- I crossed the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel as a kid, but hadn't been back in decades. So this was an exciting drive for me! The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel is actually a collection of viaducts with a couple of tunnels and a high bridge, to allow ships to pass over or under.
This real-time video is 22 minutes long, so that gives you some idea of how long it takes to cross the CBBT. Usually, one of the "islands" -- one of the entry points into one of the tunnels -- is open to visitors with a restaurant, but due to road construction, it was closed, as of my visit (and it doesn't look like it will open again any time soon).
As of my drive in August, 2024, with an EZPass transponder, it costs $16 to cross the CBBT one-way. A return trip within 24 hours is an additional $5. Fortunately, at the north end, just before the toll booth, there's a scenic viewpoint which allows you to turn around, so if you're just driving it for the scenery, like I was, the return trip is free.
We'll begin this drive at that scenic viewpoint, and head south across Chesapeake Bay, into the Virginia Beach/Norfolk area.
I made this trip in August 2024.
