How to Make a Saw Till for Hand Saw Storage. I have wanted to make hand saw storage for a long time. and this time I decided to do a full design for the saw till. I wanted it to hang on the french cleats I wanted it to hold all of my hand saws, panel saws, back saws, dovetail saws, coping saws. well, you get the idea. it needs to hold all of my hand tools that deal with saws. This is a simple hand tool woodworking project that anyone can build with a few minimal hand tools and can be easily built in a weekend.

Just finished my saw till. As always, wonderful plan that was easy to adapt to my needs. I used a reclaimed ancient oak beam from a timber-framed house that was too beat up for the original purpose I got it for. But it had just enough salvageable wood left in it for this till. Came out absolutely gorgeous and really popped once the Danish oil and wax was applied.
Thank you for sharing James, This is a nice, traditional addition for a workshop.
thanks. I am looking forward to years of use with it.
Very repeatable - put a few of my own design touches in and love the various joinery techniques in this project. A very enjoyable build
Wonderfully beautiful and brilliantly designed James! A ton of great info clearly and elegantly presented. As always you remain an inspiration as a humble yet accomplished craftsman. Thank you.
thank you Michael. that means a Lot
I MADE MINE A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO , I USE MOSTLY POWER TOOLS BUT NOT AWAYS. GOOD JOB
thanks mike!
Thanks for another great video, never used a saw till before, but i am really sold on the idea. A great way to access all saws, and to protect the cutting edge . Another project in my workshop to work along with you. Love the french cleat wall. Last week i hung a heavy mirror with the french cleat system. Thanks James. Have a Great Weekend
Sounds like fun. they make life so easy to just turn around and grab the saw. then turn around and put it back.
Great video! I love watching your builds! Please keep up the good work!
thanks man. I will.
Awesome job the saw till came out sweet!! I always thought about how is my saw blade going to slide nicely ooohhhhh use a slightly larger saw kerf. Thank You for answering that. Shop is really coming together nicely
thanks Thom!
Awesome
It made me strangely happy to see you bind that saw up. It's good to know that it happens to the best.
LOL yup it becomes less and less with time but it still happens from time to time.
Awesome!!
Nice work James. I've been needing to build a saw til for a while. Shop is coming together nicely.
thanks! I wish I built it a long time ago!
Great method for Dovetails, and beautiful shop!
thanks Brandon!
Good construction!
You are a beaver...Nice to acknowledge Shannon...I have been tempted to opt in...
You should. it is some of the best money you could spend in the hand tool world.
Loooks absolutely beautiful 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Ps if no one has told you yet, thank you for the way you walk us through every project. I enjoy how you put your videos together, keep up the amazing job you do 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
thanks man! That means A LOT!
Another nice project James, thanks.
thanks Bill that was a fun one!
I am 69 years old , was being taught carpentry at the age 10 from my Grand father, that was a master, lady's an gentlemen LET THE HAND SAW DO THE WORK it takes a little longer but it will be a better cut. Same with a back saw, an a Japanese pull saw thank you
so ture. a well setup saw will do it all for you!
Very nice. It turned out really good.
thanks man. this was a fun one!
I'd kinda like to see your take on a traditional jointers chest build
I have though of doing that a few times, but I never have as I have no need for one. but maybe some day.
Would love to see a video on restoring hand saws and how to correctly sharpen and set a cross cut and a rip cut 😊 loving your videos
thanks Kurt. I have videos on all those topics. though they are older. I will probably redo them next year sometime.
Great work James! You will get a lot of use out of that for sure. I must say that the shop is looking good.................. :)
thanks Steve. I am looking forward to having a Plane till behind me too.
Nice
Awesome job James! 👍👊
thanks Fred.
This is cool
Great job James that really added to your collection looks super hanging on that wall.
thanks Opa. I am looking forward tot he Plane till beside it!
Nice. The whole shop is looking good.
thanks Jeremy
Awesome James! Shop is looking great!
thanks man!
Thank you.
any time!
Nice till. I like the design.
thanks Jim!
@ 7:01 Yup, nothing like a clean smooth bottom. LOL
Nice till, takes a lot of space on the french cleat wall. I think I would consider putting it on an adjoining wall. However, that is your shop, you know what will work for you. Looks really nice. Can't wait for the plane storage rack.
yup I have spaced everything out so I know where it will all go. I want the most used things closest to the center of the wall in quick and easy reach!
Nice project!
thanks Franco!
Looks great as always sir!
thanks man!
man this is fantastic!
thanks man!
Awesome video beautiful piece
thanks Cody!
Very nice!
thanks again!
Realy nice work
thanks man!
Sooo another important tip… make sure you count your saws before you start… I did the most rookie mistake ever…. Now I need 2 more just to hold the current saws, without adding anymore to the collection.
