I saw Sleeping Beauty in the theater when I was a child and when the dragon showed up I was literally hiding on the floor in terror. I've never seen anything that scary in any other Disney movie. I like the 7 Dwarves of course, they're among my favorite characters ever. But no other villain could touch that dragon.

I'm sorry, but when I read "I see the light" I can only think of "The Last Goodbye" from Billy Boyd.
And I will forever reference this podcast as “intentionally blank” and I hope you guys stop kidding yourselves and just officially name it that!

Brandon has called it "Intentionally Blank" several times in other videos without comment. I think it's just a running joke within the podcast that they need to find a name (which fits the title).
It makes me so happy that they both love Tangled. It's not only my favorite Disney movie, but probably my favorite movie overall

If we're still lacking a poll for Dan v Brandon's poor taste, Dan not liking Ratatouille and Up gives him the poor-tasting crown. (As if there was doubt before this episode!) I bet he didn't like Wall-E either!

But Ratatouille is like the 2nd best Pixar movie! The humanity!
The only way I can see someone not liking ratatouille is thinking the central conceit (rat piloting a human like a meat mecha, somehow, completely unexplained) is childish rather than hilarious, and POSSIBLY that Remy deciding to betray Linguine's trust right at the end is possibly unnecessarily harsh. But I don't see how that can poison the entire movie THAT badly.

My favorite line from Snow White is when she cleans the dwarves' house. One of the dwarves complains while looking at his coffee mug, ☕ sugars gone. I love that line. The fact that it was all hand drawn blows me away.

Dan, having not actually read the book, I imagine the French stage adaptation Notre Dame de Paris rings fairly true. Most likely because it's still french. It ends with Esmerelda's death and Quasimodo has a big song about how they will find their two skeleton's enlaced together in death.

What About Bob isn't quite how you paint it. Richard Dreyfuss's character isn't all nice and perfect, he is a self-centered person who cares more about himself than his patients, wife, or kids, and Bill Murray, by being the way he is, shows this. I also put myself in as a character in movies or shows but with this movie I put myself as Bob rather than Dr. Leo Marvin.
How Hunchback EVER made it to Disney animation I will never know.
Actually the stage version of hunchback, in the epilogue, the narrators describe a malformed skeleton being discovered holding a female skeleton in the crypts of France. This is after Esmeralda dies from her sentence to be burned and Quasimodo "rescues" her, he then throws Frollo from the cathedral.

Eh snow white is more about a feeling than any kind of complex plot. The emotional simplicity and how someone can be so pure (which i really dont think is unrealistic) that when an evil hearted person harms her, both her friends and nature itself rises to avenge her. In a way snow white is a goku. A flat character arc who affects others. It does have structural problems tho, its mostly mickey mouse shorts type of tangent animation, like the cleaning segment or washing segment. If you like those segments youll like the movie. I just think theyre fun

So I think Dan is ranking Incredibles 2 better than Cars 2 better than Ratatouille better than Up. Mind blown. (If I remember he does adore WALL-E..... So I guess there is hope)
Incredibles 1 is the best Fantastic Four movie ever made.

I absolutely understand how critiquing movies is safer ground than books when it could adversely effect the authors. However, I was curious if Bran and Dan would be up for having a discussion about classic literature. They do such a great job pulling apart what makes a good story, why a story flops, etc that an in-depth look at why classics have endured and which ones are favorites would be neat to hear about!

I will defend Kung Pow until the day I die.
Story time. Over a decade ago I arranged to do a baby sitting swap with Dan and his wife I had one little angel baby who never cried and couldn't even walk and Dan had 3 or 4 kids who had lots of energy but figured with my vast parenting experience I would just be a pro at wrangling more kids anyhow. I was rudely awakened when the youngest girl randomly took a break from playing and came up right be side me to say hi and then just hardcore barfed on my jacket. That barf looked like exactly like a full sponge cupcake soaked in green soup. If I would have had the nerve to poke it I think it would have jiggled like jello. As I looked at the chubby blonde bundle of cute iI was sure that thing that came out of her was bigger than what I thought her stomach should have been. She bounded off to play again and didn't act sick the rest of the time. This experience is the only thing I can think about whenever I see or hear anything about Dan wells. I'm not into horror things in general but if I were I don't think I'd be able to read his books without that sensory memory making the horror of whatever he wrote even more horrific. The End

If you’re not a child and you still like Disney Pixar I don’t know what to tell you. They all suck. The only thing worth examining is the animation.
Disney did Han Solo so dirty with the Solo movie that it's inexcusable. They had the chance to tell a really interesting and compelling origin story for one of the, if not the, most beloved character in the franchise and Solo is what we got?
There is one fairly faithful adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, it's the French musical, "Notre-Dame de Paris." Very good music. Does not change the ending.

