Pressure tested cooling system and found main engine coolant Radiator leaking.
Replaced Coolant Radiator.
Awesome video, my 540i is leaking from the exact same corner at 72k miles. Gotta love plastic radiator end caps :) must be a wide spread issue with these models
Just got one myself 2 weeks ago
Same problem here
Man you did my life easier ,thanks and may God keep people like you healthy ❤
Great video. Mine just failed in the exact same area under a pressure test. Can't find anyone that has the radiator in stock smh
I also cound not find the part, several sites were all sold out. Had to purchase from local BMW Dealership, price was about $760.
Thank you! Well edited and very helpful. Mine was leaking in the exact same spot.
How much cost you the radiator and where did you buy it ?
Same question… please where did you order parts
I always order from both autohausaz.com and rmeuropean.com, but both had radiator out of stock so I purchased from local BMW Dealership. Price was about $760.
@@thatonebmwguy9925 i was wondering if i get fully aluminum after mark one so the plastic doesn't crack up anymore ,how ever they advised me to use the original one.
My friend has a body shop he ordered it for me . Shop price 575$.
About to do mine tomorrow your video is a godsend
My 2017 540 is in the shop now for this. Great video man thx for doing it
I got the same problem did you just change the radiator I'm thinking of changing the upper and lower hoses to save my self headaches in the future
@arosmytu2157 yep, when I took to the shop they said it was leaking from the radiator and needed replaced. I was hoping it was the coolant tank only but unfortunately not. Paid $1400 for new radiator, that's including parts and labor. All good now, except now my a/c isn't blowing as cold as it did before smh.

Definitely a recall because I got a leak in the same spot smh .. great video champ u saved us all thousands of dollars lol💯🤣
me too
Thank you for your hard work! I'm going well! ^^
Exact same issue I’m going through now with the BMW 540i
I’ve got a a question do you have to drain the A/C system before you do this? I’ve got a 2018 530i xdrive and I was wondering if I needed to do that?
You do not need to evacuate a/c with a 2018 530i xDrive. Procedure should be very similar if not exact same as this video. Front differential or front axles should not get in the way. I checked repair instructions (All Data) for the 2018 530i xDrive model, and it does not show work for a/c either before removal or after to recharge.
Hope this is helpful.
mine had this issue today. thank you for uploading man. ure great. btw my foreman told me to just change the hoses not the radiator.
The coolant hose from upper radiator to the coolant outlet pipe on engine block, was replaced about 2 months before the radiator started leaking.
It was first the coolant outlet pipe on block was leaking. Then upper radiator hose leaking. Then high temperature (big) coolant expansion tank leaking. And last repair was the radiator leaking. Most coolant components are made of the same plastic type material and by 70-100k miles its normal for coolant parts to begin to leak and need replacement.
All these cars on the road need to get fixed, thank you for your service as a Technician.
Any BMW, any questions, please comment. On any video. Have 15+ years, BMW and ASE master.
I think my radiator hose is leaking because I can see blue and white corrosion on the tube leading to it and it smells like it’s burning
How much does it cost to replace the radiator?
@@CarlJohnson-kz5zpmy warranty covered the top hoses that were leaking no need to replace my radiator.
@@trishonya so is the radiator the called the secondary radiator? What is the secondary radiator that I need to replace for my A/C to properly work? If someone can explain.
Hey buddy I have few questions
1) I have leak from the same spot and I wanna ask it possible to fill that crack JB Weld? It’s available on amazon it was recommended by mechanic to patch crack on radiators
2) I went to dealership and I was told water pump is needed to be replaced too. However he wasn’t very clear about it.. He didn’t mentioned he saw it leaking instead he said there were signs of coolant flung around… white marks probably coolant. However I never noticed any leak in my 2 month of ownership (im second owner) and I would be surprised if both leaks happened the same moment. I just scrapped the car from bottom while leaving plaza. And I assume it caused the stress on radiator or just time itself cracked it. So the main question is… the second tank the little one beside radiator coolant tank is it for water pump?? I opened it and the coolant was on max level.
3) I noticed you topped up your second tank… do I have to do the same?? My AC works fine and the level of second tank is perfect
And it’s 2019 530 xdrive 2.0L model
Hello, JB weld would be possible but I would not recommend it. The radiator if already cracked/leaking has the chance to leak again in a different spot. All plastic on radiator has gone through the same miles of driving. If the radiator doesn’t get replaced there is that chance vehicle will get a random coolant leak and possible leave you stranded.
