As someone who can’t afford to enter fansign events, let alone travel that far for them, I’ve recently bought a few signed things bc they are special to me in a way. All my signed items have come from official company stores or Mnet ! I have a signed SEVENTEEN album and there’s even marker stains on the back from them being signed and stacked, so I take it that the one I have is real. Along with that I have a signed Ten SuperM poster from the official SM online shop. I also have another signed poster on its way from SM and a signed TOO album from Mnet. I never buy signed items unless it’s coming from an official source of some kind. One day I would love to get something signed in person but as of now that’s not an option for me.

I think this is video is a bit poorly thought out.
Instead of discouraging someone who may be a new collector, perhaps address the difficulties in getting signed items and things to consider if you do want to buy one. Allow someone to determine for themselves whether it is worth it or not.
While legitimacy is always a concern, it is completely possible to learn to determine authenticity. I will mention albums specifically because that's what i have the most experience with. If you just spend some time to learn the member's signatures, and do some research into the company, group, and specific eras where they are particularly busy, you will have a good indication of whether an album was signed by the members. There are plenty of fans who have studied the signatures of an artist or group over time, and it is completely possible to tell if an item is signed when a member is tired versus signed by a manager. The more you look at each signature, the more obvious it becomes. Of course, not everyone you could show a signature to is to be trusted in determining legitimacy. They should be able to pull up reference photographs and compare the signs, and explain their reasoning behind whether an album is legitimate or not.
Additionally, there are plenty of opportunities to buy albums sold by mwave or posters directly from the company. These are authentic. Soompi albums are not sold any more, but they're also a legit source.
Not everyone can go to a fansign, and not everyone wants to. Some people are totally fine with just owning something that their favorite artist has signed.
I encourage anyone who wants to buy signed merch or start collecting in general, it is just another way to show support for your group. My collection is almost exclusively signed albums and I enjoy each one of them :)

Yes! Honestly some fans also can’t afford to buy however amount of albums that are necessary for the fansign. As of now, there’s video calls, but that can really become expensive near $500+ for an all member video fansign call or individual specific members. Signed albums are much cheaper and are definitely meaningful even if the collector didnt get a face to face interaction. 💖

such a great video~ glad you brought up fansigns at the end since there was a major issue in the atiny fandom (idk if it still goes on but it happens probably in all fandoms) when fans buy fan slots to have their album page signed and post it note question answered and the amount of fake slots and scammers was just nauseating. hence i urge anyone contemplating fan slots to be careful (make sure the person can even provide video proof they sat with each member and if they’ve had experience doing slots before) or just don’t support fan slots entirely because it’s gotten out of hand and i’ve had so many friends be scammed out of so much money (depending on the group fan slots can be close to $300).

Most of the time when I see someone selling a signed album, I'm suspicious as well, even when I see them in an official store like Tower Records who do genuinely get stuff signed and would probably ruin their reputation by forging. I did however buy a concert ticket + signed album bundle 'cause I don't think companies would watch event managements selling forged stuff from artists in combination with official tickets

As for rather attending fan signs yourself than having friends or sellers attending in your place, yes it's a lot better to be able to go yourself, but I think it's a good alternative 'cause you still get to ask your questions or convey a message to them. It does depend on the price though if it's worth it. Friends usually don't ask for more then what they have to spend on album, packaging and shipping. Just my thoughts on that matter ^^

Like for instance I bought the signed copies of NU’EST’s “The Table” albums that were signed by one random member. So I got JR’s signature. I also bought a signed VAV album once, before I had the chance to meet them. But the signed sales were promoted by the group themselves. Are those always legit? I know that’s getting into a tougher topic! Lol That said, I’d never just buy a signed album off eBay or Mercari, etc... 🤪

While it is very common to see fake signed merch, there are plenty of ways to get trustworthy signed merch that don't involve going to korea and applying for a fansign. I can't stress enough just how expensive it is to fly to korea, buy at least dozens (if not hundreds or thousands) of albums, just for the chance to get into a fansign. Most people don't have that kind of money to spend.
If anyone's interested, some alternatives are:
    •joining a fansign group order
This is where a group order manager will split the cost of applying to a fansign into slots equal to the number of members so it's less expensive per person. For example I bought a chuu fansign slot that's personally signed to me for around ~100 cad. This option is more expensive than some others but WAY less expensive than if I were to apply for a fansign all by myself
    •buying an album off mnet
Sometimes groups will offer signed albums off mnet. These are legitimately signed and usually aren't too much more expensive than a normal album
•buying promos from certain ebay sellers
For this, there's a lot more research you have to do but you can definitely get legitimately signed albums off ebay. Promo copies are albums given to people in the industry and are usually signed. Whether or not it's legitimately signed depends on the group. For example, mamamoo RARELY sign their albums in recent years (most are manager signed), whereas most nugu groups will. Do your research for this one. A great seller for signed albums is grapemusiccd, but there are a few others as well
Some more expensive but alternative options:
    •applying for an online fansign
This will likely cost as much as applying for an in person fansign (sometimes maybe more) but at least you don't have to fly to korea
    •polaroids
These are very expensive, but depending on the group could be less than a fansign. Polaroids are usually signed
Other ways to get signed stuff include contests, merch at concerts, etc
    What to avoid:
Photocards are rarely signed. There are exceptions but do your research.
Random pictures are just about never signed.
    Posters are rarely signed.
Signed albums that aren't a promo copy, from mnet, or a fansign are VERY rare.
tldr; you should do your research if you're looking to get signed stuff but to imply that you shouldn't get signed merch unless you go to a fansign and see it signed in front of you is just ridiculous imo. I hope this helps someone!