I see the saw or did I saw the saw oh well we'll just see-saw
Beautiful.I like the idea of a place to hang miscellaneous and odd saws. Space is at a premium in my little (10 by 20) shopI’m thinking about maybe putting that space under the bottom also to use for that purpose.
Nice! we have the same size shop!
nice till! When I get a few more saws, I will have to look at your plans. I think it would be overkill for the 1 rip, 1 big box store freebie cross cut and 1 cheap plastic handled back saw that I have. Love the video. Nice to know that someone like you is still an "apprentice" and learning every day, gives me hope :)
Thanks Frank! you got to start somewhere!
Shop is shaping up really well James, brought me right back to shop class at high school, that was the last time I remember seeing a saw till 👍
LOL my shop in high school did not have any hand tools at all.
Wood By Wright let's put it this way, I've got a few years on you, the Uk at the time was15years behind the USA in school tech level and Ireland was 10 years behind the Uk. So you would have had to go to high school somewhere around 1960 😆
LOLwell I was homeschooled through high school and my father does anything to not use a hand tool.
power tools do have their place, but hand tools are so much more peaceful to use and you feel more one with the wood. Each craftsman must follow what works for them, I suppose. I was kind of hoping to see you turn the dowel on your homemade lathe, I love home-built hand made tools.
My high school didn't even have a wood shop. We were all "supposed to go to college"...
Really nice James...rr
thanks Richard!
Just for grins and giggles, I think it would have been cool to do half-lap dovetails on the ends of the blade holders. It would force you to glue them at the same time you glue the bottom, but I don't think it's that complicated. The advantage is the coolness of the dovetails showing on the sides of the till.
that would have been fun.
Oh man, I really love your channel and builds as I've always learn something from your videos. To be honest I'll build storage for my...circular saws and jigsaw :). I'm a powertool guys LOL. From Australia :)
Nice. I used to be.
Wood By Wright you used to used power tools, which is more enjoyable?
"Saw till it tastes good use some pepper if you like." My puns are as bad as my french.... Cool video.
LOL thanks Bill!
Hey James, as useful as your plans are, maybe it's an idea to include a metric equivalent for all the imperial units?
some day I would love to offer that. but it is 3-4 times the work to include it and only about 30% of the audience uses it. I would love for the US to finally switch some day.
I watched it till the end :D
LOL my kind of man!
nice project. i definatly have a saw clutter i should make one of these soon.
since the cross pieces that the saws go into are cut nearly all the way through, perhaps a groove cut in the backing board for that board to be glued into would be more relaiable than just the edge glued?
I was originally going to do that but decided it was not worth the effort. it may become a problem 50+ years from now when the glue starts to separate, but by that time I will have a different saw till.
He is crazy!
you know it!
You would free up lots of valuable wall space if the saws were hung with the handles up, blades down, and have the handles at belt height.
I would, but I want my most used tools close to the center of the wall for quick reach, and I have plans for that space down bellow.
Hi there from Portugal,
Great project :D
Q: Do saw need to be vertically for some reason?
Obrigado(Thanks)
you can put them whatever way you want. I just like them handles down because it is easy to hold them that way.
:D
Rewatching the ""Tool storage"" playlist, and starting to wonder who is that guy and where is he....... (so much has changed)...
Lol yup. Time Marches onward.
Excellent video, as usual. Please do a video on building a bucksaw like the one you used building this saw till.
thanks Patrick. I am assuming you are referring to the dovetail saw? that was actually made by bearkat woodworks here is his video. ruclips.net/video/KIJgzq3ORnE/видео.html I do want yo make one but it is a ways down the list right now so i am not sure if I will get to it in 2018.
That beautiful buck saw that looked kinda like a bow saw, but you definitely said buck saw in the video about making the saw till.
Oh, I found your video for making a turning saw, but that blade looked narrower.
Oh sorry, I read that wrong. I read back saw nor buck saw. yup, those were common for rough cutting. they work fast and ara almost always for crosscutting. I did not make it. I picked up mine off of craigslist but I find them in most every antique shop I go to.
Thanks for the info. Perhaps one day you will make one from scratch. Either way, I love your videos! Keep up the good work. =o)
Someday I'll find wall space for one of those.
LOL that real estate disappears quickly!
Yep. :D
thanks!
You could of used your stanley 55 to cut the angle to the cleats with the 45 degree chamfer cutter
that would be another fun way to do it.
After watching the video i was wondering if you considered adding chamfers to the blade slots. Getting the blades in just looks a bit fiddly.
I have thought of it, but after putting them in and out a couple times it gets quite easy.
Do you have a disston saw vise to hold the blade when you sharpen your saws?
I do but generally I try to use my own sawvice that I made a while ago. I have plans on that if you want to see them.
Now make a till for your planes. Then I'll have a plan for winter projects.
+Blair Korchinski that video should be out saturday!