With radiator leaking up front the coolant will get splashed onto the front of the engine where the water pump is located. The engine fan and driving could cause the coolant to go everywhere in engine bay. Its very possible radiator is the only leak. If there is a lot of the white coolant build up, on the bottom of the pump, then the pump can also be leaking. I would recommend doing the radiator to start and then see if the leak remains.
The small tank coolant is used for the charge air cooler and the coolant/refrigerant heat exchanger (A/C). When replacing the radiator, you have to remove the main radiator with the aux radiator together and then replace radiator separately once both are outside. This is only reason I had to top off both tanks because I removed both radiators. If main radiator or engine water pump is leaking, only the bigger expansion tank has to get topped off.
Thank you for the comment.
How do you remove the coolant pump off the old radiator (right above the radiator hose) . I released the strap but can’t understand how to get it out . Thanks !
The pump should come off after releasing the strap. It might get stuck and be hard to remove just because of time, but there is nothing else holding pump on. To transfer the Aux pump bracket from old radiator there are taps you have to release to get bracket out.
Hope this is helpful.
Cuz of this plastic couplings you need to replace whole cooler. That's the problem with bmws. I have similar problem, but with coolant reservoar. Thought it was o-ring in the tube, but apparently the plastic part shrunk causing it to leak. Cheap solution would be just to fix it with silicone glue.
DO NOT make the same mistake I did and buy a cheap aftermarket radiator for this repair. I will now have to do this job over again with OEM parts as the cheap stuff found online will leak 😅
Which one did you buy that was bad? I was looking at Nissan one
Changing out the radiator on my 2018 m550i tmrw…only question is about the ac condenser that appears to be attached to the radiator when you removed it as one? Is there an air evacuation step I need to take? And a recharge maybe? Or am I overthinking?
Yes, for your m550i model evacuating and recharging the a/c is needed when replacing the coolant radiator.
On the 530i model the a/c does not need to get evacuated, the condenser on this one is coolant cooled and uses a smaller heat exchanger that does not block the radiator from coming out. I pulled out the high temperature and low temperature coolant radiators at the same time.
I searched for 2018 m550i and for that one it does show the a/c condenser is a normal air-cooled condenser, in the front, and system does have to get evacuated when replacing the coolant radiator. Evacuating the a/c is a listed previous step before removing radiator. Then shows, “Feed the radiator with the air conditioning condenser out through the top and remove it with the help from a second person."
Hope this is helpful.
@@thatonebmwguy9925very helpful, thank you for your time, acknowledgment and information. I performed this on my own following practically all of your steps and the added step for my condenser and had no issues at all! Quoted at $1100 for labor without parts and this only took me maybe 2 hours.
@@thatonebmwguy9925is the 540i job the same as the 530i?
@geedunk13 Yes, job should be very similar to this one. The a/c does not have to get evacuated for the 540i.
Thanks for the reply! New question. My car used the old radiator(997) which only has one bottom hose hole at the left side. And bmw has stopped that part and the new part(010) is just what you ordered in the video. I also ordered this updated parts. But what should i do about the redundant upwards leaning hole that on the right side of the bottom radiator? Do i just leave it like that or should i block it. Thanks bro!
I see what you mean, new radiator does have that extra connection on lower corner. At the 5:57 mark, the only one without a yellow cap, I think but not 100% sure, is not an actual coolant connection. The connection is there but there is no pass through for coolant.
@@thatonebmwguy9925 thank you! u r right actually. i have successfully replace the part without any problem.
Congrats on job done and thank you for follow up!
Has to be a BMW flaw. Exact same spot on my 540i
Same here man on my 330i f34
Oh man thanks for this wonderful video.
Mine is leaking from the exact sopt.
The car has only 35k miles on it . This is stupid. this should be a recall or class action lawsuit.
Just one question. You didn't have to add coolent. How the air bleeding works on this.!?
!!Do not open cooling system if vehicle was just driven or if engine is hot. Wait until engine is cold before opening cooling system caps!!
Start bleeding procedure with diagnostic mode (hit start/stop button 3 times fast without pressing brake pedal), turn both side temperature dials to max heat, use blower on lowest air setting and last hold the accelerator down for 10 seconds.
