I once visited one of those truck trials and was invited to ride in one of those 8x8 Tatras with a crew cabin. Not in a competition section but while moving the truck from one end of the area to another. And the driver DID NOT use the roads but used shortcuts over hills and so on. Just to show of. My conclusion: that thing didn't have nearly enough grabbing handles in the cabin!!!

I love how all the trucks, apart from the Mercedes, were from Tatra, I was recently at a similar event here in the Czech Republic and seeing it live is an incredible experience.

The Army Did have Unimogs at one stage (FAIL) the much older 6x6 Dodge Power Wagons were just out lasting them. Still have some unimogs, but the Army can't sell them till the speedo reads 100,000km
When you were saying don't tip to the guy that rolled over, he was trying to go through a gate.. The sicks you see them running over are gates that they have to try and go through.. They don't really care if they roll like you saw. Just get through that gate

Tatra allows such big wheel travel, because of czechoslovak invention of suspension known as Tatra conception which is rigid tubular frame mounted with independently moving (swinging) half axles. It's modular basically from 4x4 up to 12x12 and theoretically more. Also older Tatras are famous for engine whine, which is not turbo as many people think, but it's actually huge fan and belt creating the sound, because older Tatras are simple air cooled engines.
In 2013 actually the Green Monster Team did some help with their trucks in a flooded area in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany: ruclips.net/video/gDlaKhyPQCs/видео.html Finally the cattle had been rescued with the help of the German Army by using their amphibious tank "Fuchs" which is equipped with a propeller. The tank pulled the cattle trailer forth and back to a higher elevated meadow. This tank is also bought by the US Army btw.
I was on similar event in Milovice town, Czech republic. There was modified truck with bus cabin on the back. They strapped you in and it was like roller coaster on wheels in the mud. It was fun.
I also watched it there. I even visited one event near my hometown. Really impressive. The video showed more the action scenes. I found it most interesting when they circled the trucks around the gates at very low speed and much control.

Truck trials are so underrated even in Central Europe, their home area. Some French game dev studio was working on a truck trial game based on the Europa Championship, but apparently they got in development hell and their license expired, which is a shame.
These event are actually competitions. These trucks must go a given route thru the terrain. The small wooden stick you can see near the trucks they are markings for the route. There are are also referee they look if the trucks touch these sticks and then give points. Every time they have to back off a little they also lose points.
Tatras are nuts, 4x4, 6x6, 8x8, and 10x10 and with fully independent suspension. Just wish I could get one here. Bet I could make buckets of money contracting to logging and oilfield companies
I spent a year in military and drove quite a few different trucks but 8X8 were by far the most fun. They just dont care unless you are in some horrible situation. But granted, they are expensive and we never got to abuse them like the regular 4X4 trucks.

These are Europa truck trials. in Eastern Europe they have a small competition Extreme truck trials. Even more impressive. You should note the rules. They have to navigate between wooden poles, not hitting it. Not reversing, and so on. It is not just driving in the mud. Been to some events, very cool. You may do a video on ETRC. Like Zolder 2013 😁

i used to play a game called 1nsane back in the day. old game. mid 2000's on pc. racing game in cars and trucks (some trucks like these) i always thought the big trucks were cool. sadly they were a bit slow lol.
If I recall, that was the first off-roading game and you could deploy a winch to help you out. I played it too, there was free play, but also these style courses complete with sticks to form the gates you had to pass through.

We used those old 8x8 Tatras in the Army to pull T-55 soviet tanks out of the mud.

Tatra's are in a league of their own, fully independent suspension on all axels and alot of them have air cooled v12's

Tatra doesnt have axles, it has half axles. Each wheel can rise and fall individualy.
