- I booted up Book 2. Well if the title is any indication, I LOVE Mystery of the Emblem. I beat it in 3 days. I enjoyed nearly every moment I played of it and I could not stop playing. It just had to be done. It almost didn't make sense.
But TL;DW, its a fantastic game which despite some admittedly archaic and clunky ways of doing some things... is refreshingly simple and intuitive, yet challenging and rewarding. In this review, I'm going to explain why i loved the game so much.

Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem[a] is a tactical role-playing video game developed by Intelligent Systems, and published by Nintendo for the Super Famicom home video game console in 1994. It is the third installment of the Fire Emblem series,[1][2] and the first to be developed for the Super Famicom.
The story is divided into two parts: the first part is a remake of Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, while the second is an original story acting as a sequel to the first game. After defeating the sorcerer Gharnef and the Dark Dragon Medeus, peace is restored to Archanea and Marth restores his kingdom. His ally Hardin ascends to the throne of Archanea, but begins hostile military expansion across the continent, forcing Marth to confront his old friend and the force driving him. Gameplay follows the traditional Fire Emblem system of tactical battles taking place on grid-based maps.
Mystery of the Emblem began development in 1992 during the production of Fire Emblem Gaiden. The staff from previous entries, including series creator Shouzou Kaga and composer Yuka Tsujiyoko, returned to their respective roles. While originally conceived as two separate projects, the team eventually merged the proposed remake of Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light with the original story content of Mystery of the Emblem. The gameplay, which had veered away from the first game's tactical RPG routes in Gaiden, returned to its more traditional stance. The difficulty was lowered to encourage new players to try the series.
The game has been positively received by video game journalists; much praise went to its gameplay refinements and technical quality. It also set the best first-week sales for the series until Fire Emblem Awakening in 2012, and with 776,338 units by 2002 was the best-selling title in the series to that date. A derivative title for the Satellaview, BS Fire Emblem, was released during 1997. A full remake for the Nintendo DS, Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem, was released in 2010. In 2017, it was rereleased in Japan as part of the Japanese retailer versions of Classic SNES Edition.

I just realized while watching this video that I've never actually seen Mystery of the Emblem gameplay before.
Same, I always thought it was an nes game before this
Weenkerz Mystery is the SNES fire emblem and a remake of FE1 which IS a nes game
I’ve seen gameplay for every fire emblem game except shadows of Valentia
"I kinda like Mystery of the Emblem more than Genealogy of the Holy War and Thracia."
Why would you say something so controversial yet so brave?
It’s always felt like Ghast has been incredibly ambivalent towards Jugdral, whether it’s for hipster reasons or any other number of things.
Tuskoub or maybe he just enjoys mystery of the emblem over Fe4-5
@@tuskoub coming from the guy that Enjoys Gaiden as his favorite and still contemplates whether it beats Echoes or not, Ghast has Questionable but respectful taste.

My first favorite FE. One thing I'll add about the dismount feature is that it forced me to train up an armor unit, something I would never otherwise do, because Gradivus can't be used on indoor maps otherwise. This is a good thing; I appreciate game mechanics that require team breadth.
I loved book 1 of this game, but I cant lie, that Chapter 2 of Book 2 made me think I sucked at Fire Emblem or something so I just dropped the game. Nice to know that it does get better.
But what r the mystery’s of the emblem
Your mother laughing out loud.

