Making my soil from scratch really changed my life. I make a custom mix for pretty much every plant. Coconut coir, Volcanic Rock, charcoal, worm castings, orchid bark, perlite, sphagnhm moss, and tiny river stones are my favorite materials to work with.

Honestly, might be adding a bit too much. bark coir pearlite compost is much simpler and provides more or less the same or better benefit

    • @adamnagy4544

Its good one for sure, but a little bit overkill for regular housplants. You might seen or even use soil like this in terrariums, but the reason for that is you dont replace the soil in a terrarium. The terrarium soil needs to be as compounding resistant as possible. If you replant in every year or so, you could go with a much simpler, cheaper soil without any regret.

    • @retape101
      @retape101 Месяц назад +2

@siddharthpothini3887 this is just ingredients/pallet I use. The mixture is different for each plant and I don't use everything for each one lol for example I'll mix coco coir, Volcanic Rock, and perlite evenly mixed when I wanna make my succulent soil.

    • @retape101

@adamnagy4544 this is just ingredients/pallet I use for all plants and i dont use everything at once for each one. The mixture is different for each plant/place the plant is placed. "Good water, good light, good soil makes all the difference" in the words of Mr. Shefield himself. I also use a Zerowater filter and water conditioner for pretty much everything too haha overkill is the name of the game for me. I think it's more so having fun doing it feeling like a shaman (I have 219 babies on my planta app haha) also, I've saved A LOT of money since I've switched to making my own supplies. All of this stuff in bulk can make WAY more soil then having to buy multiple types (succulent, tropical, regular houseplant, flowers, etc.) It's easier and cheaper (for me) to just make it all from scratch 😎 plus having a much less chance of creepy crawlies makes life easier for me too (I put my own culture of springtails in almost all my plants to prevent mold, once again overkill lol)

The easiest and most fun solution for me has been Butterworts/Pinguicula plants. They are carnivorous plants with sticky dew (not the ones with little mouths). They trap and absorb any flying insects. They are super easy to grow, since they want permanently wet soil, which means never having to guess how much or when to water. They also have very pretty and abundant flowers (some of mine never stop flowering). I just have a few nestled between groups of plants and I can count the amount of gnats I've seen flying around in a year time on one hand. Notes on care: they prefer distilled water which is available in most grocery stores (also used for clothes irons), higher humidity gives them more dew, they like sunlight. Drosera/sundew plants function basically the same. They are slightly less effective for small gnats but do look spectacular especially when they have big dew droplets which are gorgeous (again: high humidity). Hope anyone with flying insects try them out!

If you’re reusing dirt and plan on reconstituting it, line a pan with foil, dump the dirt in preferably dry and bake it at 250F for 20 minutes. This sterilizes it killing nats and eggs.

I bought a bag of soil with the holes once and I left it sitting a few weeks before I was ready to repot and had fungus gnats flying around and up my nose in my eyes, I didn’t know what or where they came from until my granddaughter and I opened the bag and she saw a swarm of them coming out of the bag the soil was in, by this time it was winter and I threw the whole bag out in the snow. This spring i had a ridiculous problem with the gnats. I went on a literal hunt for the mosquito bits. The last store said they had 4. I got an employee to pull the ladder and get it from the overstock. The soil i used was for container gardening and the plants were tropical (yuca, banana), so i couldn't put them outside until it was warmer. The bits saved my sanity.

I kept my chunky mix simple with coco coir, orchid bark and pumice at different ratios depending on the plant. Worm castings are great; however, they attract fungus nats as well. As soon as switched to slow release fertilizer + diluted Dyno-Grow (each watering) it made a huge difference with pests.