The smaller expansion tank (low temp cooling) should start running the electic coolant pump and begin to bleed, showing bubbles or flow in the small expansion tank. I recommend doing ths first and then topping off if any more coolant is needed. Tighten small expansion tank cap.
For the big expansion tank (high temp cooling), the vehicles engine has to get started to run the mechanical water pump driven from the engine belt. With the car cold, you can start the engine and let it run for a couple minutes at idle with the expansion tank cap off (You can place cap on the tank, but not twisted on, to help avoid coolant splashing out).
After a couple minutes, or if engine temperature level gets to the middle in cluster, shut engine off and and add more coolant to expansion tank if needed. Tighten big expansion tank cap.
!While the engine is on, keep an eye on temperature gauge in the cluster to make sure the vehicle does not overheat. If temperature guage starts to rise, past the middle, shut the engine off and recheck coolant level!
Hope this is helpful.
@@thatonebmwguy9925 Its done.
It worked thank you very much.
Eventho mine is 540i, but it was the same thing.
God know how long this new one will last.
The 6 cylinder was a little harder of a job i had to use some one else help holding the radiator for me.
I opened up my car and found out there was one hose at bottom on intercooler on left side. My hand won’t reach that hose from bottom nore side and even removing the bumper didn’t worked
Now the bumper ain’t aligned and hood won’t close properly 💀 I think I will have to get it towed
Great video. Why my comment keep getting deleted😢i’m just asking there are 3 different parts number for my 2017 530i radiator? Whats the difference among them
Another quick question. My coolant is like splashing all over to these hoses that connected my radiator also. But the technician only suggested changing the radiator itself. But not the hoses. Is this correct? I wish i can post a photo here. My engine bay looks really bad😅
What are the part numbers? Try Realoem.com and you can use the Vin for parts lookup. The 3 different radiators are most likely for the different models for G30, 530i, 530e, 540i and M550i. The part numbers might also be the same radiator simply different versions of the part (newer parts released get a new/updated part number at times).
You can also call BMW dealer parts department to confirm the part number and can also get a price quote at same time. Some parts are not too much more, and dealer will have them in stock for same day pickup.
Hope this is helpful.
This question depends, for vehicle reliability and since coolant hoses are already getting disconnected for the radiator replacement. Replacing the hoses is not too much more labor and will prevent car from possibly getting stranded in future from that coolant hose leak. This is best. (If hoses have not already been replaced)
When removing the coolant hoses, some force is needed, so its also possible hoses might not leak until after reinstalling everything.
For less expensive way, but more of a hassle, replacing the coolant hoses/parts one at a time as they begin to leak is also an option. Doing this way, a coolant pressure test should be done to confirm cooling system has no active leaks and is holding at the same pressure/psi for at least 15-20 min.
If a coolant hose has any of the white coolant build up where the plastic and rubber parts meet, coolant hose should be replaced. If when removing hose, inside of hose plastic is separated or seal is not secured, hose should be replaced.
Hope this is helpful.
@@thatonebmwguy9925 thanks a lot!!! I ordered the same parts that u used in the video after checking realoem website.
what about the AC freon...
For the 530i the a/c does not have to get evacuated. The A/c has a coolant cooled condenser, and does not get in the way when removing the radiator.
Can I use a 2017 540 xdrive radiator on my 2018 xdrive ? Please help feedback is appreciated.
I do not believe the radiator will work for the 2018 Xdrive. The radiator on a 2017 540i xdrive is a different part number than a 2018 540i xdrive. I’m not sure what exact difference is but because the part numbers are different, the routing/coolant lines might be slighting different.
Great Video. Do you lift both wheels or just the passenger side?
I lift both front wheels using two jacks, one on each side. With jacks holding up the vehicle I also always use at least one jack stand underneath as safety (two jack stands is always better/safer if mounting points are available).
Ok thanks for the reply!! One last question. If I’m utilizing the plastic jack posts for the jacks, where do I put the jack stand?
Anywhere on the front subframe, with flat surface is ok. I will place them on edges near the lower control arm bolts (subframe side), or in middle sometimes near the oil pan (not on the oil pan!).
I do not lower the car onto the jack stands at any point, I keep the car up with both jacks and raise the jack stands to highest point possible closest to frame.
Hope this is helpful.
I’m installing my new radiator with the same part number but I noticed there is an extra hose attachment on the passenger side. Do I leave it open?