actual good opinion detected
@@donaldtrump2728 nah, fe3 is the best in the series, don't @ me
Ok
I do really like warren but I also am a big castor fan so it is tough choosing who to use. That is one reason I like fe12 because I can reclass one since I don’t feel like I need multiple bow users most of the time. I go back and forth on wether I like fe3 or 12 better but I do enjoy both. I think fe3 is a more tight game but I do like having all the fe1 units return in fe12. The large amount of difficulty options in fe12 is nice too. The thing that might put fe3 over the edge though is Bantu is actually good.
It's funny that 3rd and 4th were my first FE lol
Love to see a fan of FE3. I have been stating how awesome it is and at most I get an okay, sure whatever and at worst berated for being out of touch. Seeing the comments, either the fans have found an outlet to share their love for the game or they are just following a crowd.
Great Video!
Turns out I'm also replaying FE3 using a restricted cast though have started with book 1 for perspective (my first impression was "where are the Vulnerary?"). It's easy to forget a lot of the small gameplay things like how swords generally have 4 less weight than lances so dismounting can be akin to -2DMG, +4AS for Cavaliers but when they become Paladins this is +1AS instead (at least until they cap speed while dismounted).
If you can't wait for a new translation RobertTheSable recently put out a patch. The script is still based on the Quirino patch which was based on the VincentASM one from a long time ago (which I believe was Japanese > Chinese > English) but it's nice to see people working on FE3 and making various small fixes over like 12 years (no longer does the ending crash for instance).
I have a Super Famicom and a boxed copy of FE3 and I beat it, it’s pretty cool. I like FE12 more but the original is still great too but I really like FE4, 5, and 12 a lot, however I will admit that FE3 is a lot more visually pleasing
The New Mystery of the Emblem character endcard formula:
"After the war, [character] vanished, never to be seen again. History knows nothing about what happened to them afterward."
or
"[Character] became a knight/joined a convent."
I played it about half a year ago as part of my marathon of the whole series. I... liked it better than Dark Dragon, but not much more. The enemy AI in a lot of maps is shockingly simplistic and unaggressive, and the growth boosting items just frustrate my perfectionist soul due to me wanting to get as much exp on units who have them as possible (which is easy to do because, again, most enemies for a shocking portion of the game wait to be approached before they attack, so funneling whole maps into a single character is trivial). Most of what I appreciated about it was how it upgraded most QOL features compared to Gaiden and to a much greater extent Dark Dragon, but then later games in the series made those improvements more dated.
"Liberation" is fucking fire though. Love that song with all my heart.
Fire Emblem 3 is my 9th favorite game in the series. It's strange how I like Book 1 more than Shadow Dragon.
I wonder why this didn't get translated and ported instead of FE1. Even though I'll be getting FE1 on the Switch I would have very much preferred a FE3 port .
I have finished 8 fire emblems. With fire emblem 3 book 2 i'm stuck at level 5..
Even now FE3 is one of the most stunning FE games, art-style wise, and just a joy to both watch and play as a result. Too bad it's so clunky compared to 4+5 in general, not just trading but animation selection, unit menus, etc. Well not as clunky as FE1 was. Either way you can see why this game was so popular in Japan and held the best-selling title for so long.
My first fire emblem Game !
You know I'm not gonna argue any points but... Why did you have to bring dabbing Caeda into the world?
I'll give the game another shot for sure, but I'd rather wait for a new and improved translation. I find it odd that FE12 has had a proper translation since, like, 2013, yet FE3's latest translation still uses all kinds of pre-Shadow Dragon terms and names.
I may like FE 4 or 5 little more.......but I like playing FE3 a lot more, I don't know how to explain it, 3 its so damn addicting..... I like it more than New Mystery lol
This honestly looks really fun espacially the maps, I'm interested! I only played FE: SD last year & kinda liked it, now I want to play this but then I feel the remake for the DS should be better? I don't know but 1 day I might just go for New Mystery.
Great video as always :)
No mention of infinitely spawning playable Rena in ch.14. 0/10 video.

Warren 2021? I'm in
If you wanna get into New Mystery of the Emblem one day, I highly recommend the fantranslation (already finished one) from ChrisBlue aka HeartHero (one guy!) who very much appreciates this game and sees it as oen of the hidden gems/best titles in the series because of its content. He updated his 2015 translation of the game to fit the names with what FEH made for them in the localized version and its a very solid translation. He also doesnt get much credit for that translation sadly so giving him a shoutout would be pretty dope once you get to that game! :)
New Mystery of the Emblem is an amazing game and one of my personal favorites in the series, this video has given me a reason to play the original at some point in the future.
Me too.
#Warren2020
i liked FE3 too, but i hated chapter 19
That chapter is awful. I just charged then warped marth to the throne. Only way to deal with the chapter while not going insane. Medeus is also ridiculous, didn't help that my Marth got one shot and I had to use another strategy.
@@PurpleRupees chapter 19 is the Pales outside chapter
I thought this video was about bs archanea saga.
B-but what about new mystery?
I love this old translation patch. "Thief 500 had. Katua 500 took."
Is it the old patch though? Recent patches that I keep finding still have Caeda as "Shiida", heck, the font leaves barely any room for any text. Dolhr is Doluah or something, Archanea is Akania or something too. I don't believe there's a really clean, perfect patch yet for this game. I wanna play it but this bothers me too much... And I don't wanna play FE12 because Kris and also because I've beaten that one already, I haven't finished FE3 yet.
@@2figs4u Yeah, there have been patches by Quirino and RobertTheSable that update the names to their post-Shadow Dragon ones and correct some errors.

