Thing is low miles on a diesel truck is actually bad they don’t do well sitting everything goes soon as you start driving it I also had a 6.0 Powerstroke with 60k miles and it was just like your truck always breaking my 7.3 never brakes with 270
12 years ago the high pressure power steering hose blew on my F250. I bought a new one from a local parts store and it lasted less than 1 week. I replace it with a used one salvaged from another super duty I was parting out and it is still on there with 100,000kms and no problems to this day.
I feel this so much. Bought a 95 5.8 fully loaded Eddie Bauer Bronco that sat for 12 years rusting away in Jersey. I love that truck, just wishing it loved me too lol.
Look how lucky you are! You love posting your life on social media, and your truck is giving you so many reasons to be in front of the camera. A match made in heaven! 😅
First things first….GO PATS!!!!! I’m living in AZ, but I’m a southern New England born and raised native. Fam is till there. Anyways, the shop that made that hose. If they are down to duplicate, I’d buy a set or two for sure. My 2000 F350 is staring to have some of the early signs in these same areas you’re dealing with. But hey, no car payments for all my toys and at 24 years old with almost 300,000. Can I complain. Not really. I have goals to build it out into something way better for its next life. Getting a linked suspension for better turn, confront, and off road abilities. Take care of all the common issues. Get a pro 6speed Allison swap, so I can take it on my off road adventures when I need something bigger than my 97 Land Cruiser. I’ve half an elk back to Phoenix in my Land Cruiser. It wasn’t ideal. My long bed with some coolers and space for the head and antlers, much better idea.
You'll figure out what fuel filter configuration you prefer and then keep the spares on hand in your garage. I am daily driving a 2001 F250 as well, I love it. 240k miles so far and hardly any issues. The 6.0 alternator upgrade and 6.7 starter are nice upgrades. These trucks are so awesome, old school but modern enough and simple to work on. You need a Magnum headache rack on that sucker.
I enjoyed the video enough to give it a thumbs up, but I honestly feel like this video is making these things seem more complicated than they really are. And yes I have a 73 and I've been working on cars and trucks for the past 25 years.
I Just bought an 02. Only have done brakes, but the clear difference is that mine is from Texas and doesn’t have a stitch of rust anywhere. Yours looks like a clapped northern rust bucket compared to mine. I do have some minor strange steering problems I believe are due to ball joints.
Loved the show! Keep up the good work. Put the seal on the cap to keep it from being twisted or end up in the threads and torn. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya
I have a 1999 F250 7.3L which is broken down into two production periods (pre/post). It is a critical exercise know your production date. I rebuilt the entire front end of mine to completely get back to a (better than new) steering situation. Lesson learned with O'Reilly's...always confirm the part# and make sure they are sourcing the part from your production year and again, confirm part #. I was starting to get to the point with O'Reilly's that I was going to have to start charging them for mileage from continually screwing up on the parts. Partially my fault as well since I didn't know what I was dealing with. Very critical if you ever change out your hubs. There is a significant and dangerous difference if you put the wrong ones in. Anyhow, appreciate and understand your pain! Trust me though, the truck is simple to work on and when it is running correctly (most of the time) you start to appreciate the pre-emissions era of diesels.
Jake, you're a total, fricken HOOT !!!!! Glad you got your truck going again. Huge problem today (as I'm sure you and everyone else knows), so much of everything we buy comes from.....you guessed it.....China. Not sure what the answer is, but until we get our manufacturing base back on American soil, this stuff will continue. Looked at a new truck last week...stunned to see on the window sticker; USA sourced parts content; 27%. That's disgusting. Anyway, beautiful truck you have there, love your channel!! And finally; FJB !!!!!
I switched my 06 F350 to JIC fitting too, if I remember right the fittings that convert to JIC are British metric. I have 250k on that hose. Good luck on your truck, I like what you've done to it
This is why I will never give up my 1970 F250 Camper Special. I am replacing the original carburated 360fe with a fuel injected '88 460 from a Motorhome . Should be a reliable beast.
I had the issue with the random steering wheel wobbling while driving. Ended up being the vacuum lines for the 4x4 engagement randomly activating one front wheel and throwing the entire truck off. Replaced all that and good as new.
On the 7.3 the brake booster assists the power steering which is why you loose both at the same time. It also uses ATF which is why you had that smell.
The brake booster does not assist the power steering. The power steering supplies pressure to the hydroboost unit. They both utilize the power steering pumps pressure but do not assist one another.
Really very simple issues when it comes to these. Serviced many of them over time. I was screaming axle shaft ujoint the second you described the problem. More importantly your front axle shafts is are not supposed to be rotating when in 2wd, if it is you need to replace your 4x4 hub acutator/switch. You should also not leave them engaged when not using 4x4.
I own a fleet of 7.3 s . It is the only truck my company uses. I would chaulk this up to reading to many forums and not bring it to a pro shop from the begining. Everything that Ive seen go bad could have been fixed easy this a shop that knows what they are doing. There are millions of these truck around, nothing on them is a mystery to fix.
Another problem you have with Ford trucks is there's almost zero Caster on the front wheels. There is a fix for that. There is a bolt that creates a caster for that upper spindle nut, and it straightens out that lack of castor
I was having the same issue on a 01 with the steering. It was the same feeling you get when you go over an uneven patch of road that just kind of pulls you off the line for a second and you could go right back. It ended up being the hyrobooster.
You absolutely got a bad egg I have a 2001 7.3 with 270k and haven’t had no issues the last 5 years. And it’s built. Built transmission and turbo and injectors.
Man, I’ve been watching your two videos on this steering issue. I’m sorry I’ve got no one and I did put a new gearbox steering box in. I got a redhead because I shared the Pitman arm bolt off, but I haven’t had the steering issue you’re talking about in anyway, I keep blowing the seal Out for the axle to stay tightly on my short shaft I would also I was looking at new springs for the front look bad another thing just let you know if you push the red button on the seatbelt. It won’t ding all the time. good luck I hope you find the problems and get them fixed.
Oh ok that makes sense I suppose. I ha e owned a lot of different makes and models. Never saw that on the cap or in the manual. I also haven't checked my 7.3 because I just got it and the steer fluid is full. Thanks I'll keep an eye on that before I put the wrong stuff in

