Sailing alone to remote islands and taking my kayak for a spin - UNTIE THE LINES S4E05

  • A leaky fuel tank is not stopping my sailboat Karl and me from exploring our surroundings. I lift up the anchor and sail away by myself, leaving Boca Chica behind and heading east, topping along the coast and at some pretty little remote islands on the way. The first stop is Isla Secas.
    The island is super pretty and it's time to try out my new kayak for real and circumnavigate Isla Secas with my kayak. And look who made it to the anchorage as well: Gypsea Jim!
    Ahoy, Nike & Karl

    Niki, so glad you are back for a new season.
    Diesel engines do not use all the fuel pumped to the injectors. What they do not use is returned to the fuel tank. If you are not collecting the returned diesel, it is being sent to the boat's defective main fuel tank. Perhaps you could send the return diesel to a container to be captured and then poured into your fresh cans so you can get 100% use of your fuel.

    Brilliant that you have a new kayak, it looks great and wishing you a wonderful time on the water. The trip around the Isla Secas seemed pretty idyllic at least compared to a kayak around Ireland's Eye, ........... especially on an out going tide with an easterly wind . . . yikes , my heart has been in mouth, more than once !! It is a very beautiful anchorage and you can easily stay there for a week and not run out of things to do. Snorkling is really good and if you are lucky you see turtles and whales cruising by. And the anchorage in the north east of the island is even rather protected and the holding is quite good.

    • @WhiteSpotPirates
      @WhiteSpotPirates  6 лет назад +3

      spencer marshall I just fixed it yesterday 🤣. We had tried to weld it but the metal would not take it. I talked to the lab of PettitPaint and after their green light I used Splash Zone to fix the holes. The tank is full of water now and so far it’s holding. Will do a little 40nm run to see if it’s still holding the water and then fill up with diesel 🤞

    • @melee401
      @melee401 6 лет назад +1

      @@WhiteSpotPirates All right! I had the feeling it was going to come down to something aside from welding. There are lot of issues in play with welding that sort thing and doing so can turn into a great chase because the thermal loading on those old the welds can incite more issues. Just keep a few jerry with you in the event of further problems. But then, most do that anyway regardless. And of course you will be keeping some more Splash Zone aboard too. I would probably keep a few empty jerry cans in the engine compartment too to fill in case of another leak. Between those 4 you should get 40+ hours of motoring in should another problem arise. Hopefully this will be the end of it. It not then another probably plastic replacement tank might end up being the order of the day.
      You can get fuel tanks professionally coated, but that would probably be as much if not more than a replacement tank of plastic.

    • @kevincostner9734
      @kevincostner9734 6 лет назад

      Is this splash zone supposed to just get you to a better place for building a new tank??

    • @melee401
      @melee401 6 лет назад

      @@kevincostner9734 I would think that would depend on how it goes from here. Aluminum does well until it is trapped without oxygen just does 316l stainless. Here she had corrosion open a weld in the bottom of the tank. Generally this happens in the very bottom where the condensation lies around and the sea snot with it. If you get one leak you are most likely on your way to seeing others in the near vicinity in the not too distant future. If she ran fillets on the bottom inside corner welds coming up an inch or two and ran a bead over any flat welds at the bottom of the tank she could see 20 years or more go by without any further issues. If she is still chasing down leaks after that is done I think it would be time to start sizing up for new tank that can fit into the existing one. I am not sure if the tank is aluminum or steel but the hull is aluminum so my guess is that the tank is too. I would apply the same methodology to the tank regardless of it being aluminum or steel myself.

    • @kevincostner9734
      @kevincostner9734 6 лет назад

      @@melee401 its a old boat. A new tank is the only way to go from here. Patches are just bandaids. Crossing oceans will see right through any weak link.

