The Lovebites album is amazing, glad it got the shoutout. Some of the technical ability shown by Both guitarists is out of this world. in fact Miyako who also does Keyboards will sometimes tap a guitar solo with one hand while doing a keyboard solo with the other..... just ridiculous amounts of talent

As an East asian Metalhead that grew up and still live in Asia (most of the time), it is very important to know that the rules of making metal music in East Asia is very very different than what the west do, most East Asian Metal bands i grew up with (ie X-Japan, Dir En grey, Chthonic, Maximum The Hormone) has always try to be experimental, bands like X-Japan and Dir En Grey(well for their earlier works) could go one Epic speed or extreme metal song next to a sad and emo ballad, or bands like Sigh, MTH and Chthonic can be very experimental and progressive, with tons of elements from other genre or instrument being added. The rules are very different, but hey, we all love Metal, thats the important part.

I am really, really happy yall did this!! I mostly listen to Japanese metal and rock. Sooo happy you included Aldious and mentioned Doll$ Boxx!!! Surprised BandMaid and LadyBaby (current lineup) isn't on here. Something else unique with Japanese bands are Visual Kei metal bands too. Could totally do a segment on that as well. One of my favorite metal/rock bands is Yousei Teikoku. It's a female fronted band and they do the theme song for the anime, Mirai Nikki (Future Diary). Another band you should check out is Wagakki band. They blend traditional Japanese music with rock music so beautifully!! Lastly, some other Japanese metal bands to check out are Undead Corporation, Kissing the Mirror, obviously Dir en Grey, DIMLIM, Morrigan, Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas, Crystal Lake of course (new song adds a new sound to deathcore), Pentagon, Unlucky Morpheus (femalre fronted and violinist is female too) and I can name so many more.

I'm glad Doll$Boxx was mentioned! They're my favourite all-girl japanese metal band, even though they have a really dumb name. Fuki's clean vocals are soaring and haunting, and Hana's unclean vocals are so strong, and especially impressive when you look at her and can see a cute young woman. I recommend their song Take My Chance, it's what got me into them. The music video is pretty dope too.

The most interesting thing with DB IMO isn't that they are an explicit metal band, but how little fucks they give to adhering to genre convention. Take my Chance's ska-like breaks, whilst dripping pop and industrial over interlacing cleans and screams and full band harmonies... Yeesh.
And yes, Garcharic Spin (even if not metal) really deserve a mention. Insanely talented group (yes, I know DB is GC+Fuki :P)

I hoped for something bigger from Japan. Like the Visual Kei/J-rock scene, started with X Japan.
Spawned great bands like Dir en Grey (who eventually stopped the visual kei thing and went all experimental, alternative metal. And that band inspired most Japanese metalbands that came afterwards, like The GazettE, Sadie and more.

well Aldious is pretty big (though admittedly he reviewed one of their obscure albums, the band gained popularity immediately when Remi left the band and Re;NO replaced her on vocals in late 2012), in fact Aldious single highhandedly formed a new style of visual kei called "algura kei"(i think thats how its spelled)

I love the Valkylie mention, even though they were never a famous band. A lot of people don't quite realize just how long ladies have been playing metal in Japan. They've had women playing in metal bands as far back as the late 70s, and all-female bands since the early 80s. In the early 80s alone there were "heavy metal girl groups" like Show-Ya, Jet Maybe, Flying Vision, Vixen, Battle Axe, Carmilla, Ladia, Rose, so on and so forth. It's a really unique metal environment stretching back decades and still going strong.

I used to be of the camp that Baby Metal had no business in the metal genre, because they were created by some cash grabbing producer. After a few listens, they grew on me to the point that I went with my daughter to see them live. It blew my mind that over the PA system people were singing along to Pantera. The concert was super fun, well worth my time...
After that I decided, as long as you enjoy something more power to you, if you hate it, change the channel you're not forced to listen to it. I kinda have to admit that Baby Metal led me into more heavier metal bands. One the members likes Cattle Decapitation, so I listened and I haven't looked back since...

@@antoineroth2555 Alt-Idol pretty much means any group that uses the idol genre conventions but doesn't sound like your typical idol bubblegum pop. The groups tend to vary their sound a lot. Punk gets a lot play because BiS, the kinda of originators of the whole scene, had punk influences in the majority of their sound as well as having a indie punk philosophy. Though again they varied their sound quite a bit. Necronomidol and Broken By The Scream are probably the two groups that stick the closest to the metal genre but again they vary quite a bit.