Fantastic Beasts--it feels like the real selling point of this series of movies is that they are intended to be the prequel to the HP series, eventually leading up to Dumbledore's showdown with Grindelwald, but I don't think you find this out until near the end of the first film. Looking back I really enjoy the idea of expanding the HP world and exploring such an important time period we knew about from the series in a different medium (as well as seeing the wizarding world and culture in the United States during this time, and how it differed from Britain's wizarding world), but I feel like if I'd had that knowledge of how it tied into the main series going in, I would have been more invested in the first movie earlier on.
Kung Pao is phenomenal, I love it every time I watch
Bill Murrey was in the film version of The City of Ember. If you haven't seen it you should. I really enjoyed it.
NGL, I'm a little blown away by Brandon's take on The Little Mermaid. It is, quite literally, Teenager Does Stupid Things: The Story. Everything she does is misguided and puts her life in danger. Had she gotten what she wanted immediately, Ursula would have retained control of everything and likely eventually killed everyone in her domain. Hell, in the original version of the story, she DOES die for her stupidity, because she never got the prince to desire her to begin with.
Brandon is SO right about Ratatouille and Dan is SO wrong lol. It's easily one of Pixar's best films, and I'm honestly shocked that Dan can't at least appreciate how good the storytelling is even if he didn't personally enjoy it.

I must insist - The Little Mermaid has the BEST songs of all time. The G.O.A.T., if you will.
On the subject of Snow White's voice, we don't actually have that problem here in Sweden; seeing as how the voices for the oldest Disney movies have been redone and redubbed at least once, or maybe even twice over the years since the original; so renting/buying and watching Snow White with a Swedish dub, we do get to listen to a more modern sounding voice cast, which is probably for the best, all things considered :)
Animated Mulan would be my favorite Disney Princess Movie and has my favorite score and music.
Dan has range, man!!!! I love how he’s critiquing Disney movies, when he writes such dark stuff. Just listened to “I am not a Serial Killer” and wooooweeee. It was intense. It was fantastic, ......but..... j/k, it was simply fantastic.And unique. But wow, it was one intense dark fantasy thriller detective psychological novel! Lol, now I’m hearing him talk about hunchback and he’s in his element!
Ok, those sure were quite some hot takes, since I disagree with almost everything. :P
Not with the main principle, though, I think all of those movies are probably unreasonably highly rated, to at least some extent. The rest, I suppose, means I have rather diffrent taste to that of Brandon's.
For instance, I agree _Indiana Jones: The Crystal Skull_ has some over the top scenes, but so do the previous movies of the series. I don't have any reference point to the effects of a (nuclear) detonation, so any implausability in the Fridge scene is beyond my knowledge. Meanwhile, the Stukas (in the _Last Crusade,_ I recall) only using their machine guns _after_ the heroes have gone inside the cave is at least equally immersion-breaking to me. And as someone from a country that was invaded by Soviets - even more so than by the Nazis - I have no problem treating the Soviet mooks at least as expendable as their German equivalents. (Especially since said war showed their own leadership considering them quite expendable too.)
_The fantastic Beasts,_ was ok to me, although I watched it in 3 parts from a streaming service, so I guess it was more of a mini series to me. Perhaps that's what made it work.
The Disney Princess movies are a topic of their own, but I'll say I'm not too fond of Moana's music and prefer at least _Tangled_ and _Frozen_ (even if Let it go has been beaten to death and back by this point, there are quite a few other good songs as well) to it. To be honest, I might even consider _Brave_ more musically appealing than _Moana,_ although that might be just due to having been exposed to the former way more. And while we're at it, there are 2 great songs in _The Snow White_ that I remember (and one good that I don't remember), while I only remember one kinda good song from _Moana._ But that's all taste, I guess.
_The Incredibles 2,_ I think, while definitely not on pare with the first one in pretty much any aspect, was still an okay movie and a rather good one for a Disney sequel (which isn't that high of a bar, to be real). And while I also agree it was the first one again with a bunch of altered details, I'd still argue those alterations were enough to justify a completely new movie. The new point of view worked for me and actually provided some of the greatest comedy in it - not the bumbling father but the mom who answers to calls from and about home in the middle of a the busiest workday. It's funny 'cause it's true. My only real problem with it is how the villain got revealed and the hero captured both for incredibly stupid reasons. And if wouldn't have even dragged the narrative to give them better reasons. I can only imagine it would've dragged the production to give the writers enough time to come up with something better.
I kinda agree with most of the points about the Star Wars sequels*, although I must point out I did like the prequels better when I was at the target audience age. I'm of the generation who grew up with the prequels so they'll always be dear to me, so I'm probably biased. But my kid sister, who first watched every Star Wars film with an episode number within the same month, also liked the prequel trilogy the best.
*And here's the obligatory rant:
To me, _The Force Awakens_ felt like the whole universe was conspiring to recreate the original Star Wars movie as closely as possible: The rebel victory was undone and a new insane planetary weapon built. A fallen jedi with a mask and temperament problems captured (without killing) a hopelessly back fighting brat, who in turn used a quirky astromech droid for delivering crusial info - via a desert planet - to other rebels. A group of misfits - consisting of an orphaned aspirin jedi from the desert planet, a morally dubious guy and a grey-haired legend - was assembled for the delivery, after which they headed for space, gun, and sword fighting on the superweapon, having the old legend killed and finally blowing up the place (but not the masked villain). I think it might have been a good movie if the original Star Wars didn't exist, but since a most of its non-disney-cartoonish comedy comes from references to that film, I don't know... It's not really a bad movie but... meh.
The soundtrack was nice, though. Probably the best part.
The other sequels had kinda the same issue. They felt too much like re-painted and little rearranged copies of the original trilogy that would've been less jarring without the original trilogy. And what didn't fell like such, felt like a Disney cartoon with all the animal companions and Disney deaths.
Indy drank from the holy grail so I was able to roll with him surviving in the fridge

