Fixing The Humming Or Hissing Noise On Your Speakers

- Correction: In general, balanced audio will give you a better, stronger audio signal without any extraneous noises. Unbalanced audio, on the other hand, is susceptible to picking up noise and interference over longer distances. The ground wire in an unbalanced audio cable can pick up unwanted noise as the audio signal travels through it. This susceptibility (or lack thereof) to interference is due to how the cable is made.

Lots of issues here. The tip-ring-sleeve (TRS) style cable you used is not a balanced cable, nor is the 1/4" phone jack a balanced connector. It is an unbalanced cable for stereo or 2-channel circuits. That it works to shield noise in this application is simply good luck - mono jacks can have the shield contact anywhere along the sleeve, which could result in no change in results. I'm glad it works for you, just know that it was pure luck. An XLR cable is one example of a balanced cable/connector system. The best answer for noise is to eliminate it at the source, which will take some time and troubleshooting skills.
Thank you sir - was using the cables they "came with" (second hand), switched to me old ones
Looking forward to hearing what you make - subbed
This guy knows what he is talking about! I had buzzing and humming from my Logitech speakers from my PC. I bought an EMI filter power strip, a 3.5mm filter, I switched out 2-3 cables from the cable pack that I bought and nothing helped. Turns out it was the cheap, crappy cables! I replaced it with a Monster brand 3.5 cable and all of the buzzing and humming is gone! Pure, clear, clean audio!! Thank you!
What cables diid you replace? the RCA cables going to the speakers? Or just the 3.5 mm going to the pc?
@@mauritzbotha4422 The 3.5mm cables going from PC to the Logitech 623 speakers. So the line in/out. I think my new cables are Monster brand maybe? They're exactly what you said about the balanced and it 100% worked. I still can't believe it.
My speakers use speaker wire. Not like an amp cable or a mic cable like in the video. Its 2 wores, red and black. They plug into an amplifier. Im thinking its the amazon essential speaker wores. But the noise stopped for awhile. Then it came back today 😊
My amplifier doesn't have any cables plugged into it. it has a humming sound even when the volume is zero.
I’m using XLR cables. A lot of hum. What then?
Some monitors have a ground lift switch which also can remove hum.. or.. use ground lift plug adapters on your monitors at the outlet 🤘
Not a feedback loop - EM interference. And you solved it with a balanced (TRS) cable. On a balanced cable the interference is canceled out by the additional wire. Goggle "what is a balanced cable and how does it work".
Thanks for clarifying!
Thanks for the advice I have the same type of set up and humbing noise. That solves my problem.
Awesome, thank you boss!
I’m having this issue but I use speakon to banana plug cables… can I buy them balanced or is there a way to make them balanced? Or is there another reason I’m getting so much hum Thanks in advance
Hi buddy, I got a question here, I brought my ep a pair of 7 inch monitor speakers, but on some keys it sounds broken, I changed cables and e.g, still the same, do you have any idea what is going on?
It makes sense what he’s saying on the video but those who have difficult understanding they don’t listen very well what you’re explaining
The 3rd channel in the cable actually reverses polarity and feeds only the hum back in, cancelling it out but leaving your audio..... just freaking brilliant. The inventor is surely a genius....
60 Hz hum can also result from noise in your house AC supply, for that you have to deal with the ground between your AC cables and your 117V home mains.
very easily solved, thank you
Thank you, I'll try it...😁
Wow thanks it was helpful
Thanks a bunch
I don’t get the hum , I get a tick tick tick like a clock tick on some fm channels , not all an no noise on any components atall , so do I have a bad fm ground maybe or need to clean my rca jacks it’s been a while since I’ve did that
DI boxes with ground lift is a universal cure, surprised you didn't mention those. Converts unbalanced to balanced. Or if you get hum in your balanced you can use an audio quality inline xlr isolation transformer, I used that on my 15" sub. Sescom is the industry brand often used.
Good sir, Using balanced and still get it. When I can I'll in here what I have and where I bought which is all Amazon anyhow. Thanks!
Need help! My Android phone has a feedback even when there's nothing plugged in, just using the phone's recorder and speaker. I tried to plug my guitar in via an irig but the feedback is still there, i think it is just my phone so i tried on another phone but nothing changed. Any suggestions? :'(
You remove the black line on trs connector what did you do?
I recently bought an NX6000D to power dual UM-18s yesterday. Unfortunately, I'm only getting buzzing out of the speaker, no sound at all. I've swapped out 2 different speakon cables, I hooked the amp to 2 different AVRs, 3 different subwoofers, tried both channels A & B and still only getting that buzzing noise. I logged into the DSP with my computer and tried different settings and still only buzzing. I only have 1 XLR to RCA cable so that's the only cord I haven't been able to swap out (it's a brand new monoprice 3ft cable). Does anyone know what could the potential issue could be? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this, this is my first amp so I could be doing something wrong.
I had new speakers all around my car and they sound like they blew up but all at the same time. So I installed a brand new radio and new speakers again. But the speakers still sound blown around level 20 what could it be? No subwoofer in the trunk
I have podcasting equipment and I’m having the issue when I plug the in the sound card/board to my laptop.
My amplifier doesn't have any cables plugged into it. it has a humming sound even when the volume is zero.
That track it's fire
thanks
What about a 3 pin xlr ?
i get this sound all the time with just my regular speaker for my computer. just basic small speakers. its annoying. its not there all the time. it starts of small. than slowly gets louder & louder. i have to shut my speakers of at night. because even with my computer turned of. if the sound is still on. it makes the noise midway through the night. so frustrating. thankyou for this video, i hope it solves it. as i’ve spent way to much trying to fix my computer and its only a year old 🥲
Thanks DJ. Ama buy me a new Cable just like that Sir..❤🎉
Hey! good stuff... I guess most PAs work on XLRs so here's a quick question.
How long have you been using this setup? (Scarlett Solo and your EV PA) Also, does it work its full capacity with the DAC of your Scarlett solo?
Edit: I just realized the impedance & power rating of the amp inside the Scarlette solo should match that of a driver that big! I highly doubt that, and thus this might ALSO cause the hissing or humming sound. Other than that... Good luck ahead man cheers!
I’ve been using the PA system connected to the Scarlett for over a month.
Previously I owned large KRK speakers and they also had the hiss. I didn’t realize until recently it was because of the cables.
I am using the same cable he changed to but the noise is still there😢😢
Could be an earth problem, try other plug socket
im having exadctly the same problem with my maono caster device the cable that i connect to my phone make that horrible noise
I have Alto TS315 speakers that I bought in 2019 and they do the humming noise. I have krk rokit 7g4 monitors plugged into my Pioneer XDJ-XZ and they dont hum. Going on your video, I have just purchased off Amazon 2 x XLR female to 1/4" jack TRS shielded balanced cables to hopefully eliminate the hum in the Altos.
Awesome! Let me know if that fixes the problem
@@DJ.Sparks.Studio Hi, unfortunately I tried the cables and still have the noise, however it is only when the speakers volumes are cranked right up that it becomes noticeable.
@@jasperhay yea it doesn’t remove it entirely if you’re cranking up the volume but it does remove most of it.
Sometimes that noise has to to with the electricity in the space, if it's earthed properly or not, and if you are sharing electricity with light fixtures that have a dimmer, this will usually mess up your system. Im struggling with long distances humming and noise. Not sure how to clear it
I currently have an issue with my subwoofer where it will randomly make a coughing noise (best way i can destribe it) after it recieves a signal from my amp
I'm not sure if it is due to wear and tear of the subwoofer. Its an Onkyo Skw-588 i believe either a 10inch or 12inch woofer about 6 years old and never been dropped or damaged.
My amplifier is a denon avr-x2300w same age as subwoofer
The issue is that it is inconsistent and only makes the noise 1 time after initially recieving the signal at high and low volumes. And my subwoofer is set to 50% at all times and i have even reduced it slightly and still does the same shenanigans😂
If anyone knows anything or has had similar issues with either the same model, age or other onkyo subwoofer please let me know. Cheers
good shiii man
Mine does it when I plug my interface or monitor into my MacBook. Not the speaker or instrument cable. How would I solve that issue?
If your laptop is not plugged into DC power, does it still do it?
@@Mubashir4802 yup. Everything’s plugged into the same power conditioner as well.
Mine hums but it's a red and black cable how do I fix that???
Cool
thanks bro problem solved