Those chicks are great.
But if you want to dig more into japanese "weird" bands you can check Kokumaromilk, is an Experimental Gothic/Folk Power Metal band (one of the very few tags that Metallum has right). Then I'd suggest you start with: Rondo Of Nightmare (With Mischiefs of God Intro) Gives a good showcase for the musicians, followed by a Sue-Metal (lead singer) Solo performance.
      ruclips.net/video/QxYAcIyk2Co/видео.html
Then maybe Catch Me If You Can BABYMETAL BLACK NIGHT LEGEND DOOMSDAY, another good Kami-Band (translation: God-Band) intro showcase, and all the girls join in on the perform.
      ruclips.net/video/ng8U_j0gpLI/видео.html
And if you made it through those two wondering what else they can do, then check out this: Tales of The Destinies ~ THE ONE - English ver.

Japan has for sure a very unique style of metal music, but my totally favorite is YOUSEI TEIKOKU, since their early dark ambient records and "gothic lolita" albums to their more agressive works like "pax vesania" and the brand new "the age of villains" this band seems to get better and better everytime I listen to them, and their side band DENKARE is awesome too

The Valkylie-Valkyrie link you have mentioned is questionable as not single Valkylie musician played in Valkyrie. This is the error, on Metal Archives as well.
You should also mention Angel Kiss, Flying Vision, Jet Maybe, Velle Witch and Vixen - all japanese female groups from the 80s.
    Kinda mish-mash video, mate.

  • @beccashadwell1674

Dazzle Vision. Not all female, but their front woman is KILLER.
A few people have mentioned them already, but Exist Trace. Their old stuff is metal to the core. If you're looking for the good stuff, their albums Demented Show and Recreation Eve are your best bet. Around 2013, they experimented with lighter stuff and a lot of people wrote them off. But their recent releases, This Is Now and Royal Straight Magic, have given me hope. This Is Now has some heavier rock on it (aside from Neo-Japanese Heroine); it's on Spotify only though. Royal Straight Magic is more electronic-y but still rock. Also songs like Antique Doll, Raze, Signal, Twin Wings, Voice, Daybreak, Be Naked, Vangaurd, and Keiyaku. Also their albums True and Twin Gate are really good. Really, most of their recent stuff and older stuff is pretty good. Avoid anything from Spiral Daisakusen, Diamond, and World Maker unless you want jpop-y songs. But this is just my opinion. I really urge you to listen to some of their stuff; they're quite good when they don't try to pander to the mainstream tbh.

"Girl's rock" in general has a lot of traction in Japan today in a wide variety of genres, not just Metal. If you dip your toe into pop-rock, indie-rock, garage-rock, punk-rock, or any other sub-genre, there are Japanese all-girl bands doing some pretty great stuff.

Regarding the weird phenomenon of Baby Metal, I think the sound of metal does not have the same connotation in Japan as in the West. In the West, metal is not merely rebellious, it associates with Satanism and rejection of God (even if not overtly stated). Because Japan is (mostly) not Christian, metal is not seen as Satanic, just rebellious and very energetic. That's why it's not uncommon to hear metal in anime themes, in a way you would not hear for kids' cartoons in the West.

Other metal idol band I really recommend is Broken By The Scream. (4 singers + the band).
They have impressive vocalists. They are 4 but one does low growls and other does high screams. Add to that the clear vocals (that might remind you of j-pop), and excellent riffs and guitar solos.
This band is more on the heavy/metalcore side. Check them out on their official RUclips channel, their songs are super good.

Necronomidol have some really great sounds, I just find it a shame that the styles vary so much at least throughout their latest album. I'd prefer it if they split the "main branches" of sounds into 3 or even 4 different projects. I'd e.g. love more stuff with post rock influences like "psychopomp" but also the eurodance influences of "les tenebres sans visage".

Okay, I was expecting a strict focus on anti-idol specifically. But mixing it up to show just how broad female-fronted Japanese metal is, is a good choice. Gallhammer are a favorite of mine for sure. The whole idea was that they were Hellhammer if Hellhammer were a bunch of chicks. They fucking nailed that. They got that same Venom-with-doom-parts sound that Hellhammer had, but they're maybe even more unhinged in their playing and vocals. And they never put out a bad album.