I always have a greater time watching Crystal Skull than Doom Temple to be honest. A lot of thing that we criticise about the fourth could be said about the second. Talking about the ridiculousness of rope swinging, car fencing and aliens ? How about that dinner session or the tunnel roller coaster ? Plus the love interest was soooo annoying.

FINALLY SOMEBODY ELSE SAYS THAT INCREDIBLES 2 WAS BAD!
The first 4 minutes of that film were great. The rest is terrible. Jack-Jack-ex-machina. Dash (my favorite character) almost never used his super-speed to its full extent. The entire resolution of the first film is pushed aside. It's just awful.
I thought some of the scenes with Bob taking care of the kids were enjoyable but yeah the movie was pretty bad. I thought the twist was less interesting than if it was played straight
Yeah I agree. I think that Bob's arc in the first film was completely disregarded and there isn't any coherent theme. There are some individual scenes that are good (I do love Frozone trying to save the kids from the other supers before getting mind controlled himself. Excellent sequence.) But overall it's kind of a mess of a movie.

I think the action scenes are pretty solid, and I enjoyed the final sequence where it’s the kids who have to come up with a plan. But yeah the story is so all over the place.
Kung Pow is one of my favorite comedies of all time. My friends and I will quote the whole movie

Still waiting for Tangled video essay
I thought Fantastic Beasts was mediocre and too slow but I still was able to enjoy it. The second one is way worse in every regard. It was pretty incredible, actually.
Just give two scores in your ratings: one evaluating the created work for its time, and another for how it compares now timelessly.
I love Fantastic Beasts. I actually liked it better than the Harry Potter films because as a book fan I I was always disappointed.
Why? Just curious as I hate Fantastic Beasts with a passion. I felt like we could have gotten a magical Adventure in the vein of Indiana Jones, exploring lost worlds and far away places in pursuit of magical creatures (kind of like Pokémon lol). But instead we got this... bloated drama set in New York with a guy that can’t handle dangerous animals.
I'm with you! I love Fantastic Beasts. The sequel was awful, but I think Fantastic Beasts on its own is really a wonderful adventure.

