- This is just a quick way to confirm the diagnosis of a stripped plastic cam gear on a pre-1998 John Deere 425 and 445 garden tractor. You will need to remove the side panels and you will need a 3/8 ratchet with 10 mm deep socket.
This is a repair that is easy to perform. It does require removal of the engine. My 1996 425 broke the cam gear at 900 hours a few years back. Due to the low hours and great condition of the rotating assembly and bearings - i opted to only replace the water pump and cam gear - all new gaskets. Make SURE you clean all the broken pieces of plastic from the cam and water pump gears.
why do you need to remove
Thankyou very much , this is exactly the information I need to diagnose my father in law’s JD 425
Glad it was helpful!
2:37..... You're welcome
If the engine “free wheels” when cranking, that’s a sure sign of stripped cam. Usually at least one valve will be open.
I wish there was an easy way to tell if someone had already swapped the cam gear on the one I just bought
Sadly there is not that I know of. But I don’t know it all.
Would this be the case on both cylinders? As in the machine won't run at all?
Great idea!
my 445 just blew something at 1500 hours...i only have one valve that moves very little and i was able to pull the push rod out of the other valve..its 1 98 so its right in the middle when they went to steel gear...gotta do some exploratory surgery
Valve cover gasket here in canada $20.00, I had ordered one to fix leak then before I picked it up my cam gear stripped :(
Where did they come up with a $1500 figure to replace the cam? That would be well over $1000 in labor.
He never specified how they came up with the figure. Typically this repair if done at a shop (Dealer or independent) seems to run $1,100-1,300. I have seen a few right at $1,000 but they opted not to replace the water pump.
Just got a 425 that "ran and died suddenly"
I'm betting gear could be partially shot as one cylinder has no compression and the other the valves move and tested good.. 510 hours.
That or something else happened lol.
Hello. .. igot a jhon deere 345. . And i dont have the hood for it. How much do you think will be a good price to sell it. Has 930 hrs.
I'm not really a great source for prices on those types of machines. Sorry.
Plastic cam gear.... taryl calls them..the rat turd engine..
Did his dentist tell him that?
Plastic oil pump gear also. Already replaced the plastic cam and put on a new water pump at that time as well years ago. Now I lost oil pressure. Don't think it's the oil pressure sensor and the wires look good. Probably time to open up the engine and take a peak inside. Glad the dash light worked and shut it down before it got real expensive.
hey I was looking through videos I was wondering have done a video on how to replaces a plastic cam gear on a 425 or 445?
Sadly I have not. Aside from this machine all the other 425 and 445 machines I've had either had steel gear or didn't have a problem.