What if I am using XLR cables and have this buzzing sound?
Update: in my case it turned out to be because I was not using surge protector for the speakers and mixer.
I have trs and XLR
Wow, Ethan hawk's is full of information
Now if
You can tell me how to fix that sound on my car stereo I know it’s ground most likely
What kind of cable is that my tweeter has annoying humming
It’s called a balanced cable. I have a link in the description for the set I use.
My speakers are wires and my system is Yamaha. No hunming with DVD only humming with tv
My Yamaha MSR100 monitors have XLR
TRS Cables didn't Fix mine
I've been struggling with this for so long that its embarrasing. I COULD KISS YOU!! Going to the music shop right now. I'm. so. stupid.
it still doesnt work
Bro it’s the dust that’s causing that hum. Jesus clean that up 😂
Lol nah. Even the day I bought them the hum was an issue. Also I live out in the country where there’s a lot of wind and dirt…so even if I clean everything, the next day its dirty again. Kind of a pain.
@@DJ.Sparks.Studio I know it’s not the dust causing the hum ,I was just busting your balls about the amount of dust is all.
@@Bibblebabbler oh trust me…the dust drives me nuts too. 😂 haven’t found a good solution for it yet.
Well Bro, thanks for the tip, but in your case, the noise is probably being caused by all the dust literally everywhere in the room 😂
So I’ve heard 🤣
I see this is an old video, but you are confusing mono and stereo cables...I don't think your explanation is correct
Bro, you just switched from a mono 6.35mm cable to stereo 6.35mm cable. No magic here.
It may seem like a no brainer to you, but you’d be surprised how many people don’t realize that you can reduce the hissing by having the correct cables.
@@DJ.Sparks.StudioI just unmuted unplugged and plugged again and boom 😂 thanks for demonstration though I got motivated simply by that 🎉😂
There is magic. Depending on the output of your system, the TRS “stereo” cable can be used as a BALANCED “mono” cable. In fact, many professionals use balanced cables instead of unbalanced (TS cable which you described as mono) to get rid of interference on the cable. This is achieved because it has 2 signal wires and 1 ground wire instead of 1 signal wire and 1 ground wire. What happens is that the noise is picked up in reversed polarity on the negative signal wire and gets flipped when reaching it’s destination. That means that the noise picked up along the way gets cancelled out (almost) completely. So be careful when saying “stereo” cable to an actual “balanced” cable.
@@DJ.Sparks.Studio Yeah because not having the black line separating the two contacts in the speaker’s amp, just shorts those two pins together, resorting in a gnd loop
It may not be magic, but for people who aren’t well-versed in audio interfaces and speakers, it helps a lot
Double ring suck!
Meh
can someone help me PLEASE? HUM/HiSS problem
when I pull out speaker cable (3.5mm to 2Rca) from speaker hum disappears.
when connect to pc and playing any kind of music, hum disappears BUT when I stop the music after 5 seconds, hum instantly comes back.