@@christianbjorck816 when you put it like that I can see the disconnect. And I would've been happy with a hint of that. I didn't see Newt as being incapable just inexperienced. I liked the time period and that whole aesthetic plus the characters were charming. I don't know, I just really enjoyed the whole experience.
@@christianbjorck816 that to me sounds like a problem with your expectations. When and who set up those promises that were never delivered upon? Not living up a personally perceived potential that was never promised does not really constitute a bad movie.
To list some of the things I liked:
The characters and there interactions
The hyjinx of the klepto monster
The reveal of the boy as the powerful one that was being searched for the whole time, even though you were made to believe it was his little sister.
I love how defensive Brandon is of ratatouille…because I am the same way about the film.
If you guys did a tier list of Disney princesses… that thing would go so viral.
The sympathetic character in Freddy Got Fingered is the filmmaker. I like that the filmmaker convinced someone to pay MILLIONS OF DOLLARS for this absurdist story. That joke NEVER gets old for me.
Would the movie "Smokey and the Bandit" qualify as a food heist?
The whole sequel trilogy is a series of interesting case studies in reacting to online criticism, and honestly I think proof a lot of that criticism misses the mark.
TFA was reacting to criticism of the prequels, that they were full of boring politicking and lame dialogue. So the movie was kind of a remake of the original with more action scenes. They even go out of their way to designate a system where politics happens and then blow it up! In the original the destruction of Alderan is hugely personal to one of our main characters, in TFA it's just done to say "This isn't the prequels we promise!"
TLJ (while I do love it) is a response to the criticism of TFA. What were the biggest complaints about TFA? "Rey is a Mary Sue" and "Its just a remake of new hope". The movie basically goes down the list of Mary Sue traits and tries to disqualify them, she spends most of the movie training, being insulted and rejected by a former main character, failing, and then getting saved by (who ends up being) the ultimate villain of the film. And the movie goes in a radically different direction plotwise from the originals, as if to assure us it isn't also "just a remake".
I don't even have to get into Rise of Skywalker, like it literally undoes Kylos arc from the last movie in the first scene, and flat out retcons the most criticized plot points of TLJ.
You are right on the mark about there being lots of great little moments in Rise of Skywalker, that ultimately add up to less than the sum of their parts. In addition to what you said, I love how it takes the idea of their force bond further, they showed that water could transfer through it in TLJ, so they have a cool moment where Kylo uses it to steal something from Rey and use it to track them down. Then they take it even farther and have them fight via astral projection! I did love the scene with Harrison Ford and Adam Driver's performance as you said, and I think that's as close they could have gotten to selling his redemption given they had already wasted so much time by throwing away what had happened in the last movie.
I've been waiting for this for a long, long time.
I guess I that is why I love "What About Bob?" I have always watched it as a dark comedy. This psycho takes over a family from one of the world's leading psychiatrists. It's amazingly evil. I like it a lot. Similar to "Drop Dead Fred". A terrifying look into a literal insane person's life. "Drop Dead Fred" is a very dark movie that is often played for laughs. But knowing what we know now (know better?) about mental health. Both of these movies are terrifying. And funny.
Esmeralda gets hanged, put in a mass grave and the Hunchback crawls in there and starves to death... time to read The Hunchback LOL

You know, as far as Dan not liking Up...I have thoughts.
I left Up with a bad taste in my mouth. There was so much to like about it. Not just in the first fifteen minutes, but all throughout the movie but here's what ruined it for me.
It might be the anti-PETA side of me, but I found myself so resentful of the subplot of "We have to save the bird!" All throughout I wanted to scream, "Let the Howard Hughes guy have the stupid bird!" If you'll remember, the villain was wrongly called a fraud for faking the bird skeleton, and I felt he deserved to clear his name. I cared so much more about Carl being able to deliver the house to waterfall, and I resented the movie when it tried to frame his ultimate arrival as unsatisfying.
I should add I see what they were getting at, and if you gave me the broad strokes, I would say it sounds good, but I really think the execution was deeply muddled.
It's funny, because I saw the movie with my mom and she had almost the exact same opinion, and yet I've never heard anyone else bring up these problems.
Totally agree. I wanted the ”villan” to get his redemtion. It’s just a bird was my exact thought.
I'm with Dan on Ratatouille, both in not liking it, and in not knowing how to articulate why. I think I just didn't like Remy as a character.

Wreck it Ralph 2 (Ralph wrecks the Internet) breaks my heart. I am so fond of the first movie, so it hurt me almost to the point of physical illness me to watch the 2nd film meander painfully to a boring mess of a duster fire.
I worked just next door to the distillery where the Bourbon heist took place, actually walking within 10 feet of open warehouse doors at times (on the backside of the warehouse which wasn't even one of their shipping exits). I wasn't surprised by the theft at all, security always seemed lax. After it happened I never saw those doors open again :D

fantastic beasts also makes some interesting implications about what happens when magical people can’t use their magic….and yet that seems to be the main punishment at hogwarts…see hagrid and every movie where the try and kick harry out of school
You talked about heartbreak on the Incredibles 2. I think that's why I have such an irrational dislike nearing hatred for the sequels. The original Trilogy was everything to us growing up. To see it treated so poorly was a slap in the face. I couldn't even make it past the 15 minute mark in 9.
I think it's also why I like the Mandalorian more than it really deserves. Because it's so clearly made by someone who actually cares about Star Wars.
The problem with 7th was that it was completely unoriginal, 8th felt like one good movie mixed with one bad and one mediocre movie and the 9th was just completely stupid.