  • @tedrenard472
    @tedrenard472 6 лет назад +2

    Hi Nike. Just a note on diesels. By not running your engine near it's optimum rev range (somewhere around 2200 - 2500rpm for your engine, I believe) you're carrying out a process called glazing the bores. Maria may know about it, so worth getting her opinion too, but what happens is that the engine isn't being worked hard enough to fully burn and exhaust the soot and byproducts created by fuel combustion, and these byproducts then flash-burn onto the cylinder bores, creating a hard, enamel like coating which leads to inefficient combustion, which exacerbates into a vicious cycle of degrading performance which can eventually lead to the engine becoming unusable. There's a better explanation here : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diesel_engine_problems . Don't be mislead by the references to generators, this applies to all diesel engines. Diesel engines actually last longer if they're used a bit harder. Hope the tank repair is holding up. Lovely to see you back out on the water and getting around.

    • @WhiteSpotPirates
      @WhiteSpotPirates  6 лет назад +1

      ted renard hey Ted, yes, I have heard of this and from what I heard it’s worse for Turbos. It’s always a problem with cruising engines because u don’t usually run them that hard. When I have my tank, I do sometimes run it on higher rpms. But mostly between 1500 and 2000 I would say. But every once in a while I do throttle up a bit. Right now I run from jerry cans and my goal is to use as little fuel as possible, that’s why I am running such low rpms.
      Thank you for the suggestion, though!

    Just curious but how do you get out and back into your kayak to snorkel? I love your channel, because everything is so basic. Your videography is great and Karl is wonderful.

      Mike Mayfield I just jump out and then back in. You just have to make sure you don’t tip it over... and I am sure it does not look too elegant 🤣
      I am happy to hear you enjoy the “basic” stuff. In comparison to season 1 and 2 I feel that I am living like a queen 🤣. But I know that there is plenty of room upwards considering comfort. If you don’t have much, there is less to lose and less to repair 🤣🤣🤣🤓

      Wake for Me yeah you could...but there are ribs inside it so I would lose a lot of volume. I just splash zoned it and testing it with water right now. Seems to be holding so far...🤞

    Great video and it looks like a great place to be! How is the charts over there? Are they accurate or do you always sail "careful"?

    • @WhiteSpotPirates
      @WhiteSpotPirates  6 лет назад

      Pb Nn i use navionics and the c-map charts and between the two you can navigate fairly safely. Obviously always do eyeball navigation as well. And those spots that are marked 1-3 meters at low tide...those you want to be extra careful and maybe take a look at low tide first before you head over. But apart from that it’s pretty good 👍

    • @pbnn735
      @pbnn735 6 лет назад

      @@WhiteSpotPirates That's nice, is it lots of reefs between the islands or is it "easy" to navigate with deep water and nothing to be worried about? Do you do some fishing or is your main foodsource from the shops? It looks so nice with the weather and blue water, here in Sweden its late autumn and I just took my boat up on land for the winter.... :-(
      So it puts a smile on my face to see you have a good time! Thanks for the videos!! /Peter

    • @WhiteSpotPirates
      @WhiteSpotPirates  6 лет назад +1

      Pb Nn it’s Deep between the Islands. And sometimes it’s a bit rocky to go in and out of a bay, but most of it is fairly smooth. Not so much coral reefs here but more rocks. It’s more the logs that you have to watch out for in between 😅.

      trying to be happy and to go with the flow. Usually it's Karl who decides on our destination and how I get to spend my time anyhow. So it's best to quit plans and take what life has to offer. But if you are wondering if I will ever leave Panama...yes, it's not that I don't want to...let's say I am constantly working on it.
      At the time of the video I was headed towards San Carlos, Vista Mar Marina to have Maria try and weld my fuel tank shut. And that's about all that I am going to say for now. You will have to keep on watching to find out what happens next ;)
      Ahoy, Nike & Karl

      Why does she need to seize the day to leave today. She is very young still. 4 years in panama has brought her very far and she has not just sat in panama.. The world is not that big. You can go really hard and sail around it in a year. Or you can take youre time and do so in 10 years. Or take a life time. 30 years now and i am just half way round. To each there own.
