Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I actually had to DEMAND that my boyfriend did this procedure. He said it was a waste of time. I had to stand and watch him take off both cables. The look on his face when it started was priceless. Girlfriend diagnoses problem, problem fixed... High five for girlfriend power!!!

I have the 2013 vw jetta 2.5 and Disconnecting the battery for a few minutes fixed mine as well. Unfortunately i took it to the dealership before i found this video and had to pay $125 diagnostic fee for them to tell me they couldn't figure it out but thier recommendation was i needed a new reader coil at the cost of another $565. I found this while i was waiting to hear back from them and told them no on that service. Thank you for the video you saved me some money and a huge headache!
Just want to add one more data point. 2014 Mercedes E350, no key detected, the fob works fine for locking/unlocking with a new battery. I did exactly what you said then it worked like a miracle! I watched more than a dozen RUclips videos, this is the only one that really works!
Even after getting a second key programmed which I needed anyway but it wasn’t the key that was the issue. This was my last hope before calling the mechanic and it worked, thank you so so much , you saved me a trip and potentially hundreds of dollars just trying to get this diagnosed. I had a 2008 Mazda CX nine grand touring with the smart key.
Worked on my Hyundai Kona 2022. Context: I changed the car battery today. After that, I could lock and unlock it with the beeper but no key recognized inside the vehicle. This method fixed it and worked like a charm! . THANK YOU!
This happened to my daughter’s Mazda 6. I did what you recommended and ‘voila’ it worked. The Mazda owner’s manual told me to take it in to the Mazda dealer - so now I don’t have to pay AAA for towing and the dealer tons of money. This is such an amazing and easy fix!
You sir are a genius. I just bought a Honda with a smart key error message. The dealer did replace the battery and reset but connecting to the computer. All was good until the next day when message came back. I did your tip and it's all good again. Thanks so much.
Thank you so much for this video. 2012 Buick Regal went into no remote detected. Put the fob in the slot and car still wouldn’t start. Thought maybe the battery since I had not used the car in 10 days so I took the battery to have it checked and it checked out good so I put it back in and thought what the heck & pushed the start button and the car started right up. You saved me a lot of hassle so a BIG THANK YOU AGAIN. 👍🏻🙏🏼
Glad this helped you out! Thanks for checking out the video and leaving feedback! Others have mentioned the same sequence for removal, it is the proper way. Thanks again!
Lacie Smith not a problem! Glad it helped! :) You may continue to get the error in the future. If hitting the lock or unlock button does not help, just do the same thing you did tonight. If you need a full reset, just disconnect the battery for around 5 mins then hook it back up and give it a try :)
Had my Mazda CX 5 sitting for over 7 months on a battery minder and car started up with one of the remotes but would not do anything with the other. Tried some of the other suggestions on YT but they did not work. Tried your suggestion and now both remotes work and start the vehicle. Thank you for your insight and the suggestion.
We just had that problem on a 2009 Audi A4 after changing cars battery. I searched for the problem and Audi A4 key fob not being recognized by the car. Then I stumbled upon your video. We disconnected both negative and positive and sure enough the car started right up. Thank you so much
Brilliant...I'm going to try this. Have this error after changing my fob battery....it's been driving me crazy but do not want to go to dealership. Thank you for uploading ☺
Hopefully this works well for you! I have since sold my car, but I did not have any further issues with it before I sold it. I sold it about a year ago.
Did this after my key stopped being detected. Changed the battery key and it was still the same. So I disconnected the car battery for a few minutes and reconnected and it worked and no problems. Mine was a 2010 ford focus. Very grateful for this video 😊👍
Edit: This did work for me after reading your timely response...Thank you! This did not work for me.... changed the keyfob battery too....it gives "no key detected" & "incorrect key ID" messages. The keyfob still operates the locks, trunk, radio, etc, ....it just won't start. If you push the start button with the key, it will attempt to start with just clicking noises. Also, I had the battery disconnected long enough to lose the radio presets
That's a bummer! Some of the symptoms you are describing lead me to think your car battery may be weak. If so, that could be why your locks work but it won't start or just clicks.
@@therep49er I thought the battery was good cuz my nephew checked the volts with a multimeter, but sure enough, that was the problem. After reading your reply, I tried jumping the car with my truck & got a slight amount of rotation & no "wrong key" messages. Left it hooked up for 5 m8nutes with the same result so I put my daughter's Altima battery in & it fired right up! Thaks so much from your newest sub👍👍
That was very very helpful I have a 2014 Ford Explorer no key detected .I'll put it in the arm carsole but it still came up a few times. thank you so much
Worked for me too! Had a weak battery and key fob not recognized. After charging and going clickkkkkkkk couple times screen went blank. Found this video pulle cables for 10 min. Reset cables recognized key charged up battery. Fired right up. Thanks!
Do i need special tools to disconnect the terminals? Im not car savvy and this is my first time dealing with a car alone, thank you for the video and help!
No special tools needed. You either need a 3/8 or 1/2 inch wrench, or in metric sizes a 10 mm or 13 mm wrench. Most tool sets nowadays come with both. You want to use the one that is most snug on the nut or bolt. You can use a ratchet and socket or wrenches, whichever fits easiest.
thank you !! This was a temporary fix for me. Sometimes my car would detect the key, and sometimes it wouldn’t. The problem is not consistent so I’m not sure if it’s my key or somthing else.
Very happy I've stumble up on your video, because it worked :) So happy, thank you very much ! But do you know why this happens ? what is the connection with the battery?
@@roxanal.6417 well, without any real evidence lol. I work in the auto industry (skilled trades), in our plants when we run into issues we have a saying "when it won't work, reboot it and see what happens" lol. So, when this happened, I decided to reboot the car so to speak. And it just so happened to work. Lol.
Thank you so much! wow it worked the first time and was driving me insane. Not sure why this happen other then me plugging in my trailer and it messed with the computer or something in the cars brain. In any event this was the trick. Score for the little guy and not a stealership.
Had this issue with my 2010 Taurus Limited Intelligent Access Key( push button start) so I changed the fob battery and the car battery and still kept getting no key detected. Well i ended up finding the problem and it was the wiring harness under drivers seat. My driver seat moves every time i get in or out of car and that harness moves also since its clipped to bottom of seat and over time it caused a wire to sort. This harness comes from the center console to the bottom front of driver seat and its part of the cars immobilizer module that under center console. I found the short by luck and by putting my hand under seat and moving harness and when it moved the right way it registered my key and started
So my car does turns on and the key light only comes on when I’m in reverse or drive. What do you think it could be? I changed the battery today but not the exact same one but the key fob worked fine and I disconnected the battery and everything and still nothing. I finally found the exact battery I had before so imma try that but what do you think it is? Thank you!
Tough to say on that one. I have not encountered it only happening when the car is in a certain gear. But, Initial thoughts lead me to belive there may be an issue with a sensor. Which sensor... That is something I can't really chase down without seeing the car in person.
If I recall correctly, I think the battery has to be the exact same one so imma just give it a try and see what happens when I get the batteries. My car is a infiniti g35x 07 automatic but when I put it in manual and I downshift, it doesn’t react and then out of nowhere it goes down very heavy. Idk man, I’m going crszy
@@zretro-_rd5714 I am also not familiar with Infinity. But I am very interested to find out if using the exact battery replacement solves the issue. @@neilwilliams2193 Hello and thanks for checking out the video and leaving a comment. I am not sure what you mean by standard regular key. If you mean one without a chip in it, then you shouldn't be getting a no key detected fault. What is the year, make and model of your car?
