Played by JagOfTroy
Made by the infamous LJN and one of few games to give players access to four player action.
Despite what has been said about it, the game has very enjoyable gameplay with some replay value as it changes up the locations you go to for the first three houses although the stages always look the same.
I do have to give this game a bonus for its musical track as well since it made the game much more pleasant to longplay. -

Never played this as a kid, but watching it now (and more importantly listening to it) reminds me so much of the NES era and how magical it was.
Great game. One of my favorites for the NES
Drac39 I wouldn't say its a great game just cause it's made by a great company rareware but this game is bad
I like this game. Its very good, better than friday the 13th, which too is still a good one. Three best ljn games are: 1) True Lies SNES, 2) This, 3) Friday the 13th NES.
SPIDERS!! PUNCH EM!
SNAKES!! YOU WANT SOME TOO?
lolzy123321 lol love that AVGN episode
The music is certainly what motivated me to stick it out to the end.
Not bad overall.
I’d say this is a solid NES horror game and something that I would go back and play again. I enjoyed this much more than Friday The 13th.
Back to my childhood days, I've found it to be hard as hell... Never was able to beat it. But keep playing, because the Elm Street Theme was so amazing. A good example of an underrated game.
I really want to thank you for taking the time to upload all these wonderful videos.
It brought back great memories from the games I grew up playing to ones I never got a chance to play.
The music is great!
if you noticed the 3rd houses music,
it was slightly mimicking
Hall & Oats' :
"you make my dreams come true".
there were also little hints of Devo.
i like the junkyard music.
David FUCKING Wise
For 8 bit NES, this isn't too bad. The audio and graphics work nice here. Like most other platform games at that time, I'm guessing story content is all wrapped up in the manual, when it would have been nice to include it at the intro. But then again, anybody familiar with the title / movies at least knows the primary goal is to stay alive and slay Freddy.
I remember this and Friday the 13th being tough games. I think in NOES I only ever made it partway through the school.
In Friday the 13th I cant remember how far I ever made it as your progress was hard to judge.
I remember always getting pissed off in the caves because I could never find Jason's mother. If I remember correctly, if you found his mother Jason would lose his weapons.
Original title: _BOO! Haunted House_.
Flamestar320 power to the people OK what you mean ??
The Angry Video Game Nerd.
A man of culture
if you noticed the 3rd houses music,
it was slightly mimicking
Hall & Oats' :
"you make my dreams come true".
(which also sounds a lot like ducktales)
there were also little hints of Devo.
i like the junkyard music.
LJN was only responsible for publishing this game. The game itself was developed by Rare. That should probably be corrected in the description.
I'm watching carefully and your 'sleep' meter goes down with time, not from defeating enemies. When the meter drops to zero, you fall asleep and end up in the nightmare world, which is why the character collects coffee to help him stay 'awake'.
No, the ninja wasn't a wizard, he was a ninja, he was based off of Rick the marital artist from Nightmare 4. And yes, this game was primarily from Nightmare 3. They have to collect the bones and destroy (even though in the movie they buried them but same concept) and Nightmare 3 was the only movie where the teenagers had special powers in their dreams, plus the house and the junkyard. But there are other areas of the game that are based off of the other movies, but minimal
14:03 - "Ah sh*t I missed the bones earlier!"
"Made by the infamous LJN"
Actually, Rare developed this
Oh so that's why it has some good points
EYTPS it's published by LJN but rare suck at making games for NES besides battle toads but rare are great for Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64
Johnny Casey but yeah it has some nice touches
chuckobscure oh I never saw them before. But honestly rareware best place is in Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64
Those bats have been the prime reason behind so many temper tantrums.
I agree, this game was a lot of fun for me. Great music and the boss fights are still fun.
I have to say, the music in this game is kick ass
This is the first game I ever played as a kid. This started it all
Bravest Man of 1989. Punches Spiders, Snakes, Rats, Giant Flys, other humans, and this magical being trying to kill him in his dreams. He gave no fucks
Freddy Krueger: 😈 you're all my Children now
Brutally hard game. But I really like how it stays true to the Film's lore. Throw in some fog and sirens, and this could well be a precursor to Silent Hill.
