse Colin Young. Carol Kay too, Pet Sounds & others. She often used a pick. I think Pau Ferro on the fretboard these days.

      @MN Mitchell of course it is the Guitarlin, the 2 and an half octave guitar. They made a great reissue in the nineties, and I own one.

    I've been thinking about getting a Longhorn bass since the Korean reissues came out in '99/'00 (which is when I bought my first bass). I'm an all short-scale bass guy, so it's long held appeal for me. I can't really justify buying one right now, but it's on my bucket list.