So I got a g37 2008 and it has the key light on and won’t turn on .changed the key battery and checked the battery all good . Do you think I need to reprogram my key
Checked the car battery? Or did you disconnect the car battery for a few minutes? If you checked the fob battery, disconnected the car battery for a few minutes, then it is possible you might have to reprogram the key. If you have a spare key, try using the spare and see if the issues persist with the spare key.
I have the exact same vehicle and my remote start is not working just the unlocked and locking works not the small ford key fob it just beep once but won’t turn over any ideas on wat it could be dealerships want 165 just diagnosed it any advice would be appreciated thanks and great video by the way
Unfortunately, this does sound like a mechanical issue. If the fob works for lock/unlock but not starting, I would bet it is the fob or the part that receives the signal for starting. That is a best guess though. Thanks for checking out the video and leaving a comment. Please check back and let us know what the issue ends up being.
I have a 2014 Lincoln MKS. I have an intermittent problem with both keys. I have new batteries in both fobs. Sometimes, I cannot open the locks with the touch sensor, sometimes I can. I can unlock the car with the fob from 30-40 feet away, so it has a good signal. When I get into the car again sometimes, I get the "No Key Detected" Error. When this happens, while sitting in the car, I use the fob to unlock/relock the car doors and it usually starts right up afterwards. I do not have any issues starting the car (when the key is detected), so I do not think my car battery is going out. I will disconnect the batty to reset the system, but I do not think this is the problem since it is intermittent. I disconnected the auto battery and place it on a trickle charger to top it off (suggested from another video). After 5 hours, I cleaned the terminals and hooked everything back up. Did not fix. I have the same issues with both keys. Suggestions, thanks.
Thank you for the detailed comment! That is often helpful to others. 100% interested to see if this solution helps/works for you. Please come back and let us know the outcome!
Hi from the UK my Toyota auris 2012 smart remote won't work for the unlock and lock and says key not recognised bit it will start up when I hold the fob on the push button and put my foot on the clutch pedal us it safe to try your car battery disconnect method ?? And why does this problem happen ?? Thanks from the UK 👍👍😄
@@5905-k8v Hello from the USA! You can absolutely try this method. It is no different than replacing your car battery. Have you replaced the battery in your key fob? That could also be a potential issue. As to why this happens, well... I don't know 100% why. But, my best guess is that auto makers don't know every potential issue that will arise. There are many rigorous tests that go into vehicles. But, things pop up that nobody thinks of. This issue may be one of those things. After posting this video, this issue has been seen in a variety of cars from many companies. So I know it is not isolated to one company.
@@therep49er thank you the battery has been changed in the fob but made no difference so I will try your method ! And after I disconnect the battery for a minute and reconnect the battery will the remotes central locking start working again ??
You have no idea how many "Just replace the key fob battery!" Videos I had to scroll past to find this. I have a question though. My car detects the key initially but after driving it a bit it can't find the key anymore. It's like it forgets the key exists. I know how to start it still but it is very annoying. Do you know if this kind of thing would help? Or if it is a deeper issue
@@rogueturnip3 All I can say is that it won't hurt or cost you any money to try this. It's no different that replacing your car battery. If the problem persists though, you may need to have a dealership/mechanic look at it. Try to take it there while the undetected key is happening. Otherwise they will not likely be able to recreate the issue and will charge you for nothing.
I have a Nissan Altima 2014. I thought I lost the original key fob but after purchasing a generic one weeks later I found my original one but that one is no longer working how can I reprogram to go back to the original key fob because that one allows me to start the car roll down the windows from in the house. (change battery- still nothing)
Well, this is a bit different. I know there is a way. I am just not sure what is the way. But, I did a quick Google search and the instructions in this Blog make sense to me. www.midwaynissan.com/blog/2022/february/23/how-to-program-nissan-key-fob-push-start.htm#:~:text=Press%20and%20hold%20any%20button%20from%20your%20fob's%20keychain%20until,should%20take%20about%20three%20seconds.&text=Once%20you%20stop%20seeing%20the,key%20fob%20has%20been%20programmed.
Unfortunately without your key, your only option is a tow truck to get it home or to a dealership/mechanic. The dealership can likely make you a new key based off your VIN number. A mechanic can possibly replace your whole ignition tumbler. But, if you need the original key for anything else (trunk, doors, gas cap ect.) you will still need the original key. So, best advice if your car is not already at home, get it towed to your Nissan dealership of choice and have them make you a key... Better yet, 2 keys. If the car is at home, get your VIN #, call the dealership and tell them your VIN and request a key. This may take one day... or 5 or 10? It just depends on what their process is and what they need to do.
Actually you just need to disconnect your ground cable from your battery..wait 5 minits reconnect..and Wahala..! And I'm one of those guys at the dealership that will charge you 186.00+tax and a 75$ pre repair diagnostic test..
So when this doesn't work and changing the battery doesn't work than what else could be the issue? Also does the battery have to be an exact match or does it not matter as long as it's the same size?
Make sure your key Fob battery is good. Your car battery has an "acceptable range" for its specs of CCA (cold cranking amps) and physical size that will fit in the car. Along with some other things. But, the CCA and physical size are the most common concerns. Top or side post doesn't make a difference. All that matters there is getting the same post style battery so you don't have to change connections.
@@therep49er it was but I knew the memories would b lost, I grew up in an auto repair shop. It’s easier and faster to c if anyone on u-tube has done what I’m about to do than sit and look up 50 different files from a paid service like identafix or mitchel
@@macgyverpreppin4056 it's odd. I didn't lose any memory in mine when I did this. Not sure why. But I am glad this helped you out with no key detected error.
I am not 100% certain. But, in my opinion, your original key should still work as it always has. The keys are programmed to the car. So any key that is programmed to the car should theoretically always work with that car. Hope this answers your question 🙂
I'll try this but only 1 key is giving me the not found error. I'm afraid the problem is with the key. It does lock and unlock the doors. It also starts the car if I first lock the doors with the fob while sitting in the driver's seat.
@@therep49er the battery is the 1st thing I replaced. There are 2 batteries in this fob. They were both replaced. I measured voltage of the old batteries and they measured full and the same as the new batteries. I'll measure the batteries in the other, working fob but don't think batteries are the problem.
@@therep49er no idea on fob age. We bought the car with 20,000 miles 3 or 4 years ago. It now just turned 80,000. Fob is likely original. Edit: the next question will be what are the options for repair or replacement. These smart keys have turned a $2 problem in no a $400 problem.
Excellent question! Unfortunately, I don't have a solid answer for you. It could be the battery in your fob is weak/dying. It could be something more than that. I am not really well versed with remote starting.
If you disconnect the battery in any car. You automatically wipe the radio stations. And if it is a newer vehicle it has anti theft Built-in the radio. Would need to get the code from the owner's manual or the dealer.
In some cases you are correct. But, not all cases. It is extremely difficult to know all makes and models reactions with radios/anti theft when replacing/disconnecting the battery. But, I can tell you 100% for certain, 2010 Lincoln MKT has no loss of radio stations and no adverse reactions with any anti theft. This is also true for 2018 Chevy Silverado, 2019 Toyota Highlander, 2008 Jeep Patriot, 2013 Chevy Malibu, 2009 For Escape, 2012 GMC Acadia and Many other cars. 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix, you do run a risk of losing radio stations and triggering the anti theft system.