    @Chris-op7yt Месяц назад +5

mis-attribution error. fungus gnats only eat already rotting material. the roots of your plant rotted and only then got eaten by the gnats. it's the mix that's still a problem but typically not because it contains fungus gnat eggs--which can occasionally happen in transit--but because the mix readily rots and holds too much water. i found out the hard way that you can have zero fungus gnats and still have roots rot away, blissfully unaware of the problem until the plant goes into quick decline after growing well. it happens with fine media that does not rot, but the media still compacts too much and holds too much water.
i've changed over to almost entirely 1-7mm pumice, with only some peat, for vigorous plants with fine roots. same pumice with zero organic matter for aroids. 7-20mm pumice only for orchids. and also this larger pumice but with some chunky coir for large pots with monstera and coir for moss poles.
similarly re-potted outside pot plants to almost entirely either the finer or the larger pumice, with some coir and sand for plants that dont mind extra moisture, and pumice alone where additional drainage needed. previously all the outside pot plants contained mostly organic matter, and almost always it went either hydrophobic or the other way, soggy. there's just no way to see this until you re-pot. now with almost all pumice and sand mixes for outdoor pot plants, it should be almost impossible to not provide the required water and air to roots of those plants. organic matter is way over-rated as potting medium and also over-rated as garden soil additive. causes more problems than any benefits in long run.

What about neem oil? I used it for aphids and it worked. It reduced gnats population as well, and it's cheap. Pretty funny to see neem oil for hair on amazon and then the reviews only talk about pest control. Only tip i can give is to watch out when spraying the leaves. Some black spots appeared in my basil saplings and i removed those at the time. Don't know if the oil held moisture against the leaves or something else, but in theory you should just spray the soil.

@ShefieldMadePlants: Thank you for this. I did not know this about soil mixes! Omg...
Mini-Story: I always had more than 100 orchids and 40+ houseplants, including Calatheas, in my house. I never had any issues with gnats. Even when I introduced them on my aquarium woods for a fungus-free decor, I had no problems. I realized I had been lucky to buy good soil and orchid media for over 20 years.
Last February, I bought a soil that had many holes on the side and was labeled "Premium" on both the front and back. HA! From March to mid-July, I was battling gnats 24/7! I couldn't watch TV, eat cereal, or make a salad without them diving onto the leaves, into our beverages, and even inside the toilet seat. When you have a serious gnat issue, you miss simple things like yawning, taking big breaths, drinking from a glass without a lid, or leaving your food unattended for a few minutes to answer a phone call. You suddenly find yourself slapping your own cheeks because something is crawling on you, passing in front of your face, or even trying to climb inside your nose. These little monsters would fly at any light source at night, including my tablet screen while I was trying to sleep, often with 4-5 gnats running around. It was really bad, and I wish no one else experiences the same. Be careful of the soil you bring into your home!
I tried the huge yellow sticky cards they sell for trees. After a week, the yellow color was completely covered by a gray carpet of dead gnats, but the gnat population wasn't decreasing at all! I tried every remedy out there. I even considered Sheffield's nematode solution, but I couldn't order it at my location. In the end, I had to throw out my three awesome HUGE Calatheas, their pots, and the rest of the soil mix. Now, one month later, I am gnat-free again.

I place a banana peel in a gallon zip top open bag to attract the nats that apparently come into the house on the fruit from the store or market. The nats inside the bag are captured by pulling the top together, rolling, closing and zipping the bag. I walk them in the bag 300 feet away and empty the contents incuding the nats. (Somtimes I'll just place the closed bag in the dumpster). Then I retrieve the banana peels and repeat the process. I place the open gallon bag containing the old used peels, fresh peels added, or both peels back on the shelf above the commode and repeat the process daily.

Last week I told the woman that works there I have fungus gnats she asked me if I use miracle grow soils and that that brand has gnat eggs and of course that was the brand I was using. Miracle grow does not sterilize their soil. Unless you want to repot all your plants she said to put one tsp of dawn dish soap in a spray bottle with water and spray the soil everytime after I water the plants and it takes a few months to get them gone but that is what she said to do. Calatheas do not do this re pot those. She said it is safe.

I live in California. I bought several bags of potting soil and spread it liberally over a large outdoor planter, hoping to give it a spring boost. Within two weeks, a very nasty weed called VETCH sprang up throughout the planter! It took me three YEARS to finally pull out the last of it. We're advised to put bags of mulch, potting soil, etc., in the hot sun for two weeks before using, to kill any insects and weed seeds. That didn't work! So the next time, I bought recycled compost from the city recycle plant. Even worse! Got yards of compost full of obnoxious weeds, including Star Thistle, crab grass and worst of all - SPURGE! OMG! But as part of the treatment, I covered the plant in a plastic bag to keep the gnats from spreading to my other plants. It took months but it seems keeping the population enclosed like that made them die out. And the plant is still alive and well - I didn't need to water it during that time since the bag was keeping the humidity stable 😁

