Ik right? This is an amazing channel, do you know of any channels that are like this?? I’ve seemed to watched this channel out and I’m looking for something similar
I’d love to see more videos about screenwriters. Like Andrew Kevin Walker who wrote Se7en, he’s one of my favourites. But his dark material is almost always watered down.
Spider-Man 1 is the best Spider-Man movie. The reason is because of David Koepp. His script is so efficient and well structured that it allows us to have fun and enjoy the film, unlike pompous Spider-Man 2 and convoluted Spider-Man 3. They should have brought David Koepp back to do all 3. Huge mistake in my opinion.
Love how this video doesn’t talk about all the other crappy scripts That Koepp wrote and is responsible for; like The Lost World Jurassic Park, The Mummy, and that Jack Ryan reboot
Koepp is great at structure and themes, making him the perfect go-to blockbuster screenwriter, you're absolutely right about that... but he's occasionally terrible at dialogue, and that's why I personally still take issue with him. Specifically, a lot of his scripts just have really dumb one liners or jokes that seem completely out of step with the characters' personalities and the situation at hand. Best example I always come back to is the otherwise-great trailer sequence in The Lost World: Jurassic Park. It's a great setpiece, tense, well-staged, classic Spielberg at its finest, and it's the first moment that the characters truly find themselves in mortal peril, kicking off the back half of chases, near-misses, and, uh, screaming. But in the middle of all this ratcheting up tension and stakes and fear... Koepp throws in this bit where the three characters dangling off a ledge respond to their savior asking how he can help by saying "Yeah, I'll get a large fries" "And a rootbeer" "And a cheeseburger!" It's dumb, it's not funny, it doesn't fit any of the characters' personalities to be quipping like that while trying not to fall off a cliff - certainly doesn't make sense for ALL THREE OF THEM to joke like a rehearsed comedy routine - and it just destroys all of the tension that the scene had built up to that point. The same thing happens throughout the first Spider-Man movie, but at least there it's forgivable because Spider-Man is SUPPOSED to be quippy... I just wish the quips were better than "It's you who's out Gobby! Out of your mind!" I feel like the perfect Koepp script would be one in collaboration with another writer who's great at dialogue but less good with structure. It'd never happen, but Tarantino might be a match in heaven. Or Joss Whedon (even though I think Whedon is better at structure and plot than he's sometimes given credit for).
If there's only one person you could blame for why Crystal Skull ended up bad, it's George Lucas. Nearly all of his genuinely good/great movies are what they are thanks to all the talented people he hires and the excessive amount of editing that's often done. The game himself is full of dumb ideas and doesn't handle criticism well.
Koepp sucks. His forced family-drama-puke stories ruin the film. War of the Worlds: soap opera family drama with a deadbeat crappy dad and bratty kids. Jurassic Park: soap opera couple crap plus horrible dumb kids. Spider-Man: grotesquely cringey dialog, drama with Harry, terrible Dunst scenes with blubberface Toby. Ugh and that horrible wrestling scene where Spidey suddenly has no spider-sense. Ugh. Koepp, i will never forgive. He takes great stories, adds his angsty crap, and destroys the screen potential of amazing source material. Away with him.
I discovered your channel and went on a binge.
I Loved all your videos! The content and themes are amazing, keep it up, you won a fan.

Surprised more aren’t flooding the comments after the latest video! Forgot how much you’ve honed your style. Still a GREAT one.
Nice vid. David Koepp is the absolute man. What a career.

Great job! Informative and concise.
honestly man you should reach out too film theory or wisecrack or something, your stuff would do well in a place like that.
Two Towers and Road to Perdition are also 2002's Best Directed along with Minority Report
David Koepp should write a Video Game movie.
new fan of your channel
Efficiency and Structure...something The Last Jedi had none of.
Shut up
Carlito s Way is his masterpiece.

Don't see how or why Spider-Man 2 is pompous, it was deeper and a lot more daring while still also a lot of fun.

The Lost World Jurassic Park is far from a well written movie Dude...
I believe Koepp did not script The Da Vinci Code just the sequels.
Accurate
You sound like Spider-Man!
Damn, so my teachers brother scripted spider man?
Didn't he also direct Premium Rush?

This is something I never hear
criticizing over his writing
It's refreshing to hear different perspectives and opinions