Thanks for the video. This is the 4th time I have had this issue on our 2015 Edge. First two times the Dealer couldn't find anything, 3rd time, they replaced the battery in the vehicle. I have replaced the batteries in the FOBs several times. I get the "No key detected error" at times then I get the "Press the brake error" all of the time now while I am actually pressing the brake. I have tried placing the FOB into the "by-pass" slot with no luck. I will try to pull the battery cables off at lunch. If that doesn't work, my next decision will be to decide on what wall to bang my head against.. Any ideas what would fix the vehicle?
Sorry you are having a rough time with your vehicle. My best guess and it purely a guess, since everything you listed has been done, the only thing that remains that I can think of would be some type of electronic or computer component in the car. If it is that, hopefully it is a warranty repair. Since this happened in my car, I have not had many or any issues like I was prior to disconnecting the battery for a few minutes. The issues I did have after resetting everything were likely because I walked too far from the car with the keys. In which case it was responding properly. Best of luck, hope the reset remedies your issue or that it is a warranty repair.
@@therep49er what actually happened was, we got the car from a previous owner who may have not known how to reprogram the 2 original dealership keys when it run out of battery so what he did was he got an aftermarket keyfob-- result is the keyless entry (with blinking lights & autofold mirrors) funtions are no longer working with the original keys and everytime after turning the ignition on it prompts "no ford key detected" so what we do is just press the OK button on the left side of the steering wheel....the key blades (inside the fobs) though in the original keys are still being recognized by the car's system and autofold mirrors and blink lights work....mechanic says try to have the keys reprogrammed...tried almost all DIY key reprogramming that I watched on RUclips to mo avail....appreciate your expert opinion on what I should do....
@j.domingo224 100% I would try to reprogram the keys. If you give your VIN to the dealership, they should be able to produce keys/fobs that work as intended for your vehicle. However, that is likely to cost around $100 or more per key fob.
I am not 100% positive if it will. I can say it won't hurt. The process is no different than changing the battery when it is time for a new one. So, it is a free option to try resolve the issue. Hopefully it works for you!

