How fast these lads worked.. not a rigger glove or high vis jacket in sight .. thanks for great footage .. loved the fair followed as far as I could in greater Manchester… well out to Blackburn once we got there had one ride and had to head back for the bus 😂..
Who would of thought way back in April 1984 that this video would one day capture an important part of history. So so hard to believe this was 34 years ago, feels like yesterday to me. The 80s were the best part of my life. Amazing video, thanks for sharing!
Fantastic video Frank (I'm not sure how I've missed out on finding them all this time), really does capture the era. I miss the sights and sounds of the old fairs back then, all arriving on the classic trucks, like Scammells, Guys and Fodens, although they must've been hard work to drive without power steering! You forget how much even the rides have changed over the years, I used to love the old Paratrooper and Octopus rides, and nowadays of course many rides are larger, flashier and more like those you only used to find in theme parks. Most are trailer mounted, so the build up / pull down is much quicker and easier, all these old ones look like they took a fair bit of graft to build.Really enjoyed, and I see you have many more so have now subscribed.
Makes you wonder just exactly how many of those rides are still travelling, how many have been broken down for spares and how many have met a sad end by being allowed to rot away in the back of a showmans yard.
Reverchon "Europa" dodgems and a Hayes Fabrications Skid there, those kids @ 26:21 ouch! This is why showmen insist on all children wearing seatbelts on dodgems nowadays, there are some on those cars but they aren't wearing them! Sore noses all round!
