I've recently com across your channel and content. One thing that I have to commend you on is the message you are delivering without words. As a tradesman/craftsman, I mentor and look for those who have a passion for their craft. You sir, have a passion that is very obvious not through words, but through your glow or reflection of what you are presenting. I was watching the video of the saddle stitch tutorial and when you paused while reflecting on the bag you made for your wife, as well as some of the various glows I've seen while your commenting, narrating, or looking at things you are presenting...that's incredible ownership of your craft and understand you are delivering a piece of yourself in every piece of work you create, no matter if that's content or a piece of leather goods. Bravo sir, I appreciate your talent, delivery, and look forward to following future content. Thank you!
Thank you so much for the very kind comment. Doing videos has been a steep learning curve for myself and my wife Charlene who has had to learn how to do videos in a short amount of time. A comment like yours goes a far way in helping us to keep on pushing and keep on learning.
That 25%angle is a lot like the edge on splitting axes/hatchets. makes sense. After spending years out in the woods, and the last few years working with leather I still hold with the thought that your camping/bush knife doesn't need a razor edge, but your leather cutters do.
It would great to see a video on sharpening bevelers/edgers. Not just maintaining the edge but how to reshape the cutting edge after it has been worn or sharpened wrong. love your videos, much respect for anyone who makes his own tools.
Saw what looked like some Wharnecliffe blades hanging in the background . Been looking into them , I think they will make extremely useful utility knives. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and skills - Roy from tiny Tarkastad in the Great Eastern Cape.
@@CHARTERMADE I am wondering about the possibility of doing a video on selecting my first Chartermade knife, which will probably be my only Chartermade knife for a while because of the relatively - although understandably - high cost. You get what you pay for, and if you care about making quality leather goods, then the choice is obvious Is it possible or advisable to skive with your pattern knife? Any thoughts for those of us that want to own a Chartermde but are on a tight budget? Best regards!
This is the video I've been waiting for. This is just outstanding, the knife has great geometry and I can't wait to be able to make one or get one. I can tell you right now if you were selling these, you would be selling them by the thousands to leather workers around the world. If they could see what you have done here. It's just Incredible! . Cuts Like a razor. Extremely accurate and very useful. Great job on this video, it should have gotten a million views. Take care brother thank you.
What steel do you use in your tools. Rocky Mountain leather here in the states sells your tools and mentions that the steel is from Austria, but not what kind of steel it is.
LOL..did I taunt you into this? Your blade's design certainly got my attention! It's genius and anyone not making their own should feel justified in buying one of yours. The lady behind the camera deserves some credit for the quality of these videos. What do you load the strop with?
I just discovered your channel and I must say your instruction and technique excellent. As a career tool and die maker and general metal worker I would love to see the processes you use to produce your Knives. Especially if you can add insight for the many do-it-yourselfers who may want to custom make something for themselves. As for the finish on the blade shown in the beginning of the video, is that and etched finish or is it some type of Damascus?
I am having trouble keeping the edge on my kitchen chefs knife. Its a Mundial so good steel. I might be sharpening at too low an angle perhaps? What angle do you put on your chefs knives? Also I note both your skiving and curved knives are out of stock on your web site. I am in New Zealand so no close local supplier. Will you have stock soon?
Very nice video and very nice knife. It's probably worth the price but I can't afford that much. Maybe show us a project when your are using all of those techniques with the knife?
Are they sold in u.s.? I have 4 daughters and 4 rescue horses which has lead me to get into leather and I'm tired of using crap tools I have so many scars from using razor blades trying to do what this knife does.
Awesome video, I've been battling to sharpen my round knife! I'd love to see a video with some of your tips and tricks for bag making, gussets and linings are some of the things I'm struggling with.
Oh yes, what grade sandpapers and explain in detail the type of and style of leather, compound if any, and anything else you think is germaine to stropping any blade. Thank you in advance!
My current favourite is the brownells 555 black. NAtural veg tan leather will be best. It will be good to use a 1200 grit water sandpaper for touch ups.
Awesome Teric (correct me if I spelled your name wrong) love your videos. I love all things artisan, especially leather and knifes. I'm new to the craft and I think your videos are the best out there!
Hi. Keeping your blade coated with a light layer of coconut oil etc, and in a cover, will prevent it from rusting. we do offer the pattern knife in Böhler-Uddeholm N690.
Yes, the thickness does effect the cutting performance, as well has the heat treatment, the grind of the knife and steel used and then the combination of how these elements compliment and work with each other.
Hello! great video and excellent knife. I just found your channel and I subscribed because I like the way you present information at is easy to follow. I have been struggling to sharpen my edgers. Could you teach us how to sharpen them.
I absolutely love all the videos, I have certainly learned a lot. Thank you for that. I'm not sure i caught this, but what grit of water paper are you using?

Great instructional video. How about one to show how to make a simple stitching pony?

Hi Max. I'm sure in a future video I shall be doing just that. Thanks for watching.
What alloy of high carbon steel did you make the blade out of?
Are they sold in u.s.? I have 4 daughters and 4 rescue horses which has lead me to get into leather and I'm tired of using crap tools I have so many scars from using razor blades trying to do what this knife does.

When creating the knife, do you use any jig to keep the angle consistent, or is it all done by eye?
Hi John. I do it free hand by eye. 👍
Will you offer this in magnacut steel in the future? I don't use my knife daily and it keeps rusting
Hi. Keeping your blade coated with a light layer of coconut oil etc, and in a cover, will prevent it from rusting. we do offer the pattern knife in Böhler-Uddeholm N690.
Are the thickness of the knife effect the cutting performance?
Yes, the thickness does effect the cutting performance, as well has the heat treatment, the grind of the knife and steel used and then the combination of how these elements compliment and work with each other.
@@CHARTERMADE wow.. Thanks alot..
Great looking knife and presentation. How would a knife like this perform on softer, upholstery or garment leather?
It would perform very well, however a rotary knife will also work well because those leathers are so soft.
Hello! great video and excellent knife. I just found your channel and I subscribed because I like the way you present information at is easy to follow. I have been struggling to sharpen my edgers. Could you teach us how to sharpen them.
Hi Dennis, Thanks for the video request, and yes we are planning to make a video like that soon so keep watching. 👍
could you do a beginners guide on tools please?
Thanks for the suggestion 👍
What size is that sandpaper?
Nice video, well explained. Now one question what is the steel you use for that knife?
Hi Roland. I use D2 steel.
Thanks, good steel, although not my favorite one.
I absolutely love all the videos, I have certainly learned a lot. Thank you for that. I'm not sure i caught this, but what grit of water paper are you using?
