I started a mailing list this year and recently crested 100 subscribers with a 55-65% open rate on my 2x monthly emails. I don't have a link magnet or product yet, just "if you want to see even more detailed breakdowns & BTS content, sign up here." I don't get many email replies, though sometimes in my discord or livestreams people compliment the content in my emails. ...taking imperfect action and figuring things out one day at a time✌ Great metaphor with the bowls, too btw.
I've started taking notes when watching your videos on metaphors you use, retention boosting "mini hooks" to tell ppl why they should keep watching the next segment of the vid, and when you interrupt the main theme with a mini-story to make an individual point, etc, in hopes that I start making my own connections like this better. Despite understanding how these things work, it's still surprisingly challenging for me to come up with ones for my own content 🤦♂ Hoping its like a muscle and I'll get better over time.

Hey Ed, great concept and I'd love to implement it but I'm just not sure what product or service I can provide. I have a travel related channel. Any advice?
Great video! My thought is that there is an element of momentum required to start implementing some of this - for example, a community of 3 super fans will seem rather lonely - but 100-1000 starts to get exciting. So there may be a “build” point where you need to get your initial RUclips channel to a certain size beforehand - and that size will vary per niche. (For example, I’m quite search-heavy - so I suspect I don’t have the same ratio of super-fans as a channel with a narrower niche).
This is definitely a “next step” for me at a (hopefully) near point.
Yea I think so, you need some kind of following first otherwise its all going to feel a bit pointless

I have been burnt out for a year now, and def my community (in this case I chose to base it on FB group) has been keeping me sane.
Not just because they trust my judgment, buy the products, but also the sheer amount of love they provide me with.
I plan on having a second channel where the community will be based inside of SubStack... and yeah, planning to work another year or two- and retire.

Hey Ed! Just want to send some massive appreciation for all the hard work you’ve put into all the great videos on both this and your other channel. There hasn’t been one video I’ve seen that hasn’t left me feeling inspired, more eager to create and more insightful and deliberate with both making and publishing videos. A request I have however is if you could help answer the question of how a well structured and produced vlog might look like where you can keep a storyline and capture your audience when filming something you cannot plan. As I’m a farmer and my channel is mostly about what I do on a day to day basis it’s hard to know in advance what a video might turn out being about. Would love to hear any ideas you might have on the matter. Keep it up 👍
This is my favorite creator info channel right now. I can't tell you how much all of this aligns with my soul bits. This is how youtube should be used. I'm really enjoying breaking the views/subs are everything mindset. Has me really excited to create, for the right reasons, but also not waste my time from the start because of the wrong mindset.

Love it, Ed. It's amazing how many RUclipsrs have no bowls at all, they just count on adsense money and sponsorships leaving soooo much on the table.
Good point Anna. I've got water bowls for the rabbits.....a few bowls for kittens too. I think of adsense money as a myth. But when it comes to fun...I would need something much larger than a bowl to hold on to RUclips friends and fun! Have a super weekend!

My biggest problem is trying to think of a product or service that I can sell. I feel like review channels have that problem generally speaking. Doing the affiliate marketing, but that has not been going well. Trying to find the best ways to monetize and keep monetizing when on break.
so true. I review watches and it is tough. I know once I stop making videos it is OVER! Which is on average about 4-5 years for creators. I have about a year left!
Ever considered creating a watch brokerage service? I used one before. I knew a guy and he hooked people up with watches from all over the world.

Hey Ed, I have watched many of your videos are you are still not making any sense. Can you please be a little less vague.
You see, I do not want to sell anything. I hated personal training because I had to sell a service. I hated being a mobile mechanic because I had to sell something. This is why I focus on evergreen videos.

I wanted to add that there is nothing wrong with selling and I agree with the video 100%. It’s just not for me, personally!
I don't want to sell anything either. I have affiliate link but I don't mention it. I just don't feel like pushing things to people. I think I'll go back to my original plan, just do what I do and forget about what the people say to sell things or push people to buy a product. 😊

I think it's less about selling people and more about preventing people from wasting their money on crap. Just as much value in telling people what NOT to buy

I've been a working hard as a RUclipsr for over 4 years now and I haven't even reached 500 subs yet, then I see Ed easily take this channel to almost 10k in a few weeks.
This is such valuable information for whoever wants to sell services via RUclips. Unfortunately, that's not my case; not that I feel uncomfortable selling, but my niche just doesn't seem to have that side of it. A walking videos channel could hardly sell anything, but maybe I'm being blind and can't see the paradise right before my eyes :)
I started building my email list alongside my channel for these very reasons. It amazes me how many creators get to thousands of subscribers and don't have an email list or podcast as a different way to grow their communities. Great video Ed as usual!

I believe that you can keep the faucet on provided you continue to provide value. Often, I will make a similar video (for example, I have over a dozen videos, dedicated to casting a fly rod) to speak to anyone new that happens to land in that first bowl. I also continue to come up with new ideas to keep the current audience engaged.

What do you think of Substack as an "Outside" source? I've been hearing a lot of how it's growing, and it works as a "newsletter", too.
MXR reddit is the master of this, they got fully demonetise but they still generating crazy amount in their patreon, they still upload everyday on RUclips because their format is actually sustainable but if they pause for a vacation or something their money will still be rolling in

I'd argue about the email list, I think Discord is better because the community gets to interact with one another. Also what Yes Theory did with their Facebook group is genius!
Depends on the audience, a lot of people dont use Discord, especially older people. The younger crowd love it though. There are many ways to do it :)