YEEESSSS FE3 GANGGGGG
OG Mystery is my absolute favorite in the series, and you’ve done it soooo much justice. One more thing I want to mention is that 1-2 range was nerfed in this game. Javelins have 20 weight, meaning that you can never double with them. Hand axes are only present on your slower axe users in Book 1 and Levin Swords deal constant damage. This prevents you from throwing your most powerful Paladin into a hoard of enemies and wiping them out in one turn. Meaning that you can really only do this strat with dodgy mages or Linde’s Nosferatu, but the former is risky while the latter forces you to expend a lot of uses of one of the more powerful tomes in the game. It solves one of FE’s problems of having swords be so objectively worse than other weapon types. On that note, I also think that the absence of the weapon triangle helps the gameplay, as the different weapon types are already balanced by things like weight, hit, and the types of classes that can use them. You can’t just throw your Mercenary into a hoard of axe users and expect them to dodge every attack anymore, something I really appreciate.
Yeah my lazy strat in Book 1 was to throw Oguma and Navarre into an axe group and watch them clean house. Hero crit animations were pretty cool for SNES graphics
I even think that the linde nosferatu is balanced because of how much you have to train her and give her stat boosters to get her strong enough to take every enemy. If you're playing fast or without star shards, it isn't a viable thing.
I agree with you so much. I think that fe3 is one of the most balanced games in the series. Out of the 40 something characters you get, I always use like 25-30 characters per playthrough. Everyone can fill a niche
@@hairyballs089 you get Linde super early though and shards
I'm still in disbelief how they straight up made a remake of FE1 AND a sequel to it for one game. FE3 is really damn good as a continuation of Marths tale and ( apart from a few awful ones) it shows how they started to nail down the map design, I mean compare it to FE1 and Gaiden.
>apart from a few awful ones
aka chapter 3 and chapter 11
for the uninitiated, chapter 3 is an overly large map that, if you want to recruit everyone possible in the game, you retty much have to curcle around the entire map, barely having to fight anything for like, 5-10 turns of it to get the the village with Julian in it, and them make sure you don't accidentally delete mathis since he is idiot, then recruit him with Julian
and chapter 11 is the second desert map of the game, and it is *literally all desert tiles*
You can see units movememt range
@@gypsysprite4824 i hated the long range party of chapter 19
Finally, someone else who likes FE3. I always talk about how it has the best javelin balance just to hear everybody say "FE3 sux lol"
Absolute truth about the javs man
Busted Tiki is pretty fun too, ngl. I do like the 2 inventory system and weapon level system too, those are great.
Are there really people saying Mystery of the Emblem sucks ? I consider it to be the "Ocarina of Time" of Fire Emblem, so that surprises me.
Nyrélhos Tylba It's mostly on discord, go on pretty much any FEtuber server and you'll see what I mean
Ah, we’re talking about the most niche fire emblem game
Archanea Saga for the BS famicom
FE3 is personally in my Top 3 of the entire series. Thank you for highlighting it. I feel like if you look at all the big Fire Emblem RUclipsrs, FE3 is sorta the forgotten game. I’m also with you on the game’s difficulty. It really hits a sweet spot. Hopefully this video inspires more people to play it. It’s a great game.
Honestly this is kind of exactly how I feel about Thracia, every moment is memorable and any unit is useable in my experience! I really hope this video does well for you, because it’s one of my favorites now! This is absolutely fantastic!
AW HELL YEAH! FE3 is so underrated it hurts. Easily my favourite in the series.
I'd love it if Nintendo just released a Fire Emblem collection for 70$ on Switch. Put everything before FE6 on it. Maybe add the GBA games cuz we all know they would fit.
FE3's story is actually easy to follow.
It's just FE12 without Kris.
And prologue characters
or the weapon triangle which was afaik first introduced in FE4.
Doesn't that automatically make fe 3's story better than fe 12's or something lile that?
@@leemeyer9395 Yes definitely. Kris scenes make my brain melt.
But when will he play Fire Emblem Tokyo Mirage Sessions?