As long as it is not a pass through for coolant it is ok to leave open. In video mark 5:56 the bottom right, there is an extra atachment but it is not open for coolant to pass through. Comparing that one to the same attachment on the left side, the left attachment has a different circle outlet with space for coolant hose snap ring to secure to.
Hope this is helpful.
Great video. What is the part #?
17 11 8 476 010.
@@thatonebmwguy9925hi i saw other 2 parts number ending 663/664 whats the difference among all 3 of them?
I can’t believe you filled it up with the hose
Will use distilled water next time.
Important question 🙋♂️
Right at 6:06 minutes where your right hand is holding the radiator from, that hole has no hose connected on my 2019 530i am I missing it and if so can you please tell me what that hose is? I’ve seen the diagram and shows nothing there on the BMW Site which is confusing because at 6:42 in the video you connect a hose on that exact hole, 3rd one on the right side of the radiator under the big hose hole please any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
For this vehicle its a hose that connects the main coolant radiator to a seperate/side external radiator on the right front lower side. The hose is part number 17 12 8 602 633. In the BMW diagram its not part of the main coolant system diagram, there is a seperate one with only 2 coolant hoses and a bracket.

So replacing a fan on a 18' M550I is easy? It looks like the fan just slides right out with no effort
M550i is the same as this model to remove metal cross connection/plate. Then should be; unlock connector and detach, Loosen screws 2x, Release coolant hose from fan cowl, Feed out fan cowl upwards and remove.
How do you transfer the plastic piece that holds the secondary water pump from the old radiator to the new one , I can’t seem to get it off
There are two tabs that hold bracket in place. I believe you release tabs and rotate bracket, then slide out. Part number is 17118632136.
Is that the secondary radiator for the AC? My secondary radiator is leaking and according to the dealership that's why my AC is not working.
Yes, the other radiator is for the Coolant-cooled air conditioning condenser and for the Charge air cooler. If that cooling system has low or no coolant, a/c will not work correctly and possible a check engine light might also come on.
Maaaan 5min in and im like thank god I found this I was thinking I was going to have remove front bumper and all on 2018 640GT. 😅all i was worried about

More repairs coming soon.
I'm following along with this video on my own car, but how in the heck do you get to that bottom hose on the passenger side? --I'm stuck and it's the only thing left before I can take the radiator out.
That hose was the hardest to get off. I used a long 18” right angle pick (to move back the spring clap) and a long 19” panel popper to push the hose off.
To get hose on I used the panel popper to align the hose and then gently pried on the hose to get the spring clamp to engage.
Hope this is helpful.
@@thatonebmwguy9925 Thank you so much for this excellent video! --After much determination and managing it get my fingertips in there, was able to successfully remove and reinstall the hell-hose. Wasn't sure if I was doing the water-pump part right because I only heard the small reservoir gurgling, but ran the engine for a while and not a drop.
Appreciate the feedback. Thank you!
On this vehicle only the smaller reservoir will bubble using bleeding procedure (low temp cooling system has a electric coolant pump) and the main reservoir/high temp cooling system will bubble only with engine on (mechanical coolant pump ran by the drive belt).
On the bmw 540 B58 do you have to evacuate the ac in order to do the radiator replacement?
540i B58 should not need to evacuate A/C.
If the condenser/heat exchanger is coolant cooled, not air cooled (like the older vehicles) evacuating a/c is not required. The heat exchanger should allow for fan and radiator to get removed with enough clearance.
The G30 with B48 and B58, A/C has the coolant cooled heat exchangers. G30 M550i model has, older style, air cooled condenser in the front of radiator. This one does need to have A/C evacuated.
Hope this is helpful.
By chance do you have any suggestions where to get a oem one?
www.bmwpartsnow.com had it in stock at the time i needed, all other places radiator was not available/sold out. www.ecstuning.com is also a great site for BMW parts.
How are you removing the bottom piece that has the two pieces sticking in the bottom of the radiator?
It has plastic holding tabs on the left and right edges. I used a scrapping tool but a screwdriver in between should also work. Just have to separate the pieces enough and pull down the panel. (The metal screws do not hold on that trim, screws only secure the radiator to support).
Hope this helps.

Do I have to unplug the battery before doing this?
No, disconnecting the battery is not noted in the repair instructions for this job.