I've found most 'signed' Mamamoo albums on ebay are not signed by the members or their managers/staff, the members signatures are pre-stamped or pre-printed onto the album.

I think people look for signed albums online because they aren’t able to experience the interaction with their idol and get a signed album. I know I can’t. But even tho is looks real you shouldn’t waist your money. Like there are people selling signed albums for over 200$ and it might even be fake. Never take the chance.

@@KenjiKumagai for MWAVE albums they're always signed by the artist. If they weren't they would be able to ship so much faster. Also you can always compare them with signatures that they gift their staff like their dance teacher. idols wouldn't gift a choreographer or hair stylist a fake signature. And also you can compare with polaroids, and albums from fansigns since some people will upload their photos of their signed album. signed albums from fansign obviously can't be fake when the idols sign it right in front of you. for my favorite group (iz*one) you can tell it's never manager signed. I have their mwave album from every era, multiple signed polaroids and i have gotten into 2 fansigns. Also IZ*ONE's signatures are more complicated so they're very easy to recognize if its fake.

I cannot afford fansigns at all, I’m a little too young to go and travel all the way to Korea. And cos of covid we can’t rlly go anywhere. I got a Taeyong superm signed poster off eBay for like £23. I asked the seller for proof of authenticity. She said it hasn’t been opened and showed the sm information stuff at the back. After looking at the poster, it probably does look like it’s rushed.
Even though I would pay anything to get my idol to sign my album in front of me, I feel like signed merch gives the equal experience minus the interactions. And your idol touched it SEE THATS THE BEST PART. My poster hasn’t come yet but will do someday, and I might buy another piece of signed merch another time but hopefully in the future I will go to a fansign.🥺

  • @MikiGo88

As for me who doesn't have a vast income and I rarely buy signed albums. Buying them is much easier than going to meet them in person if we can even try to afford it. Traveling to a different country especially korea is extremely expensive especially because they almost always have them there. I would LOVE to meet every single group I'm obsessed with but it is impossible for someone like me other other people that can't afford to travel even to a difference state. If I can afford it and if I'm lucky I will try for video call events where the artists sign the album, but not many will do video calls so for me if I see the opportunity to buy a legitimate album and I hope they are legit especially because I try to do as much research as a can I will buy signed albums if I feel comfortable with whatever amount I can afford. So yeah it is nice to have the experience but not all of us will get that chance as you mentioned the competition is high. I do understand it's your opinion and respect it but I feel for people like me who loves and support the artist not many of use will ever get the chance to meet them in the flesh.

i still remember i brought(preordered) a heartiz album from a third party claiming to have in contact with OTR for the members to sign my album. the signatures were inside the album on each individual member's pages. I was pretty desperate and uneducated back then so I went ahead and brought it anyway (it was dead expensive). looking back, I shouldn't probably do that but oh well I at least have learned my lesson whether or not if the signatures were legitimate or not. ngl if the album wasn't legitimate the person who "scammed" me signed them well HAHA

There will never be a sure way to tell if a signed album is genuine or not, but there are things you can do to help your self weed out fakes a ones ..
Get to know the signatures of your artists, that is a sure way to weed out fakes.
MNET/MWAVE is practically the only place i trust to buy signed albums from, My entire Collection of IZ*ONE signed albums are MWAVE .. obviously ive heard stories of Staffs signing for the artists and such but its just a rumor at best.
I've seen some really great signatures and ive seen some god awful signatures coming out of MWAVE but i put it down to the artists having SOOO many to sign they rush alot of the signatures and get sloppy when signing, maybe your sloppy one was one of the last ones your artist signed that day after signing 1000 copies ! .. anything is possible .
Buying from Ebay is a risky one .. like in the video states ... sellers forge normal albums and if there good at it they can fool you and make more money .. but i say if you happy with it and beleive its real then thats fine ...
Last one is if your buying a FULL OT signed album (meaning all signatures on one album) of ebay for instance or another sellers site ... , there is a sure way to tell if its good, if it has a "NOT FOR SALE" stamped on the back of the album ... these are signed by the artists them selfs (PROMOTION ALBUMS) and given out to media Execs and corporations relating to media as such to promote the group and they usually find there way in to some ones hands and on to ebay. Read up on the KOMCA sickers meanings ..
Komca is actually an abbreviation for the Korean Music Copyright Association, and these stickers are like a mark of authenticity. They come in two main different types: Gold retail sticker or Silver 비매 (not for sale PROMOTION ALBUMS) sticker. It is important to note that, though most will, not every album will have a Komca sticker on it, even if it is a real copy and not a fake