hopefully your trolling with that tire rotation you cant swap sides its only front to back bqck to front making the tire were in the other direction will blow the belt quickly.... im sure your aware
Did your dad not teach you to not buy Ford? I see he drives Chevy…smart man! Things I learned working in a tire shop without a truck lift: Sit on a bucket and use your feet to lift the tires, steer them with your hands. Super easy! Saves your back..
Thats a pump/steering box problem not a hose problem. They don’t blow if the hydraulic steering pump system is working properly. My father has 300k on his. Never blew one.
That’s far too much truck for you, hand. U need to trade it in for a Prius. The orifices on the “new factory pump” are different from the actual original pump it came off the line with. Duralast Gold have the correct fittings. Ford hoses do not correspond with their own “new” reman parts. Also find the factory cap and replace the element. Don’t mess around with those 1 piece bs filters. Soak it in diesel before you install it. Now, next thing to go is your fuel pickup foot.

Caster angle plays a role. They make caster inserts I believe for that model. It will help with joints as well.

Sorry to break the bad news to you it hates you. My DD is a 88 bronco I could have bought 2 new trucks for the money I've spent.
I also had to learn about the fuel filter cap years ago.
Once you have that truck runnin its going to live forever.
I recommend getting the Lees Power steering pump conversion kit ....makes the truck steer like a rolls Royce
I’ve owned my 1995 super duty 7.3L over 20 years, welcome to the misery youngster. Good thing the Corvettes always run huh!
My 97 was garbage, needed a new engine. But now it has over 300k miles so not to bad I guess.
@@RipliWitani same, 392k miles replaced the original 7.3L with a Ford reman 7.3L about 7 years ago.

Anything fuel injected is garbage compared to a modern carb. We used to put them on new ls3 and put put huge power
I drove mine to the shop from my house with no power steering or hydro assist brakes lol 😢it took a lot of elbow grease hahaha
Only use ford motorcraft parts. I’ve been driving my 2001 f250 7.3 for 23 years. They are fantastic.

Owning a old f350 will turn u in to a diesel mechanic real quick and also a joint expert but hold steady cause that truck is the last of the good ones
I'm sitting at 420k on my 2000 and don't mind a bit turning wrenches to keep it rolling
And buy napa or full force diesel parts
Drain ,remove ,close the drain ,fill the housing 60%, with ATF , install the new filter ( lube the o-ring ) and start
