Owning a console especially the ps5 pro has ironically become more PC like than console & made things more complicated whereas the whole point was consoles are supposed to be simple plug n play!
That was never the point of consoles. Don’t know why people keep saying that, consoles were always living room entertainment. They were never an “anti pc” movement. For example the entire point of the original xbox was to bring Windows and direct X to the living room. Consoles are pcs with custom operating systems and hardware, but the gap is bridging closer and closer. Starting with PS5 and series X there really is no point to owning a console. A better experience can be had on pc.

PSSR seems like a turd so far. I’m so glad I skipped this console generation entirely in favor of a 4090 equipped pc back in 2022. Playing the definitive editions of all the best Sony and Xbox games at 144 fps on an OLED ultrawide is the best of all worlds.
Sad you didn't touch on the 3 levels of PSSR quality available, they make a huge difference in performance and image quality, and how Balance and Quality PSSR pretty much look the same despite Quality mode taking a ~10fps hit.
This one’s a bit better than Ubisoft Massive’s issues with Outlaws and Avatar (I’m convinced they didn’t even turn these on before shipping them). Those are made sadder by them being dynamic resolution to being with, so they already looked and ran better on the Pro without PSSR. For DD2, the picture does look crisper and performance is definitely a lot better. But some of PSSR’s quirks do appear. It’s honestly not overly distracting in this one though and the benefits outweigh the cons for now. This is something Sony needs to address though as everyone is going to be stuck with these versions once the PS6 hits. Not to mention we haven’t had a console restricted upscaler before. On PC players can usually have control over this. Even in games that run well with PSSR v1, what happens when we are on PSSR v4 or something. Do developers need to keep going into every game to update the version? We all know that won’t happen. But either way they need to fix these couple problem games lest we all be stuck with them next gen. Devs need to stop just slapping PSSR on and shoving the ‘upgrade’ out the door. No upgrade is sometimes better. The only one to get it right ironically looks good with PSSR. Ragnarok allows players to actually turn off PSSR of they choose and use another AA method. The worst solution is Ubisoft, who have taken away all other modes. Meaning you get a worse image than Quality Mode on base consoles, and you have the PSSR fizzle to boot. I have to stress most games look great. But these problem games are big problems and something needs to be done about how these go about being released.
it should be criminal to have 30 fps modes on that pro console.. Glad I finally jumped to PC instead of buying the ps5pro :P Granted I did spend over £3600 rather than just the £700 I would have for the ps5pro, but my PC is gonna last and blow the ps6 out of the water too ;)
Nice Vid DF. Dragon's Dogma 2 is much more Playable now in all the Modes, which is really good too see on the Pro. PSSR is definitely looking like an Issue for alot of Games, is worth Devs using PSSR or trying different methods instead.
The fact that Sony isn’t requiring developers to _leave the existing (legacy) modes in place_ is inexcusable. Pro modes should only ever be _additional_ modes, not replacements.
@ceaserknk6640 It is not just this game. Alan Wake 2 and Silent Hill 2 both have the same issues with their PSSR implementation. PSSR is just not very good.
@digitalfoundry does your framerate detection software work with composite capture? If so, it'd be fun to watch retro episode in which you analyze NES, SNES, Genesis, and PSX games
The future is modulation consoles, but these corporate people are slow to realize it. Stop releasing whole new console and pro versions. Just make your damn consoles upgradeable like pc, put of course you want it to be proprietary modules. Even so upgradeable proprietary is better and cheaper than 20 version of consoles; less e-waste too. Why cant you understand and accept the facts❗🙄
DLSS went through the same growing pains. What do you think the "learning" part of "machine learning" means and requires? It needs to go through numerous iterations, and that means at some point bringing it to market. They can't improve it using a handful of testers.
A dev currently working on a pro patch for a game has claimed there’s already multiple versions of PSSR. Same dev also said that is the likely reason for the inconsistency in its use & effectiveness because some updates are using newer versions of PSSR than others.
Curious, this flicker in shadows due to PSSR, will this be always an aftermath of PSSR ? or is it something that will surely be addressed in later releases?

Just give us the option to disable PSSR - either by Sony or game companies. Its clear that in most games there's no advantage to using it until it matures and it causes unwanted flickering
I mean, I’m over here playing Resident Evil Village on mine at 120 FPS (90 FPS with RT on). Loving it. It also makes existing games with unstable framerates that don’t have Pro patches more playable, Metaphor: ReFantazio and Zenless Zone Zero are two that come to mind.
This game looks and feels like a perfect candidate for native 4k 60fps on Pro. You can't tell me this game, in performance mode, looks better than Ryse: Son of Rome. That game can do 4k60 maxed out on a Ryzen 7 2700X with an rx 7700 XT without missing a beat.
In short: PS5Pro is not objectively better. PSSR does not work. The framerate improves in part due to the reduction in native resolution, which is lower than that of PS5.

Sad you didn't touch on the 3 levels of PSSR quality available, they make a huge difference in performance and image quality, and how Balance and Quality PSSR pretty much look the same despite Quality mode taking a ~10fps hit.
Hopefully as PSSR matures and game Devs get a better grasp on AI upscaling technology we'll see improved results.
It's delirious to charge 800 euros for the Pro compared to 374 euros for the digital edition PS5 (on offer right now). Sony, what are you doing.
and it still runs 720p upscaled to 4k just like the ps5 amateur
On PS6 we will have a magic button and the PSSR will look perfectly fine.
it should be criminal to have 30 fps modes on that pro console..
