      I can give you my perspective as a someone who bought a planner by an artist who makes a year-round diary that customers can colour in (grown-up colouring being a thereputic, relaxing thing). I got the spiral version of her planner because I wanted the lay-flat option. I'm also an author and poetry editor so I've looked at Lulu's production end. Firstly, there's no way the paper is 89 gsm. This is BS, it's more like 70 gsm (80 being normal copier paper and 102 being prefered for notebooks like this), and not great for artists producing adult colouring books or people making diaries or workbooks. This means that ink WILL show through the pages, which isn't great even for a normal notebook or workbook. I used coloured pencils and biros on mine, but then I had another issue. With repeat use, the spiral binding of the book tore the paper, and the spiral binder wasn't set far enough into the book to prevent tearing of even normal weight paper. With repeat use the planner became so fragile I couldn't take it with me...and the lack of hard-back cover also led to it not being durable.

      Thanks for sharing your experience. Admittedly, I felt the same way about the paper. Rather flimsy.
      Fortunately, I my spiral bound book is just for notes.
      Sorry to hear about your experience.

    Lulu should offer to put the spiral on the other side for left-handers like me. I'd go to town making left-handed journals.
    FYI, left-handers can't use normal spiral bound, it's torture on the hand.

      After using this book, I’m pretty happy with it. I’m just disappointed we can’t get distribution to Amazon. Thanks for the kind words and comment.

    Two things about this book make it worth the higher cost. First, the spiral binding means that you can fold it flat, so the open book is the size of the closed book. (And this book is A5 size, slightly smaller than 6 x 9, which also helps.) This means that you can hold the book in one hand, while writing with the other hand. This is a HUGE benefit if you are taking notes in the field. If you are sitting at a desk, the perfect-bound edition might be acceptable, but not out in the field. And then I also made the lines very light. This way, if you create a diagram or a sketch, you can scan it into your computer, and play with brightness, contrast and gamma to make the lines disappear, and you can drop your sketch right into your Work In Progress. No need to recreate your sketch. The book can masquerade as an unlined sketch book.

    The book I published through KDP needs to be spiral bound but this is the 1st I've seen anything about being able to do this through another website. I'm not worried about royalties. The point of the book is to help me and others make their life easier as I'm on the autism spectrum and it something that helped me. So now I'm wondering what would the copy right issue be if I tried to republish it through a website that lets me spiral bind

    I was wondering how cool publishing Moreau as a spiral-bound novel as opposed to hardback watching, Dale.

      I haven't checked out many alternatives, though I did find one potential avenue called Vervante. I legitimately thought it was an MLM company when I heard the name. haha Give them a look and let me know your thoughts.

    • @DaleLRoberts

      Hmm...I don't recall. haha You stumped me. To my recollection, no. But, it wouldn't be the first time my memory failed me. Go to their site and whip together one. The process didn't take me more than ten minutes. If you have a no content interior, you can always use their cover creator and draft up a book fairly quick.

    Hello! Im actually looking into Lulu for my book and this video helped a lot! Do you know any reasonable places that will print your book thats a hardcover spiral bound or coiled bound book?

    • @DaleLRoberts
      @DaleLRoberts  6 месяцев назад +1

      If you're looking for cheaper prices, you're probably going to want offset printers. Puffer Print, Vervante, and Inkfluence are a few off the top of my head that could help.

    • @DaleLRoberts

      I don't know of any platform in self-publishing that is currently producing anything of this sort. Our choices are matte or glossy. It would be amazing to be able to customize covers to this extent or even have some additional cover materials, but I don't see this anywhere on the forefront.