I've finally managed to get on top of this. Not had any issues with gnats this year.
I've oven cooked on a low temperature any compost intended for the house. Two big foil roasting trays fills a large box (the type you used to store your mixes in) with ready to use sterilised compost. Enough to last for several months worth of repottings.
I've used sticky traps on pots to deal with a few that came in on new plants. Haven't spotted any since.
I've also avoided buying new plants from shops and only used online order cuttings so they've got no soil with them.
I'm disappointed with the quality of bagged peat free though. So I may in future purchase my own coconut coir and mix it with bagged worm castings, then use that to mix up with perlite/bark etc.
I really enjoy making my own mixes.
I wonder if gnats take up residence in worm castings? Or are they dry? 😮

Ever since I got one of those blue light plug in things with a sticky board on it, (I got it from amazon I think it was called safer home, and i got generic refill sticky boards for less on there too)a few months ago the population continues to dwindle. Even my carnivorous plants aren't catching many anymore!
I'm learning no matter where I buy my ingredients for my soil, they can always come infested with something. The last bag of bark I bought had soil mites in them. I've gotten soil ingredients with fungus gnats, mold/fungi, tiny bark beetles.
My remedy is to soak it in hydrogen peroxide 1:1 with water, or physan 20, then dry it in the oven and that just about takes care of everything, bugs die, spores, molds, viruses, etc, and my soil is totally sanitized. I know some dont like to make soil sterile but my plants are doing better than when the soil is infested with bugs or mold, and generally, I'm having fewer plant issues overall.

All hardware stores, department stores, and grocery stores sale plants with these knats already in the soil. Perhaps an electronic bug zapper and some yellow sticky traps. I've never had a problem with them destroying my plants or stunting their growth. I keep my plants in separate rooms, and the knats don't seem to venture out of them. If I have plants in the kitchen or living room, I keep them directly in water. As long as the critters don't venture out of their respective habitat, I am grateful for their ability to pollinate and aerate the soil. As long as I keep a bug zapper and some yellow sticky traps, they don't seem to bother me as they die in a balanced fashion.

    Now I know why.
The post mortem revealed that all the plants has mysteriously lost all their roots. I didn't understand at the time. Now I get it.
I won't be buying that again.

I had a real problem with Fungus Gnats, then found an amazing solution. I used 2 x Tablespoon of Neem Oil, 1/2 tablespoon of detergent, in 10 litres of water. I socked each plant with it and within 2 weeks, they were all gone.
However, I have just watched you video and I have that SOIL!! I will have to get some new stuff.

I saw gnats going through my window screens and inside the house right into my plants pots. I agree that nematodes and BTI are the most effective ways to eliminate them especially since they are coming from the outside. Havent tried it yet though, its a bit expensive and hard to find where I live. I also tried carnivore plants like butterworts but it died soon after i brought it home. Probably not very effective but it was pretty cool.

I’m in the States, the BTI drops are great! I add it to my watering can every time I water my plants. I found mine at the pet store in the area for koi ponds. I thought I was going to have to order some Mosquito bits or BTI drops online! So far so good. This is my first year using it. I also use the diatomaceous earth and neem oil spray.

I only have 9 plants… and a ficus tree that for a couple years has been very happy indoors (I’m in an upper apartment so…)
Should I just completely repot everything and ditch as much of the old soil as possible?
Or will the eggs and larvae be prevalent enough in the roots, and residual soil there, to make that effort meaningless?
I started before video ended… the worms sound good. Maybe try both?

A year later, I decided to repot with totally different soil and magically all the gnats went away
And then the next time I went to repot I did the same stupid thing again and bought a bag of soil with little holes in it… And guess what?

Don't be too upset over not being able to get Mosquito Bits!! I tried it and now half my plants are dieing!! Mr Sheffield, what do I do? My beloved Elgergrass is slowing dieing! It's gotten so sickly looking and it's just about lost all the purple color from the back of the leaves! The leaves are all curling around the long edges! Is there anything I can do to save this at this point or do I say my good byes and look for another? I am heart broken over this one!!
