    The Lifer is a collaboration between Fowl Sounds and Denver doom sludgers, Primitive Man. A signature pedal for Primitive Man bassist, Jon Campos, The Lifer also features artwork from PM vocalist/guitarist Ethan Lee McCarthy. Blending independent synth drone and massive, caustic distortion into one unholy chaos machine, The Lifer is truly an instrument unto itself, as well as a unrepentant instrument signal mangler. Use it as a bass or guitar distortion box, as a highly tweakable drone source, or both at once. It even has a built-in delay chip, and a send/return loop for further outboard processing with other pedals and effects. In this demo, I take The Lifer for a spin in a live band context, using it on both bass and guitar, while incorporating the synth for noise and drone accompaniment. Then I dig deep into the features and functions, going over distortion and synth drone sections separately, then showing you how they work together.
    Gear used in this demo:
    Fowl Sounds x Primitive Man The Lifer
    Fujigen Flying V w/ Railhammer P90s
    Ibanez RB650 P/J Bass
    Traynor TS50B bass head
    4x12 cab w/ Celestion G12H-90 speakers
    Cascade Fat Head Ribbon Mic
    Sansamp DI

    I don’t know if I’d ever find a use for this pedal except for experimentation.
    I’m listening to this demo with my iPhone so I’m sure there are some nuances I’m missing without proper headphones/speakers….
    However, it’s obvious and refreshing you give 110% in your demos!
    Always a pleasure, good sir!

      Thanks! Much appreciated, as always. The Lifer is aimed at the experimenters and noisemakers, so definitely not for everyone. If you get into Primitive Man, Sunn O))), Earth or other drone/doom/noise type bands, then it will make perfect sense

      @@HarshTonesInc Is it good on guitar too? I know it's meant primarily for bass, but it seems like it has enough gain for guitars as well.

    An Empty Glass-style distortion/Drone pedal but oriented specifically towards bassists and not a limited edition thing that's never gonna go for under $500? Have I died and gone to heaven?

    • @HarshTonesInc
      @HarshTonesInc  2 года назад +2

      Yes, you are in heaven now! The drone aspect of The Lifer is way more fleshed out as well. It's a proper instrument all by itself.

      But if you don't buy one of the few a available ones directly from fowl you might very well experience prices in kinda that exact range.
      So be quick and get one haha

    I have one of these, and while I love it for messing around, I can never seem to actually a tone that meshes with my guitar player. I've tried a lot, but it always seems to get lost in the guitars because of the low end loss.

    • @HarshTonesInc
      @HarshTonesInc  2 года назад

      The synth element is right in the same frequency range as guitar, so it does tend to blend with it. Not always a bad thing. I like the wall-of-noise aspect, but if you want the synth to stand out, the guitars have to take a break or do something cleaner. It’s definitely the kind of pedal you have to write and arrange around to make the most of its powers

    What’s the distortion circuit based on?

    • @HarshTonesInc
      @HarshTonesInc  10 месяцев назад +1

      I think it's based on Fowl Sounds' Backstabber circuit