The boombox music that wakes you up is catchy. Short but catchy
Actually the guy who was a comic book nerd wasn't a wizard, his name was Mark, he was some form of super hero with guns and that was from Nightmare 5. The wizard kid was Will and he was the kid in the wheel chair and he was from Nightmare 3 and the ninja kid was a martial artist named Rick and he was from Nightmare 4
Rare made this. That's why it doesn't suck
24:38 I have to agree with the Angry Video Game Nerd that is kind of catchy
Boo! Haunted House
Probably the best game made by LJN...
When I first played it, I didn't know what to make o the gray picture-icons until I pressed select when my character was asleep and became the athlete; that's when I discovered the dream powers.
Absolutely.
It appears as if he only wanted to blame that game because it was necessary for this kind of video.
And I had that feeling from the first moment I saw the video. He was angry about it for no reason, there was not many things to be upset about.
Other games really have many problems to complain about but not this one.
In any case, this game is the best LJN game ever made, and it is playable, I can not understand why somebody hate it that much.
Then...OH, GOSH! Is Freddy comin'?!
He’s sure is
"Oh yeah! Play that shitty game!"
chuckobscure dude i was just referencing something just because I'm a fan doesn't mean I latch onto everything he says god
I loved playing this when I was younger. To bad I never beat it.
probably the best ending in videogame history.
When I Was 12 and rent tais cartridge, I didn't know how to use the powers and ever played in the normal form. I just reached the 3th stage in the past.
I counted, and there are 204 bones in this game.
How could Rare Ltd. forget to put in two more?
Actually, LJN didn't make this game. They were only the distributor. The creators were actually Rare. Yes, the same rare that later made Donkey Kong Country, Killer Instinct and Goldeneye 007.
Rare now belong to Microsoft.
How can you trademark a person's name? FreddyTM, lol, classic
Not sure about the ninja but one of the kids was a comic book nerd who tried to be a wizard against Freddy but Freddy ripped him up (literally.)
They should’ve called this BOO! Haunted House
Boo haunted house
Should've been called, "BOO! Haunted House!"
Honestly I didnt know about this game until the Nerd video. The freddy game i remember as a kid was the DOS game
The ending was awesome but it's ruined by the trademark!
Now imagine the same ending with 4 players. See TAS.
Freddy Krueger: Let's get high.
The music and sound totally scream RARE. Sounds a lot like snake rattle and roll and the wizards and warriors line. also strangely reminds me of cobra triangle.. was that a RARE game too?
I did not know that. thanks for the fill-in.
Decent game, great music. Friday The 13th for the NES was scarier though.
The Nightmare "IS" ended.
i would love to see a longplay with 4 players (a speedrun) :) very under rated game, thanks AVGN.
New Line needs to wisen up and make current gen games of both Nightmare and Friday13 franchises. I suppose Friday could be stealth/action and play as Jason or the campers, and Nightmare, I dunno, but the possibilities are endless considering the dream factor.
Game DEVs really had their heads up their asses with this one. You're not supposed to be more powerful in the dream world, you're supposed to be fucking helpless!
Rare went with an approach that mimicked an event in a movie. They must have forgotten to balance out the fact you get power ups.
Israel Romero to be honest they could have done so much with this but it flopped I mean the way u could go in to different houses of elm Street to destroy Freddy's bones was pretty cool but it seemed like they got lazy and threw some crap together
Damn the music is scary for LJN. Good job LJN
5:36 baller ass music
Surprisingly decent game ^^
this game was fun, a tad difficult at times but fun. i don't know why it gets a bum wrap. this is one LJN did great compared to other games they made.
Why do I remember there being 2 people blue and red? And also there was one boss I remember the claws coming out of the diet or something?
This is, surprisingly, great background for studying..
I was wondering, can someone find the prototype of Rollergeddon (Licensed by Nintendo of America version)?
To be fair, LJN didn't really make this game, they only published it. The same goes for majority of the other games usually attributed to them.
Where is the "Freddy's Coming" Message?
