  • Many anglers are very afraid of hooking themselves when around fishing lures. Whether bass or other fish, the best thing is to not panic. Listen to veteran bass pro, John Crews, explain how he does not get hooked after all these years.

I totally agree man ive been saying this to myself and mentioned a few times to others but ive always noticed when people got hooked badly it was from us reacting and pulling back and just digging it deeper cause the force of the fish thrashing it head around in ur hands won't really hook u deep.

Had the misfortune of getting hooked past the barb for the first time about a week ago. Had to go to the hospital to get it removed 😢😢😢

I’ve gotten to wear I won’t handle small bass. They get so crazy flipping around I just use plastic gripper and then get the hook out. I had one jerk in my hand and hooked my thumb past the barb in the thick skin. Had to just yank it out.

What is the “braid trick” ?

When you use braid and pressure on the shank to pop the hook out

Good tips John. Make sure you have a good pair of side cutters in the boat in case you do get hooked. I had a smallmouth with a vision 110 flopping around in the boat bury a treble in my big toe. I no longer wear flip flops when fishing. Once I got the fish off the hook removal was easy with the side cutters.

I had to remove a Little John rear hook from my index finger last week. I was impressed by how well the treble stay pinned in my finger. I also landed my personal best smallmouth with the lure last week and won some money in the Big Bass Tournament on Douglas with it. Fishing is very much a give and take sport.

Great video, but after 50+ years, it finally happened. And it was a huge chain pickerel that did it. All 3 sets on the McStick got in me. Only one got buried past the barb. Then one good shake and popped it all the way through. And of course, once it happens, more follow. Never fun.

DT 6 past the barb in my left index finger. Hardest thing was getting the fish off of the lure with the other treble stuck in my finger.

I stab my fingers all the time because my hands are much faster than my brain. But the only time past the barb was something stupid I did with a jerkbait fish. It required a trip to the doc at the end of the day. I didn't know the braided line trick then, I don't know if I could have managed anyway since it was in my right hand. Stupid fish.

Little off topic here but, what reels do you use? I’ve seen in recent videos of yours, Lews, Shimano and Daiwa