Sorry to hear this. My best suggestion to find out how to "reprogram" your key Fob. It should be in your owners manual if you have that. Otherwise RUclips will likely have a decent video on fob programming.
Are you still having the issue or did attempt to disconnect and reconnect the new battery already and the issue has gone away? If you are still having the issue, try replacing the battery in the key fob. Or, use your spare key (if you have one) and see if that helps.
@@therep49er Thanks soooo much for responding!!!!! Actually, I took the car to Ford for it's regular oil change a couple of months ago. (the usual 5 point safety check now costs $200) Anyway, the guy said my battery needed to be replaced. I told him that it had just been replaced in March (under warranty). He looked at my record and seemed confused. I didn't replace it. Then the issue with not wanting to start came up. OK. So I get a new battery. SIL put it in and checked the alternator. He said it was fine. The next day it didn't want to start on first try...started on the third. I called Ford. Talked to a guy in the service dept. Turned out they didn't replace my battery in March!!!!! Just put a charger on it!!!!! LIED!!!!!! OK.... So, I'm trying to figure out the starting issue..... and the message it gave me today. I thought about the dead key battery, but I had both of them in my purse. Also, every once in a while, it will tell me, no key detected while I'm driving.
@@debbiekern2841 Gotcha! So, you will definitely want to have the car battery replaced if you haven't already. That may or may not solve your no key detected issue. It's a good starting point though. What year is your vehicle? Have you had the key fob batteries tested/replaced? Sometimes auto parts stores have a tester for the fob batteries. A weak fob battery will cause the error. Even if it is still starting the car. It just means it's getting to the point where it will soon be too weak to start the car and the no key detected error will happen everytime.

