She just feared losing him as her best friend. The love triangle was more two guys loving one girl, but she always knew who she actually wanted to be with. Which was Pacey.
Oh she was definitely in Love with Dawson in my opinion. No doubt about that. And she showed that consistently. The issue was she didn’t know how to handle it.

They never “worked” because the writers needed to create stupid drama to continue having content, so they made them change their mind every 5 seconds. The characters did work together, their only fault was being controlled by a show that needed to keep having seasons. Joey broke up with Dawson twice over stupid contradictory reasons when she was the one who did everything for him to be with her at first. And Joey and Pacey were not perfect for each other at all, maybe in a different lifetime where Dawson didn’t exist, but his presence and memory destroyed Pacey’s self esteem and turned him into an insecure asshole
I feel like Dawson brought Joey and Pacey together without realizing it and then he blamed them for it, they always were great friends but they never worked as a couple where Pacey was always there for Joey and they only worked as a couple and couldn’t be just friends.

This triangle turns that on its head. Dawson and Joey were childhood sweethearts and first loves. Joey had dreamed about ending up with Dawson since she was a kid. But they both loved the versions of each other in their heads so when they tried a real romantic relationship it never worked. In s1 joey thinks dating Dawson will fix all her problems and make her happy. But in reality no one can live up to that so she breaks up with him find her true passions. Joey always had this notion that she was meant to end up with Dawson because of course its first love! Its what 10 year old Joey wanted! But throughout the show she realises thats not the case and learnt to let go of that idea no matter how hard it is.
I’ve watched this show from start to finish a few times and Dawson was extremely manipulative to both Joey and Pacey. He was a spoiled brat. And every time he wouldn’t get what he wanted he made Joey and Pacey feel like crap for it. Joey and Pacey truly loved each other but a big part of their downfall was Dawson and how badly he made them feel for not sacrificing their love for each other to save his feelings. Joey and Pacey we’re always too nice to see that about him. Pacey and Joey continually took the high road when it came to Dawson.

I agree with you. Personally I thought Pacey and Joey had wonderful moments. But they felt very forced and toxic at times. People always talk about Pacey and Joey “chemistry”. Yeah they had chemistry. But chemistry doesn’t mean connection. Doesn’t mean it’s meant to be. Dawson and Joey had exactly that. They definitely should have ended the series with them.
As much as Joey is more popular with Pacey, there still are plenty of people that liked and still love Dawson and Joey and never got invested in her other relationship. And as much as some like to believe that the new coupling save the show, s3 and beyond was never as popular as s1 and s2 (USA).
