Honestly - the situation in Ireland is one that may never be resolved, which is beyond a shame. As a Brit, I don't think we should have any claim over Ireland, and the problems imposed on the Irish, historically, by the British Crown/Government; I can see exactly why the Irish rebelled in 1798 and onward. It's very uneasy that things between the two sides might flair up again - as innocent people on both side will be caught up. It's a shame that Ireland cannot be united, and for those who consider themselves as British - come over here! If I could sack off the ****s in Westminster and become Irish, then I'd be more than happy.
It's not that easy. If it was, the Troubles never would've happened. The concept of a united Ireland is a lovely one, and acknowledging that the British never should've been in Ireland in the first place is of course right and important. However, the people of Northern Ireland are the people whose voices matter most as it's them who are most affected. And that is precisely why the Good Friday Agreement lays out the consent principle and the path towards breaking from the United Kingdom and uniting with Ireland should the people of Northern Ireland choose to do so. They can do so legally and peacefully if they desire, but as of now, that desire is not held by the majority. To say "If you want to be British, go back over to Great Britain" is flawed thinking because the identity of the Northern Irish is very much a mixed one. For most, they are both Irish AND British - Northern Irish. They are not one or the other and hold both views equally. Not being Irish in terms of being part of the Republic, but in terms of being part of the Irish peoples as a whole who have inhabited that land for so long. It's like saying to the Scots, "If you want to be with the English, move to England." No, they are British but also Scottish. That's their identity. It's not one or the other for most of them.

@evanmaccarthy7539 The good Friday agreement effectively removes all use of arms from the conflict. We now have the right to Identify as Irish british or both and when the time is right everyone can decide for an all Ireland or not via a vote. Arm conflict now is futile. Thats what makes the GFA one of the most impressive and important peace agreements in modern history.