Ive exhausted all other options so might as well ask here too.. We're having this issue with a 2015 Ford Focus SE and it keeps getting no key detected even though its got a physcial key. When it happens 3 other issues all come up at the same time, doors wont lock/unlock, blinker wil randomly stay on after completing a turn, and the hill climb assist disables.. All within a span of about 10 minutes these will all happen. The only fix seems to be D/c battery but the issue just eventually comes back within a day.. Brought to a mechanic and they checked battery, charging system, and electrical and couldnt find any problems. OF COURSE the issue wouldnt happen for them for the 4 days they had it so they were unable to replicate the issue and troublehsoot with it happening.. Any suggestions please! We've replaced the battery in the key fob as well just in case..
Is your Focus included in a "Door Latch Recall"? The dealership should be able to confirm that with just a phone call and your VIN#. A faulty door latch could cause the won't lock/unlock issue. For the "no key detected" since you said you have a physical key, I assume you do NOT have push to start? If you do not have push to start, do you have a spare of the physical key? If so, try the spare and see if the problem persists. Physical keys for that car still have a chip that transmits a signal when needed. If that chip is malfunctioning OR the vehicle has an electrical system issue, it can cause the no key detected issue. There is also potential that the keyless entry module is starting to go bad. Are you the only owner of the vehicle since it was new? Has it ever been in an accident? If you bought the car used, did it have a "rebuilt" title? If the car was in a serious accident, that can cause MANY little electrical and mechanical gremlins even after it was "repaired". For the hill climb assist... This also could have many gremlins to chase. Could be as simple as the Brake Light Switch needed to be replaced. That switch might affect your turn signal staying on to? It sounds like you have more than one issue affecting multiple areas of your vehicle. That is why I asked if it was in any accidents. I don't think you will get lucky enough to have a "quick fix" on this. I think you have many frustrating days ahead trying to chase and resolve these issues.
I tried to disconnect my Kia forte battery for 1 hour and reconnected back but still showed not detected, until i leave my car battery disconnected for 3 days, then it works ! May I know what's the reason?
Thank you so much for posting, it must go thru a re-initialization process when battery power is removed. Ya know, I had to do battery terminal service anyway! Thanks again!