I recommend closing doors and waiting for the car to power down (start/stop button light goes out) before starting the work. Also do not open the doors with engine sensors or components disconnected, it is possible a fault code will get stored for the disconnected items.
hello dear friend at the moment I am driving a f11 bmw 530d with the n57d30 engine with 258ps I had a problem with the car like in a cold start I hear from the driver side bubbling like there are air in the coolant system and the car get hot when I accelerate over 120kmh I have changed the waterpump thermostat und bleed the coolant over 5 times but the car keep on losing coolant water and I can’t determine where the leaking at also I’ve changed the agr coolant I am stuck with the radiator I am not sure if it is broke and also don’t know what to do next, I brought the car to a workshop and I felt like he want to scam me because he mentions that the head is broken und he will repair it and it would take like a day the thing is I know that he’s a scammer and I had giving him a chance but he still remain the same didn’t change
Hello. When bleeding coolant system try to switch between max cold for a few minutes and max heat for a few minutes, two or three times. Lifting the front of the car with a jack can also help get any air out of coolant system.
The engine I believe has an engine oil/coolant heat exchanger and also a transmission oil/coolant heat exchanger. You can check both engine oil and transmission oil for contamination. If something is found cooler is internally leaking.
Last, is possible the heater core inside the cabin is leaking and the coolant is dripping onto the underside of car through the A/C water drain. There might be coolant stains where vehicle is parked.
Hope this is helpful. If you find cause of the coolant loss please update comment.
Thank you!
@@thatonebmwguy9925 thank you my friend for the useful information I will check the steps up and tell you if I found the issue
Dealer asking to replace a small hose that I see in your video for $1K. how much all this cost you to do?
For this job dealer was asking over 2K. Total for radiator and coolant was about $810.
Great video thx!!!
Could you please explain what you did at 14:04 on the video? Was that a way to circulate the system?
Yes, this is how you can start the coolant bleeding procedure for the electric coolant pumps installed. This also activates the electric thermostat and opens a shut-off valve to the heater core to allow the coolant to circulate through the heater core and remove any air pockets. The low temperature AUX coolant pump (electric) will activate along with the high temperature turbo charger coolant pump (electric). This helps get most of the air from both systems, but starting the car is still needed to finish bleeding the high temperature cooling system. The main engine coolant pump is a mechanical belt driven pump.
Start bleeding procedure with diagnostic mode (hit start/stop button 3 times fast without pressing brake pedal), turn both side temperature dials to max heat, use blower on lowest air setting and last hold the accelerator down for 10 seconds
Hope this is helpful.
Can you tell me what exactly did you do at 4:12? I broke that clip on both sides....
Using the panel popper tool, just wedged it between the unlock tab and flat part of the radiator. The panel popper tool has a flatter end/tip compared to a flat head screwdriver. The tab/plastic is not a thick plastic and time and mileage on car will also cause plastic to break easier after time. 7:24 shows install when tabs engage.
Hope this is helpful.
Thanks
You are awesome 😎
Same spot on my 540 all these mechanics try scamming on told me upper radiator hose and needs to. Take out manifold to replace I was like fuck that shit brought to another mecanic they told me radiator and was told they need to take the whole front end off thanks for this video now I’m going to do everything my self can’t with these people and it’s because I’m 18 and drive this car they all think they can take my money
My small expansion tank is leaking but the main big one isn’t ? Any suggestions
!!Do not open cooling system if vehicle was just driven or if engine is hot. Wait until engine is cold before opening cooling system caps!!
The small expansion tank is only used for the Air to Water intercooler cooling (on this model/engine). I recommend starting the coolant bleeding procedure just to make sure the low temp cooling pump is turning on. You should see water flow or bubbles in the small expansion tank. Start bleeding procedure with diagnostic mode (hit start/stop button 3 times fast without pressing brake pedal), turn both side temperature dials to max heat, use blower on lowest air setting and last hold the accelerator down for 10 seconds.
If the pump is running, cooling system is ok, and replacing the small expansion tank is the only fix.
If the pump is NOT running, coolant will not circulate to the front (low temp) radiator and could cause same issues even if expansion tank gets replaced.
Its normal for the expansion tank and other coolant hoses to require replaced from about 80-100k miles.
The high temperature cooling system is a completley seperate system and is used to cool the engine, turbocharger, oil filter housing, transmission cooler and to heat the cabin.
Hope this is helpful.
Sounds like the water pump went out on the car too 😢
This car water pumps are good. The big expansion tank does not bubble when doing the bleeding procedure.
Same here. Try finding a radiator!