The music is *chef's kiss* and they stay true to the dark plot of the book. No forced happy ending.
I recommend it in both the original French, and the English translation.
I think he did specifically mentioned the stage version is better.
Thanks, I must have missed that. He later says no version of it keeps the dark ending so that is why I assumed he hadn't seen it.

I hate musicals, but loved that one.

No way. Even if I wasn't biased and Hunchback wasn't my favorite Disney movie (it is), it would still be better than Little Mermaid. Little Mermaid has, like, two good things going for it. Ursula is great and Sebastian is great. I didn't enjoy anything outside of those. Hunchback has one bad thing. The gargoyles don't take away enough quality from the movie in my opinion. They're awful, but they're not bad enough to ruin the movie
The Office doesn't really rely on "annoying people being annoying" (said with a humourless sour face). It is really relatively amusing or odd people being annoying to each other for comedy. One might like some of them more or less, that's normal, but it's mostly still fun. (I would say the US version tries to be more "warm", whereas the original British version requires more of a neutral detachment. It's just entertainment, one can figure it out.)
There are some really unsympathetic statements and stances in this video. Or I guess two I mentioned.

The voice of Snow White (Adriana Caselotti) was not allowed to be used in anything else. Her future career was background singing in "The Wizard of Oz" and "It's a Wonderful Life". She was never in credits of any movie.
I did watch it! It is great. I think I might have recorded this just before, but can't remember. She might have had an influence on what I was saying.

I think the one thing that really destroyed Harlan Ellison's reputation more than anything else was his failure to work on "Last Dangerous Visions." He was so obsessed with people paying him properly for his work, and respecting his work, and yet he did not treat other authors' work so seriously.

Dan I don't hate Solo, but it was my least favorite. Getting to see Yoda cut loose and eventually fight the Emperor (he didn't lose, just ran out of time) were the pay off of the Prequals. I love that Rey has a yellow light saber and I want to see more of the Sequels because they feel unfinished to me.

Lots of people here probably already know this but J. R. R. Tolkien hated the Snow White movie because of Disney's treatment of the dwarfs. He and C. S. Lewis even went to see it in the theater to so they could hate on it together
I think Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was never going to be as good as the original trilogy. We all knew Harrison Ford was too old. We all knew they couldn't recast him. We all knew that it would basically be a formulaic Indy movie. Was it bad? Compared to the other Indy films, yes, but there's certainly a LOOOOONG list of films far worse than it. Indy IV was just a nostalgia grab, and I love it for that. I'm curious what Indy V does. After IV I feel more agreeable to recasting and doing a younger WWII era set of films again.
Just you wait for the Disney fan fic travesty that comes out soon. Too-Old-to-walk Indy and some random person ”taking over”.... trust me, I think it will make Crystal Skull look like a masterpiece.
Hunchback is one of the most underrated Disney movies of the 1990s, which maybe isn't saying much since it's an amazing time period of Disney animated movies. Also, What About Bob is hilarious. I had the same reaction that Brandon had, it was so weird and strange, but then you just get into it and it's so funny. Much like Napoleon Dynamite, the first watch was unbearable, but after that I understood the nature of the show and thought it was really funny.
It’s too bad a studio like Dreamworks didn’t do Hunchback in the same era they made Prince of Egypt. Felt like they could handle the serious material without making it ”silly” or ”funny”. They could deliver banger music too.

Kung Fury is the adult equivalent, and also incredible.
Cinderella is best Disney princess, prefer her to all the reneissance ones. She is a victim of abuse, tries to not that get her down, does what she can in her situation and for her diligence she is rewarded. And no she is not ”saved” by the Prince. He is part of the reward so to speak. She is saved by her own actions and her evil sisters and wicked step-mother fall by their own swords.

I will raise my hand as a devout defender of Kung Pow. The first time I saw that movie, I have never laughed so hard in my life, and to this day that remains the case. I love that movie.

I would be curious to hear Brandon's thoughts on the "if it came out now without context" view for classic sci-fi/fantasy. For example, I'm not sure how well Asimov or Frank Herbert would hold up under that lens, even though both wrote indisputable classics of the genre.
I don't know, what I've read of Dune still holds up and almost reads like a modern sci-fi adventure. Maybe that changes later on though as I'm still early in the book.
