This feeling, when for the first time pinguin "historical video" is about a map you actually played from valve adding it to the game, up until they removed it. Weird to say the least.
My favourite part about insertion2 was that it finally added a properly modern feeling setting to CS. Although other maps may be set in modern cities like overpass or vertigo, they're all essentially just deliberately designed and perfected layouts with every corner optimized for the ideal CS tournament experience, and would pose no difference if they were all dev-textured and had no lore. Insertion2 on the other hand had buildings placed as if it were an actual (yet tiny) town; alleyways, tight staircases, open plan offices with cubicles, believable streets and building windows.. It brought that true "SWAT" feeling to CS where the map was so big yet so compact that you had to make use of corner-checking intuition instead of memorized sightlines to count through after each corner. A map like Insertion 2 can't stay in CS for long as it must not get memorized, it must stay fresh and it must stay unknown, the entire premise of it is unpredictability and the best way to win is to outsmart instead of outplay, it's the perfect opposite to the entire philosophy of CS.
yea, insertion felt real. so real, but still i think it had some pretty well thought-out geometry for balanced gameplay long term. i guess we'll never know...
not to mention how the whole thing is based on suburban sweden, being able to point at half of the things in the map and say "i know a place within 2km that looks just like that" or for the supermarket "nah that brand is bad, i like the one on this shelf much more" is very funny
I don’t think people who aren’t Swedish can grasp the sheer detail here. It’s a picture perfect recreation of a place I think we’ve all been to but can’t place on a map. It feels exactly like the centre of a small town or suburb surrounding Stockholm. Many (if not all) of the products in the supermarket are named as puns based off real life brands here.

Insertion2 had THE BEST movement opportunities out of any cs map ever. I think it even beats out vanilla movements on DZ maps. There's so many unique jumps that range from quite simple strafes to literal multi jumpbugs that are borderline impossible to hit consistently.
- Insertion 2 fixes hostage mode in a simple way: The hostage rescue IS NOT in CT spawn. Terrorists can rush hostage rescue at the start of the round. Both early, mid and late game, rescue zone is a place where fighting happnes. You fight for map control, not just for spawn or hostage control. - Spawn locations have specific uses. The far away CT spawns give wide angles of attack, but give Ts more time to prepare. Faster spawns pressure Ts more, but offer less wide angles of attack. - The randomized hostage spawns are pretty stupid. Hostage in the pizzeria is always hardest to defend (and most fun), while the hostage in the office building is nearly impossible to rescue (and kind of boring). Office having a hostage spawn is stupid anyway, Office is a great outlook post and that should be it's only use in the map. - Insertion 2, for all intents and purposes, plays like Ghost Recon multiplayer more than Counter-Strike. That's why it feels so good. And it absolutely is competitive. In short, we shouldn't wait for Insertion 3 or make a spiritual successor. We just need Ghost Recon 2.
Imagine playing D2 but the sites would be randomized, that's how the hostage spawn feels like. I'm baffled this crap still exists in hostage game mode. Another insane thing that happens in hostage mode: If you play a casual game in D2 (or any defuse map), you get a free defuse kit. In hostage mode, YOU DON'T EVEN GET A DEF KIT AS CT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is madness !!! wtf is valve doing there? wnking? It's not even about CS2 here, the fact that this "feature" was in csgo too and no one complained about it is madness !!! and can we have some maps please? Insertion 1/2 , assault (please add more entries in the building) , Militia (please, but the T spawns back a little bit so that CT have a chance to contest the yard!!)... fk, even agency at this point would be an OK addition... just give us sometihng

When Insertion 1 came out during the Operation Breakout, I thought it was going to start a whole new sub-genre of maps. I want more unique maps like them.
Not that many people care, btu in the movement community this map was played a bunch to hit some of the most unique clips the community will ever see. Skyboxes were abused and gotten on top of on the big buildings, and the pure size of the map allowed for some awesome shots.
yessss I fucking love insertion 2, it addresses hostage mode's inherent balance issues by removing the T's defensive positions as a plus, and forces them to spread themselves thin and use their superior weaponry as a tool rather than just having better guns and better positions
and people still wonder why this is my fav map to this day. i miss it so much i loved playing it on casual on the big map with 20 players it was so fun
Insertion2 actually made hostage rescue fun + somewhat viable This is the same reason why Lake was the most popular wingman map (by queue time at least) It was so much more open and wasn't just a series of corridors =) I like to think people enjoyed its different gameplay loop. It kept all the weird 2012 quirks of maps because it was made then, but stayed popular (look up the tree boost) I hope you make a video on lake one day, and also the parappa 2 music is blissful
me and my friends played it everyday for a week before cs2 dropped and my heart sank when you said there is no insertion 3. really hope some awesome casual maps comeback to cs in the future.
Insertion 1 also played great on casual imo, more roamers and action around other parts of the map. I cant recall if Insertion 2 was ever even in the casual map pool.
I seem to remember a map from the CS 1.6 days called "Survivor", or wait, that was a bomb defusal map, but somehow, that's another good open-world map that pushed the original HL engine to its limits, imho.
both insertion maps are a beautiful example of innovative designs, honestly both maps should be permanently in game it actually makes hostage mode fun and not Terro sided
I think that one thing that the hostage game mode adds to this map is the variance that you don't get with defuse. Because the hostages can spawn in a number of different buildings it combines with the different spawn points to create so many variations in how a round plays out that you always get something fresh no matter how many times you play the map. As someone who loves things in CS that deviate from the norm, this was one of my favorite maps to play on at the time, I'm glad you're highlighting it
In my opinion, Apollo was a great and mostly balanced hostage map. It allowed combat across a larger area of the map, and the atmosphere is great, based on the Kennedy Space Center in Orlando. I have fond memories with that one.
Legitimately such a masterpiece of a map. People always say that maps which are this open can't work in cs, but the guy who made this made it work. So fun and unique.
playing 5v5's with my friends on this map was funny as hell. and this map is so well made so many cool spots to hide/snipe from. even in the forest there is a fallen down tree which u can climb on to get a crazy sniper spot. or in the store you can get up over the ceiling tiles from the toilet room or on of the freezer.
My favorite way to play this map was to run a custom game with my friends and just play hide and seek, it was so big that it was rare to see people use the same hiding spots
Always loved how Insertion2 looked. Actually realistic and not just a 3 lane arena decorated like a place. Also, "...it might feel something like R6:Siege" Funnily enough, last year I released a House remake for CS:GO, attempting to recreate it as close as possible as Siege within the realm of CS and Source 1. It's still on the workshop and I uploaded a vid here on YT, decent feedback on it too. I'm currently working on fully remastering it for CS2 with more accuracy and detail etc. Siege style / open-ended maps with CS mechanics works pretty well if done right imo