Every time I see one of your videos I play a game, what finish will you use and what pun will you make? :p Seriously how much time do you spend thinking of a pun for the intro? great project btw
LOL I am overflowing with them. I am a stay at home dad of 3 kids. Dad jokes are what I do!
Was Going to say... he's a dad he got pun!
Nice simple clean design, good idea with the dowel for the coping saws, I was just going to put them on a shelf but this is better only I think I will use the sides of my (to be built) saw till for that and my hack saws. What would you suggest for metal framed bow saws?
+Patrick Brett thanks. I have the big saws on pegs off to the left.
Wood By Wright I can see the carcass (is that the right term?) Saw on the wall but I am limited in the space I can use so need to think if another way, probably just have to use a shelf for the big bow saw.
I am currently making your saw till, but don't want French cleats. Can I just screw the till into the wall through the two mid-brace backs? And will leaving off the top cleat affect the structural integrity of the till? Oh, and good luck with the move. Sorry I am way too far away to help you with it.
In that case don't put any cleats in the back at all just screw it the wall.
I really like that marking knife. What brand and where can I get one.
it was made by Dan the Maker Man. he makes some of the best marking knives I have ever used. so comfortable and so nice to use. here is his channel making that knife. ruclips.net/video/epJIdJepz1w/видео.html
Is that an electrical outlet I spot? All hand tools huh? 😉
LOL you caught me. don't worry it will be covered with tools soon!
James - how deep did you cut the mid brace front. I'm assuming 1" of the 1 1/2" width?
Ya about 7/8" - 1" just eyeballed it.
What is this tape measure thing used for?
I don't know! some people like them!
Love the video, love the hand tool work, but I have to say, a digital watch seems out of place...Just saying LOL!!
Lol it is an odd dichotomy in my personality. I'm a heavy first adopter techie that uses all hand tools in the Wood shop.
@@WoodByWright It's all good brother... I'm probably 80% hand tool, 10% power, 10% purchased.. just saw the watch and had a smile...
I watched your video twice and I built mine it’s little smaller than yours
What software do you use? I currently have AutoCAD but the image I saw in your videos certainly didn't look like it came from that software.
For the plans I sell I use sketchup as it is the most common for woodworkers. With my engineering background I would prefer to use AutoCAD or even solid works but most people don't have that programmed open the files.
Who is the Rogers? Person you referenced for your apprenticeship?
What is the cure time on BLO that is homemade?
Depends on how you make it. But usually 24 hours.
Nice work! Why not cope out the waste of your dovetails? Faster than chopping it with a chisel, no?
I find with hardwood and gaging them up it is faster then coping them out. you are going to have to chop back to the line anyway so why not do it all in one movement. that is my thought on the matter though each to their own. that is what makes this sport so much fun!
Computer? It's a slippery slope, you'll be building a CNC router soon.
that is on my list. a foot-powered CNC!
Without a computer he wouldn't have a RUclips Channel.
The old-timers used panto-graph to make duplicates. My grandfather had one when I was a kid, and it was really old then. It had some scratch awls with it. By the time I saw him use it he just fitted a pencil. Not exactly a CNC, but I bet you could make one out of white oak and put a BLO finish on it, and incorporate a hanger for your french cleat wall.
oh I have even better designs in my head than that. it will be a fun one!
I wonder does it mean if you want to use a saw you have to release all of them by pulling out the dowl?
No the handle just rests on the dowel. It is glued in place. You just pick up the saw and set it down when done
Wood By Wright Thank you. I didn't notice that. Admittedly I did a brief look at the video to see how easy would be to duplicate... So thank you I think it's a winner for us to copy!
Another great video! Tell me, what does your wife think about you perpetually smelling of BLO? 😄
she just thinks it is the deodorant. LOL
No demo of use?
What do you mean?
@@WoodByWright Taking saws in and out of till. I am about to build one, was thinking of putting small bevel on face of slots for saw.
First off, whats a tape measure and why are vises even used?
Comment down below
Wait, wait, the video cannot be over yet. You did not do any carving on it or put you WW on it.
LOLI am thinking of hanging the logo behind the blades.
Who is he listening to?
Who knows what book I was listening to then. Got a few of them on the audible account lol
I quit watching this video when the commercial came on in the middle! Thumbs down! No more u-tube commercials!!!
ya it was sad wen they started putting in all the mid roll adds. but that is why I do youtube Premium. plus it helps out the creators more.
@@WoodByWright I think you can control the ad's. Beginning and end are fine, but don't let them put them in the content. Check out your controls.
The problem is I can't change all of them. I have to change each and every video individually. And I have almost 2,000 videos up now. Each video takes around 30 seconds or so to do. So we're talking several days of non-stop work just to turn these off.
@@WoodByWright Thanks for the info, I changed my thumb to up.
Commercials mid video.... really?
That is what youtube does to videos over 10 minutes now. Not all of them but it depends on the viewer. Not my choice.