Well I love Genealogy (haven't played Thracia) so I should probably play this at some point.
I see the whiteboard in the back
Any chance of sharing the workout routine 🤔
I actually beat Book 1 last week and I’m on Ch. 3 of Book 2 (I’ve been rather busy), and it’s honestly easily one of the better FE games imo
Fe3’s story isn’t even bad by any standards, too bad people judge fe3 based on new mystery and shadow dragon
When I'm to lazy to reset for a unit dying:-
The way that KAGA intended
FE3 was one of my first games, It's right up there with Binding Blade, PoR and Thracia on my Top-Tier for the series.
Interesting. I honestly never hear anyone bring up Fire Emblem 3 in most discussions, so this was an interesting watch for me.
Nice video Ghast!
I've never heard Catria pronounced as Kay-tree-ah lol
Glad to see another person enlightened by the greatness that is Mystery of the Emblem--by far the best entry in the series! Awesome video!
I'll play it if someone makes a translation that uses the US Shadow Dragon names. The closest one to that uses EU names instead.
I agree with this take genealogy is overrated mystery is epic
it really is tho
@@donaldtrump2728 FE4 isnt overrated, stop misusing that term. It is considered still a hidden gem in compare to modern FE titles which are the more "overrated ones" (despite FE Echoes & Three houses). FE4 is for oldschool FE fans overtalked/overpopular in contrast to the other games, and even hardcore FE4 fans have issues with the game, the reason why FE4 is remembered is its story and its unique spin on the map/chapter formula, even if they can be too much in terms of size.
@@Evilriku13 not gonna say FE4 is overrated since i never played the game but i can't tell u how many times FE4 was mentioned by the FE fandom(especially the elitists). it's huge, not as big as some of the modern FE games but still pretty popular nonetheless.
FE3 really made the series take off in Japan, glad to see it get some recognition in the west
Thanks for making this video Ghast. I also had such a blast playing through FE3 Book 1&2 several years ago. Like you said, it was highly engaging from start to finish and ridiculously fun to customize units using the star shards. I fell in love with Julian, the thief with insane combat utility, by playing these games. They were retro in just the way I remembered playing games on an old CRT in the attic as a kid. No one has really sung its praises recently, which I assume is because people, even FE fans, gloss over it in favor of the remakes. Have you played book 1? If so, what did you think of it?
Honestly, the Warren love is why I'm here.
I've played and I love it!! I have a UK repro copy of it for the Snes. And it's dope!! But it sure has it's hair pulling moments especially the Minerva chapter dealing with her brother...

