    The scene where a Killmonger became King and entered his apartment in the astral plane was so deep, that it solidified as Marvels best antagonist. His ENTIRE life was based upon the discovery of his murdered father. Guess who else had that exact same story. Daredevil

    • @NobodyC13
      @NobodyC13 3 года назад +7

      I think Kilmonger entering his apartment in the astral plane is to heighten his tragedy as a man cut off from his heritage. Compare to T'Challa's trip to the astral plane, it's a mystical scene of the African savanna populated with the spirits of his father and forefathers, indicating the deep connection to his history and culture. Kilmonger, however, has never known Wakanda; he grew up in America, it's the only life he's ever known. The knowledge he has for his homeland is surface level and he lacks respect or reverence to its customs if they don't directly benefit him, as demonstrated when he ordered the sacred Heart-Shaped Herb gardens to be burned, ending the line of succession in the Black Panther. The scene feels like a symbolic representation to the biggest criticisms of people who support en masse deportation of immigrants born and raised in the US; even if you did it, you're essentially condemning people by sending them to a country that's completely alien to them. Kilmonger returning to the scene of his father's death showcases his inability to let go of the past and just how isolated he feels to the rest of the world.

    i often think that Killmonger's story is a critique from Ryan Coogler to Marvel who romanticize and fetishize African culture to create BlackPanther comic. Coogler using this movie to show that this romanticization of Africa's culture and history is ridiculous without recognizing the effect of colonization in our present day. Killmonger is a character that provides a critique of the past and present while T'Challa provides future.

      Interesting point. However,.given the general depiction of Africa and Africans in popular global media these last 160 years ( think Kiplings Tarzan - White Mans Burden) i think a little positive Romaticizing goes a long way. I think Coogler's criticism was for the historical Colonization and the "Scramble fro Africa" view point thats damaged both its heritage/ legacy and continues with China today. I think Romanticizing can be good for a culture anyways,..just look at King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table and what THAT beautiful Lie had/has done for the UK!

    I dont see the wisdom in bringing Kilmonger back. The questions he posed are for "us" to answer. In the case of Heath's Joker, Thanos and Kilmonger, the death of the character (or in Heath's case, himself) is what makes their greatness enduring. There are too many great villains who come back from death only to have their legacies fall flat.

    I remember watching this in the theater and feeling so conflicted about Killmonger’s character. I have to say, I didn’t agree with his violent ideology, but I understood it. I couldn’t help but wish that T’Challa could change it too. But he was broken beyond repair, and that saddened me greatly.
    To me, Eric was a perfect sympathetic villain. He stole the show, and you killed this essay. Keep up the great work.

    • @alexman378
      @alexman378 4 года назад +9

      It’s good writing, both the hero and the villain have a point, but both are also wrong. The difference is that T’Challa, the hero, was willing to listen to what Killmonger said that was right to improve himself and his world, while Eric was dead set in his ideas and too far gone to listen to reason. If they combined forces and Eric was willing to relax and listen, the country would be much safer and better off.

    Apologies if I'm misunderstanding but I don't think Killmonger was consumed by his idea of Wakanda as much as he was consumed by how his personal trauma connected him to the collective trauma of enslaved people being cut off from their heritage by the atrocities of the past. His focus on re-establishing that connection - the sense of responsibility to one's brother (literally for him in regards to his father's brother) on a global scale became the focus of his intent and his ill-fated way to correct his own past.

      @@themarvelousmadamespodcast6035 That's possible, but even that could make for a good story - T'Challa struggles for a movie or two to get his cousin to come around and ultimately fails. So far Marvel has given us redemption for Loki and Nebula and Bucky; we've come to expect it from the wayward (adoptive) siblings of the heroes. Having one get a second chance and actually stay bad would be something new, at this point.
      I'm a softy, though, so I would have been thrilled with him getting some therapy and being the bad cop to T'Challa's good cop.

      @themarvelousmadamespodcast6035 4 года назад

      @@SisterCasendra I think the big difference with T'Challa and Kilmonger is that they have no shared history. Thor and Loki grew up together as brothers. Even Nebula and Gamora were somewhat raised together. Steve and Bucky were essentially brothers too. But T & K would have no bond to fall back on, so I think it would be more of a stretch there.

    • @SisterCasendra

    Also... I find it interesting that Tony Stark who kills his enemies all the time is never presented as a monster or to have a heart full of hatred. Thor is a literal warmonger but because he's blond its ok. T'Challa was chasing Bucky a WEEK before the events of Black panther. But the ONLY time AVENGING is seen as evil is when the Black guy from America wants some of that good ole vengeance.

      Tony pays for what he does and isn’t ever without consequence. Thor is a literal god. It’s the wrong way to kick start a revolution and would’ve done nothing but brought death to wakanda. You’re reading way to far into this man.

      @@CoveringFish nah people are still debating the ethics of star wars 50 years later. I can examine the mcu as much as I like. And Tony never goes to prison or loses his money or suits or anything till endgame (and he kills waaaay more people than Killmonger).

      @@CoveringFish Thor is a god but so? Its not like he's the creator of the universe, he's just a metahuman. Does that mean he can kill whoever he wants? Because might makes right? Why can't Killmonger do that? See the morw you look into it the more you realize Killmonger is only seen as a villain because he wants to help black people and there's no way to do that without addresing who's oppressing black people.

    • @CoveringFish

      Joe Black first off I’m black. Second killmonger is seen as a villain because he wants to use wakanda’s technical superiority to get revenge. Which, in all of history, doesn’t justify itself. If they used their technical superiority to launch a war on anyone who isn’t right. They just prove every single racist correct. And yeah you can examine it as much as you want but no one has to engage with you. So with that I leave you

    I always seen it as a nice allegory for the damage fatherless homes have wrought upon the black community and how we instead run around blaming everyone but ourselves for being the ones who took the hand outs the government gave and forsaking our families.
    And T'challa's plan to enrich those around. The world with their heritage is not far off from what I've been saying we need. American blacks have no ties to their past, so we have no future. But if we get that back, it could help. Maybe not in this generation, but the next.

    You got this completely wrong. Not only was wakanda Eriks home he was the RIGHTFUL heir to the throne. He clearly beat Tchalla in combat and the only reason Tchalla isnt dead is because forrest Whittaker interfered.
