Here's a guide on how to use salt in watercolor painting:
What Salt Does:
Salt absorbs water from the wet paint, creating interesting textures and patterns.
It can create a "starburst" effect around the salt grains.
The salt effect is more pronounced with darker colors and thicker paint layers.
How to Use Salt:
Prepare Your Painting:
Apply a layer of wet paint to your paper. The paint should be evenly distributed without any puddles.
The best time to add salt is when the paint is still wet but not too runny.
Sprinkle Salt:
Gently sprinkle table salt over the wet paint.
You can create different effects by varying the amount of salt and the way you sprinkle it.
Let it Dry:
Allow the painting to dry completely. The salt will create textured areas as the water evaporates.
Brush Off the Salt:
Once the painting is dry, gently brush off the salt crystals.
Tips and Tricks:
Experiment with Different Salts: Coarse salt creates larger textures, while fine salt creates more subtle effects. You can also try sea salt or rock salt for unique results.
Control the Effect: The amount of salt and the wetness of the paint will determine the strength of the effect.
Layer Colors: Add layers of color over the salted areas for more complex effects.
Protect Your Work: Once the salt is brushed off, you can spray the painting with a fixative to prevent smudging.
Common Uses of Salt in Watercolor:
Creating Starry Skies: Sprinkle salt on a dark blue wash to create sparkling stars.
Texturing Landscapes: Add salt to areas like sand dunes, rocky cliffs, or snow-covered mountains.
Adding Depth to Flowers: Sprinkle salt on the petals of flowers to create a textured and realistic look.
Experimenting with Patterns: Sprinkle salt in different patterns to create unique designs.
Remember: Salt can be messy, so work in a well-ventilated area and cover your workspace. Have fun experimenting with salt and discover your own creative techniques!
