- GM Windshield Washing Fluid Pump - Repair & Replacement
In this video I replace the GM original equipment windshield washer pump with a brand new GM original equipment pump! I also show how I could've repaired the old pump.
There are aftermarket pumps out there for half the price. I chose to stick with original equipment because I've just had better luck with that.

I am a mechanic and to have a video before replacing something for the first time is such a luxury. Of course, I would read the Chilton's, but a video is much better, thank you.
Pretty cool. I would suggest using distilled water if you’re not into washer fluid. Those small pumps and lines are susceptible to wearing out faster and clogging from the suspended particles in tap water. These contaminants eventually build up deposits and can cause erosion and corrosion, and that may be what caused that o-ring to essentially dry up and wear out. If you’ve ever seen a crusty-looking shower head, it’s from the water.
I've got two wire plugs for the washer tank, one for pump motor, and one just goes to the tank itself. I needed to see which one went where and you showed me! The one with the blue top and gray fluted seal goes to the pump. Awesome! Thank you!!
Great video. Funny how your older suburban has excellent access to the pumps. Straight out from the top without removing the reservoir. 2003 suburban has the pumps well down mounted against the reservoir which requires you to take out the entire reservoir to replace. I got the exact same pump you did and it did not fit correctly at first. Even with the new grommet which gave it a little more room it required forcing it into its mounting location. Unlike yours the 2003 pump snaps in to a crevice and that extra stuff on the new pump you point out made it not fit without hard forcing it in. The access you have makes it a joy to replace and the extra piece on the pump has no bearing on it seating properly or not. Thanks for posting!
Jimmy, thanks a lot for this video. I just had the exact same issue and fixed my old pump o-ring.
The day I replaced my wiper blades the pump failed (fluid all leaked out.). Your video got me started and the young man next door pulled the wrenches. The lower housing was split vertically…I didn’t even pry or tug on it. This 05 Lesabre lived most of its life in New England so freezing is a distinct possibility, but why did it fail after a year in South Texas? Buyer beware: replacement pumps seem to retail for ten to twenty dollars. O’Reilly wanted $80.99 for the same Chinese will fit replacement. Anyway your video probably saved me a couple hundred bucks getting repairs at a garage. Many thank you’d.
3:20 was where I was having an issue to insert the replacement pump back into the grommet. It seems to be a very tight fit and it is near to impossible to push it in without some sort of a lube! Gonna try that again, thanks bro!
Yes, try some lube. Should go in.
Good info. Thank you. Getting ready to do some work on my 94 Chevy Suburban.
I always enjoy watching your videos
Ok nice vid. Unfortunately I have a Chevy g-1500 conversion van and it's mission impossible to get access to the pump without taking some stuff off. Luckily for me I shook and nudged the reservoir a few times and my old pump suddenly starts working again😁😁😁 peace from Washington state.
thanks man, i had 2 used ones,BOTH MOTORS FROZEN, APPRECIATE YOUR VID
Thank you, great info!
Nice video Jimmy, I like your style.
Mine from 2001 Tacoma was leaking, so I get new one for $13 from Amazon. Thanks for fix - replace how to.
Thanks!! Just swapped mine out to a new one!
Great video helped a lot thanks!
You can test the motor winding by measuring the resistance of the positive and negative leads of the new pump vs the old pump.
Nice tip.
The pressure is too much, it will destroy the entire system. Just kidding 🙃 thanks for the excellent video my friend.
You the man Jimmy. ....
this video is very helpful
Thanks, I'm a subscriber now.
awesome!
I needed this (weak spray X years)
Thank you for taking the time to make the video Jimmy.
Nice opening! When I was a boy, my mom used to get mad at me because I would wet the bed... from the hallway.
awesome
I thought you were not supposed to run tap water in the reservoir b/c of the mineral deposits.
Start the car this morning and I have wipers and fluid spraying by it self and hard to shut off. I'm going whattt. Test it again and yup , everytime I start the car the fluid is spraying and wipers going. Any idea what's going on ? Governer or modular or something else? Thank you. It's a Nissan Sentra 2017. Always Great video tutorials and educational. Have a great day
Glad I watched this before, need to go get some silicone/lube/grease….or what we called in the Navy “boy butter!”😂😂😂😂
Second fron Spain!!
Thanks, I have the same problem.
My pump won't work and I checked the fuses. I had to have a new computer put in. I have a 98 Chevy s10 and my windshield washer pump quit. I can't seem to find an exact way to replace it. The shop wants $200, but I thought I might be able to do it my self if I can see how to do it. Can you help me?

Was thinking about buying a New washer pump , I want to build a project for my Camper Drinking Water to pump out of my 18 liter plastic jugs filled with drinking water so that there would be 2 jugs each at 18L , how much psi do those pumps have.
Lucky yours are on the top of the tank .My 2005 Denali has them on the bottom of the tank
I've got a 1999 Toyota Corolla LE the reservoir is cracked along one side more like a rotten line across the top Edge so I'll be replacing the reservoir
Mine is down to a trickle I got to do this to mine.
Relaxed mine ... but it still doesn’t spray some times
Be very grateful if someone could tell me why in my 2007 suburban(LTZ) when i turn on the windshield washer fluid it smells like straight gasoline and is leaving a film on my windows. I have ran gallons of water through the reservoir and it still reeks of gasoline and liquid comes out milky looking and you can see the water separating from what I believe is gasoline?? I have never accidentally put gasoline in reservoir so am I confused as to what my problem is and where this gasoline is coming from????. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Replaced this on my truck truck and still no spraying… any one got any ideas. 02 Silverado 1500 no blown fuses and the switch works to use the washer fluid but it doesn’t spray
First 10 seconds: This guy is amazed by a small pump.
I close the video immediately.

Same High quality!!. Come On Jim!. That’s like saying Dodge/Chrysler & reliability
I can't even find a replacement for my cars rear window washer pump :/
Nice! I’d be a bit weary about putting grease on the washer hose.
I put grease on a pressurized coolant return line once, so it would be easy to remove.
Then the hose became too slippery. It almost slid itself off the barb even with a clamp holding it down.
Good to know! Thanks for the input.
Bruh like this is something where you need to stop being such a penny pincher and get a new piece, this isnt rocket science
That GM new part is not going to last nearly as much as the old one, I wont buy any Gm product anymore, quality is crap 😣