I love this game, my second favorite beneath Thracia (which I consider a near perfect masterpiece). I love the customization and the trading/inventory was incredibly nice for me, seeing as I had just come off of fe1 (which was fun, but mainly for using meme characters). I really like the star shards, dismounting, and, most importantly, low caps and powerful statboosters. Due to this, i could use homies like cord and darros (and of course, Warren). This is another thing that i loved from fe5, where i could use units i loved and still succeed.
TL:DR, I love fe3 and 5 for similar things, but also differences, being fe5’s story and thematic/emotions and fe3’s world, characters, and music/animations.
"I kinda like Mystery of the Emblem more than Geneology or Thracia"
I fucking wonder why! I have yet to finish any of those, but my experience with GotHW makes me quite a lot more sympathetic to the simplicity of MotE.
I just played both books last month. It's actually surprising that the animations and dialogue (mostly in Book 2) still hold up well, and the supply management is actually as good as it is nowadays, but I find some parts a bit dated (Cavaliers and Pegasus Units break the game, but having to constantly change their weapons inside buildings can be a bit of a hussle).
And the music is REALLY good.
The only thing that ever made me annoyed about the DS remake of Shadow Dragon was the art style. I dont know what they were thinking with that. Going back to play it was fun - good game - but just nothing really sticks out !
Mystery of the emblem is super popular in Japan though
I played it as well this pandemic. It was awesome. For context i started on fe4 first and then started fe12 still haven't finished fe4 finished 12
Any game taking place in Archanea is pretty far outside of my knowledge. Interesting video!
I see you're a Warren for VP guy Ghast, and from Canada no less!
FE3 is still quite popular in Japan, as you can probably imagine with it being the first SFC FE.
It seems like none of the english patch projects ever quite manage to finish with this game, it would be great if a talented hacking team took this on and added in some QoL.
I thought you'd be talking that one that's not even numbered, and has the bonus episodes for Book 2.
Book 2 is great. I honestly prefer it over New Mystery of the Emblem. Maybe not above Thracia, but it's in my top 5.
If I recall, Mystery of the Emblem is one of the most popular, if not most popular in Japan, and sold the best in the series there outside of maybe Three Houses.
As for chapter 3 @ 16:38, you don't need to drag Marth all the way around the mountain. I always prefer to use Warren's bridge key to just cross over immediately, and then simply avoid killing Mathis. He has a javelin, can't really double, and it's easy enough to avoid killing him until Marth gets Julian from the upper village.
fe3 looks like a game that would be fun as fuck to break into a thousand pieces, the star orb shards making almost everyone fixable, the orbs themselves being the powers of god (ex. starsphere increases all growths by 30% AND makes it so weapons don't lose durability), ranged staves being inf range, and how tiki works/and my favorite dragon mechanics in the franchise
Kaga did it first feels so satisfying to say especially when it's true.
Star Jacinths returning in Echoes even through DLC was hype.

if you would stream thsoe games, I'd liek to visit you playing FE12 aka New Mystery of the Emblem to see what your opinion on that one would be :)
@@Evilriku13 Sadly I'm not charismatic and would probably end up sucking badly at the gameplay. I'm on FE8 now and am looking forwards to Berwick Saga and the Tellius titles.
I'm currently three days into my first FE3 playthrough and I'm already in Chapter 12 of Book 1 (Chapter 15 of Shadow Dragon).
Edit: I beat Book 1 like about 2 years ago, but 2 chapters into Book 2, my tablet died.
16:56 Actually you messed up this chapter, if you recruit the character in chapter 2 earlier he comes with a Bridge Key that can be used by any character (very easy to miss this because the item inventory is on a separate screen, so people never notice they get it), but I get what you're saying, you'll still have to drag Marth across and defeat most enemies to get the character to recruit Mathis, I had to surround Mathis with strong units without equipment for a while, probably the worst character to recruit in all Fire Emblem games.
I haven't played Mystery of the Emblem, but I have played New Mystery of the Emblem and that game is great!
Mystery of why Ghast's thumbnails bang
0:03 how could you say something so controversial yet so brave
FE3 was actually my first FE since I saw that it was just a remake/sequel of FE1 and went “oh ok might as well start here then”
Matthis moment :P
(Also thanks for reminding me to finish this game. I've played the remake but fe3 is different enough that I still really like what I've played so far)
It took me way too many attempts to get the Ladyblade on Chapter 2! I traded Catria a Vulnerary from Marth on turn 1 so she could run back and heal on the next turn, as well as repositioned the healer (I forget her name) to start at the top rightmost party slot. That let her run up to sit nearby Catria to heal her again if needed
Funnily enough I’ve just started playing this
I was playing blind ironman and didn't have your issues with getting the lady sword. I split up my forces left and right and then killed him with Catria when the thief went left, safely into her range.
I like FE3 more than its remake in NDS simply for the slick animation and music. Simple reasons I know.
