This was relaxing to watch. Love the handiwork. I do wonder however how much contact the water has with the media during the trickling? I thought some stagnation time would be required for the water to get the beneficial bacteria to do their work before it's returned to the tank.
Yes emergency overflow and so oxygen can get easy in the boxes because they are closed. Normally I like open trickle filters so lots of oxygen can get in. In this case the customer wanted close boxes to prevent to much splashing.
Hello Gunter. We used around 30 gallons of Alfa Grog in the bottom container, 15 gallons of Crystal Bio in the second container and another 15 gallons in the third container. In the top container we only used a Japanese mat. The big holes in the middle are overflows.
Thank you very much Tony V. We used Alfa Grog in the bottom container, Crystal Bio in the Second and third Container and a Japanese Mat in the top Container. Just google for the companies who sell these materials.
Hello, nice filter, just how big is the drill bit did you use to drill the bottom of the filter, and how big is the drill bit you use to drill the top pipe?
great and precise job! i've some questions: - which kind of water needs to be filtered with that? from where is it coming from? - if all the small holes allow the water percolation through all the boxes (top-down), is not clear to me what is the scope of the central tube into each one... - is there an internal structure which support the high weight? being all the boxes filled with water + stones thank you! ;)
Hello Matteo, The water is coming from a indoor growing tank with high stock of Tosai. The middle pipes are emergency overflows and also helps provide more oxygen in the containers because this trickle is a closed one. These are reinforced stackable crates and can hold a lot of weight.
Hi there, what size of drill bit did you use to drill the bottom of the container? Also what size of drill bit did you use for the sprinkler pipe on the very top container? Please reply as soon as you can. Thanks
I would think the holes could be a problem in time, would be interested in how it is still working? have the holes been plugging up at all? Figure since Feb, you could tell us how it is now? Any problems at all? Thanks this was a great tutorial.
Thank you for your nice comment Bah Zing. The holes are not clogged and the system is working as planned. The water parameters and disolved oxygen levels are perfect.
Hello, very nice work! I have a question i hope you can help me: I have built a similar filter. I have used only one pipe to put the water in the Filter ( you have used u- shaped) In the pipe ( a straight one) are two rows with holes, right and left. The Problem is that the water comes only through one row of holes for example on the left side comes water through the holes and on the right side comes less water. Is the pump not strong enough? Or is the row on the side of the box where the water pumped up to small? My English is really bad i know, sorry for that😂 Whitch kind of pump do you have used? Thank you
What did you do after drilling the holes? What's the thing called? It looks like you smoothened the edge of the holes and it looks amazing. Where can I get one of those?
Isn't this flawed in that the intake pipe will eventually clog with detritus? The shower exit from the pipe at the top doesn't allow large chucks to leave the pipe. Maintenance must be a nightmare.
materials list? what was the drill attachment that you cleaned the holes with? What are those bins called? I love the flow meter you put in the pipe btw.
Well done! I made 1 for my cichlids tank inside my bed room...works well,,, only problem was the "smell" and the "noise". I'm going to make a canister filter to replace it..
Short question: how does the filtration over the rock work if there is no light in there for upkeep of filtration algae or does it work purely on bacteria?
Is it true that trickle filters don't need cleaning except for the pre filter since water is constantly trickling through the media, rinsing it continually. Loved your video and trickle bio filters are what I prefer over submerged filters. Thanks
Fish don’t have a problem with that. You walking up to them or having a pump in your pond is more stressful to them than this water falling on the surface 😊
Hello Philip. The size of the overflow and the holes in the bottom must be big enough for the volume of water that goes through the filter. If the holes and overflow are to small and the volume of water that enter the bins are too much the filter will overflow.
Can anyone explain to me first, the reason for this. Second, where to get everything and finally, was it really worth doing! It looked good but doesn't seem worth the while!
Any improvements you would add after its been running for some time? How long do you get changing first mechanical filter pad replacing? Weekly replace or cleaned or monthly?
What type of bit is that at 2:24? It looks like it adds a radius to the edge of the holes you just drilled. I must be naive, but I have never heard of that before.
Hello gpwnedable. Thank you for your question. The drill we used is a Counter Sink Drill. It smooths the edges of the holes what will result in a nicer finish.
Thank you very much Ula Oglum Bune. The whole setup ( Containers, Pvc, HQ Filter Materials ) cost around $350 dollars. You can make it cheaper when you choose smaller containers and different filter materials.