As a Swede I also have to point out something which might get lost on non-Swedes: This map might be the most hyper-realistic recreation of what Sweden looks like in a video game, ever. It's actually insane. All the brands you see are parodies of real brands made in the same style as real Swedish brands. Even going as far as the individual products in the grocery store, walking around with my friends we were going "oh, there's the 'wasa' rye bread but it's called 'waho' instead" or something similar. The grocery store, "co-op" is a parody on the actual chain of grocery stores, "Coop", with almost exactly the same logo. It's absolutely insane.
This was based on the small town in Stockholm county called Kallhäll. If you are facing the centrum with the train station in the back, going left will eventually lead you to Stäket. In between are daycares, a school called Kolarängen, and people of course live here. If you instead go right, you will eventually have to take right again and you will shortly end up in the town Jakobsberg, which at least used to be a great place to get robbed and/or beaten. From Järfälla you have fun celebrities like Kenta Gustafsson and Mikael Persbrandt. Both, sadly, know for using drugs which is part of the staple diet for a lot of people in Järfälla. The train station in Kallhäll looks awfully different now. In fact, to me, it looks awful
Damn i wish i could play this map so much! Back in my source days i played a shitton of office. Ive always liked hostage rescue. Back in those days people weren't worried about competitive viability from a high level gameplay standpoint. Games were also not 5v5 back then, typically. But a map like insertion 2 just seems like such a breath of fresh air. And it might actually be better suited to the 10v10 matches in casual. Id love for this to be added to the hostage group and in comp (not premier, regular comp)
I miss that era that you mentioned when players would just go into the map and explore. I love both of these maps. And it'll be very cool to have more maps like these, or even the crazier stuff like BLAHHH, mg_rota_derp etc
Insertion 2 was a game changer when it was released. It brought a unique gameplay and added a twist on how to play hostage rescue mode. Honestly this makes me miss CSGO. Wish Valve could have kept it for the oldies to keep playing classic maps like Insertion 1 and 2.
I love watching source game videos, especially ones that talk about map design or gameplay balance. It really disheartens me to see gambling and gambling adjacent ads run on them.
I loved insertion 2. It finally made hostage mode fun to play. And it wasn't all T sided. I hope it can be ported to source 2 and come back on officials servers again but I don't think that's gonna happen sadly. One of the best map ever I have played truely.
Valve’s maps do have weird stuff where it seems like you should be able to jump out of levels yet can’t. This is a recent phenomenon though, or at least began to be super common in GO. For the first ~half of CS’s existence, a lot of maps actually had big coliseum walls to keep players from guessing where they can and can’t go, and a lot of the time if there was weird map geometry you could just climb it, it didn’t indicate an invisible wall. Really wish that after all this “what you see is what you get” fanfare, we actually could see the level we’re playing on again.

As a swede i really respect the detail. Feels like they just took many average swedish settings and put it in a map, with all the fitting detail.

As someone who played cs from 2015-2017 and again 2022-2024 this is probably the map I am most upset about missing out on.

I miss insertion 2 so much it was my favourite map, along with extraction and breach and I hope they add them back in cs2
I love watching source game videos, especially ones that talk about map design or gameplay balance. It really disheartens me to see gambling and gambling adjacent ads run on them.
I loved insertion 2. It finally made hostage mode fun to play. And it wasn't all T sided. I hope it can be ported to source 2 and come back on officials servers again but I don't think that's gonna happen sadly. One of the best map ever I have played truely.

Valve’s maps do have weird stuff where it seems like you should be able to jump out of levels yet can’t. This is a recent phenomenon though, or at least began to be super common in GO. For the first ~half of CS’s existence, a lot of maps actually had big coliseum walls to keep players from guessing where they can and can’t go, and a lot of the time if there was weird map geometry you could just climb it, it didn’t indicate an invisible wall.
Really wish that after all this “what you see is what you get” fanfare, we actually could see the level we’re playing on again.
I remember when the map was deleted and i returned to Mirage, i realized how little options of where to go or what to do are on the regular maps.