But sometimes the car starts no problem. Already had a new key made and programmed... That wasn't the problem either.
It sounds like there is a deeper problem. I know that you had a key made already, but make sure the battery in the fob is good. Otherwise, you are likely looking at possibly needing the dealership to diagnose/fix the issue.

Thanks for the info! Hopefully this helps others as well!

@@jenniferwaggoner2752 If you were asking me, I don't have a SAAB. Mine was a Licoln MKT.
Any help with my Nissan bluebird sylpy. I lost the key. And my car was grounded on the street for two nights now!
Appreciate the knowledge

So when this doesn't work and changing the battery doesn't work than what else could be the issue? Also does the battery have to be an exact match or does it not matter as long as it's the same size?
Make sure your key Fob battery is good.
Your car battery has an "acceptable range" for its specs of CCA (cold cranking amps) and physical size that will fit in the car. Along with some other things. But, the CCA and physical size are the most common concerns. Top or side post doesn't make a difference. All that matters there is getting the same post style battery so you don't have to change connections.

I am not 100% certain. But, in my opinion, your original key should still work as it always has. The keys are programmed to the car. So any key that is programmed to the car should theoretically always work with that car.
Hope this answers your question 🙂
Doesn’t matter which one you take off first? Or positive than negative
You really only need to remove the negative cable.
I'll try this but only 1 key is giving me the not found error. I'm afraid the problem is with the key. It does lock and unlock the doors. It also starts the car if I first lock the doors with the fob while sitting in the driver's seat.

.do i need to re program in toyota dealer?

My best suggestion to find out how to "reprogram" your key Fob. It should be in your owners manual if you have that. Otherwise RUclips will likely have a decent video on fob programming.
I got the "Restart now or key is needed" message a week after putting in a new battery because it had trouble starting.
@@therep49er The battery was replaced a week ago.

I thought about that. It starts with both keys, but it almost acts like it doesn't acknowledge the key. Thanks for taking the time to chat with me. I'm a widow.... Don't know much about cars.
Well... This one is pretty different. Let me do some digging tonight while I am at work. I will see what I can figure out.
What does the no key detector look like on the dash
@@Tns85 on my vehicle it literally scrolled across the same screen as the odometer. And said "no key detected".
I tried to disconnect my Kia forte battery for 1 hour and reconnected back but still showed not detected, until i leave my car battery disconnected for 3 days, then it works ! May I know what's the reason?
I wish I had an answer for you on this. That is really odd! If you discover a reason for this, please let us know!
Thank you so much for posting, it must go thru a re-initialization process when battery power is removed. Ya know, I had to do battery terminal service anyway! Thanks again!
Not a problem! Glad it helped ya out. Thanks for checking out the channel and watching a video!
I just drove the car 6 hours ago, and I found that it would not start this morning. Disconnecting and reconnecting the battery terminals did not fix my problem. Getting no key detected error.
@@therep49er not a push button start.
It is an actual key with a fat rubber grip.
Gotta insert key and twist like most cars.
Doubt it has a battery... Looks like I'd have to cut rubber away with a knife if anything... Which I will not attemp.
When I insert key, it dings and makes all appropriate ignition sounds.
The screen in the dash instrument panel runs through its systems checklist and stops at "no key detected"
car has power
Windows/wipers will work
Radio plays
Buttons, head lights, brakes, etc.
Screen displays "no key detected" and engine will not turn over even once.
I drove the car to the laundromat at 3am last night.
No key detected 6 or 7 hours later...
OK, Resetting is something else, And what was the problem?
Original problem. "No key detected". After getting through that, the fault would not "clear/go away". This video was to "clear" the no key detected fault.
Ok thank you
what about the key detected when driving? Doors unlock and lights come on? Lexus RX350 rear hatch listed as open.
Well, I haven't heard this one.
Sounds like it loses recognition of the key while you're driving, correct?
It certainly won't hurt to follow this method in the video. It is no different than changing your car battery.
If it does not work, you likely have a deeper issue that may require a dealership or good mechanic.