+Aaron Ladner Please note like the AVGN said; "Sure the title looks cheesy BUT IT IS RUINED BY THE TRADEMARK SYMBOL!!!" 😱😱😱😱
But seriously though; The reason it does not "Freddy's(🇹🇲) Coming!!"; cause of the player is in the dream world on the end of the level.
it doesn't really help you, because after a while, if you don't find coffee you'll wind up being "visited" by freddy in his full form, which is really difficult to kill
It looks like when your life goes all the way down you come back to life a moment later and all the enemies turn into skeletons! What a strange change of events!
I cant make it past the first jump inside the house. I tried at least 100 times from every possible position near the edge both running and standing. I watched several lets plays and it seems like they all jump way higher then i do. When they jump they're character at his peek is in the purple box above and my character doesn't. If anybody else had this problem or knows what to do let me know.
Just slightly press the button
My favorite thing to use is the necromancer. =3
chuckobscure Ninja's my 2nd favorite too. ^^
Oh shit, they trademarked the name Freddy™.
How did you know what house to go to next? The game never gave me any obvious signals. A text box saying where more bones were hidden would have been nice. Better yet, just do what Mega Man did and go to any house in any order.
30:17 how did you pass that fucking jump ?!... IS IMPOSSIBLE !
the only way I figure out how to pass that part was waited for the sleep bar, and just jump with the Wizard Power Up
1,2 Freddy's Coming For You.
3,4 Better Your 🔐 Your 🚪
LJN's NES titles get a lot of hate but watching this longplay made me realize that whatever else you say about this title it is definitely a ... video game.
It's funny that they put R rated movies and put into a kids game for the NES.
This game was made by RARE, not LJN. The latter never made a game in their existence, but then again they never chose wisely when it came to games they would bring out for smaller developer studios.
lol, this is scarier than the movie...!
In this game was Halloween Horror Game
5, 6 grab your crucifix
Why is A Nightmare on Elm Street not trademarked but Freddy is?
This game looks fun but is quite pricey to find one CIB. I have Friday the 13th but this looks like the better game
Indeed. This game may not be perfect, but at least Rare made an okay platformer with a good challenge.
Jeremy Riley the game sucks but the ideas innovative
chuckobscure a bit of both actually Friday the 13ths map was innovative for its time and had some nice environments and for NOES had a good idea collecting Freddy bones and burning them they were pretty good ideas but both the games were bad
a Nightmare on Elm Street Nintendo Entertainment System NES Based on Slasher Horror Movie a Nightmare on Elm Street 2 Freddy's Revenge 1985 and a Nightmare on Elm Street 4 the Dream Master 1988 Robert Englund Freddy Krueger
One of the better LJN games. Most are garbage, but this one is actually decent.
1, 2 Freddy™'s coming for you...
sounds like double dragon to me
si no es el negro de la pelí. Entonces quien es?
either that, or when you get hit you lose a bar as well
Freddy krueger is playable in Mortal Kombat 9
The original concept for this game was to play as Freddy and kill the teens , there are beta screenshots of this game out there with that concept.
Seen them. I bet Nintendo of America ordered the game to be like this to avoid controversy, and because they know they don't want what happened to Atari 2600's Texas Chainsaw Massacre to happen to one of their games, even if they were not publishing.
And may be instead of checking them out, they released them immediately.
That could be the reason why they published so many awful games.
But at least many designers made them well, for example Terminator 2 for the NES and this game are okay though LJN released them.
ONE OF MY FAVORITE NES GAMS. I NEVER OWNED T BUT RENTED IT EVERY WEEKEND. FOR MONTHS. THIS GUY DOES A LOT OF AVOIDING. SHOULD GET THE NNJA SUIT. A JUMP IS AN AUTOMATIC JUMP KICK.
The jump at 30:21 is probably the only part of the game that is objectively horrible
This game is my fucking nightmare!!!
1,2 Freddy's coming for you 3,4 better lock your door 5,6 grab your crucifix 7,8 better stay up late 9,10 you'll never sleep again 11,12 what's that smell? 13,14 it's Freddy farting 15,16 he's stinking up elm street
So you lose health for giving enemies the smack down? And dying seems to actually help you... What interesting concepts.
If you enjoyed this game you should try the free 1999 NES fan game “A Nightmare on Elm Street: Son of a Hundred Maniacs” You get to play AS Freddy. Download link in my most recent video.
