Wonderful video! I like how you saved the made-in-China part, for the last view. I'm sure they sound okay. I have a set of JBL LX600, and guess what? Even though they are made in the USA, the build quality isn't much better. Same cheap particle board, laminated in black-grained plastic, the bottom peeled off over the years. The drivers - outsourced from France - have surprisingly small magnets, given the speakers' power rating. The driver connecting wires are a flimsy light gauge, which is funny because people probably go out and buy heavy gauge speaker wire going to the amp, thinking, this is "JBL" - right? The made-in-the-USA crossover board looks almost identical to the made-in-China board you show here. When the cheap foam surround on the woofer gave out, instead of re-foaming it, I replaced the lightweight driver with a real woofer (different brand), with a robust heavy-duty magnet. Sounds great. Listening to them now, in fact. If you want to look inside a real hi-fi speaker system, would love to see you take down an ADS 710 or 810. Built like a tank, and the sound, with dome midrange as well as dome tweeter, is breathtaking. It's on an entirely different level.
JBL (Harman International) are now fully-owned by Samsung. Wouldn't be surprised if Samsung cut costs using Chinese OEM products and renaming / relabeling them.
The main disadvantage of inexpensive speakers is the crossovers. First of all in these loudspeakers I recommend turning the phase on the upper terminals.
hey haters...jbl still makes great stuff this is just entry level and i imagine the sound is good for the buck. well braced and decent foam plus large volume for bass....
Yah, I'm a hater! Those drivers could be bought for about 5 to 10 dollars each at most (consumer price) 1or2 dollars JBL price! The magnets are not as big as they look. That is shielding for old TVs.
You obviously know nothing about speakers. Large magnets aren't always needed and aren't necessarily a sign of good design or quality. You don't need to be a body builder to turn the page of a book, do you?
In South Africa the cost on this is R24000 +/-. I have a pair of NeXt speakers, way way way cheaper. I compared my speakers and the components of my speakers to the JBL 280 and all of a sudden I dont feel bad about my speakers. Great Channel !! Keep in mind that every manufacturer only spends about 1/5 of the price of the speaker on the cabinet and parts, drivers. That is why they use the cheapest crossover parts , cabinets, and drivers. If you have the skill to build cabinets you can have a much better speaker by getting a kit.
@@droidzhunterz6861 the best thing to do is replace the cheep crossover parts with better quality parts . As soon as you replace the drivers in a speaker you will need to design a new crossover . Watch Danny Richie's channel GR Research.

@@williamblackwell9558 No, it's not that easy and I advise agains making crossover mods without having a way of making measurements. Even if it's just replacing with lower ESR/DCR components, as the decreased impedance can make a filter overshoot (resonate) more, which can actually hurt the sound and, in the worst case, overheat the amp. The impedance of the components has been accounted for in the design.
when I was still working, I did some work at JBL in Northridge, Ca. This is not JBL. I also have some old school JBL, this is not JBL, I hope............
Is there a way to test the specs of a driver to see if it stayed on specs after all those years? I mean, yeah, we can test for continuity in the coil and even measure the DC resistance, but that's not all of it. I know professionally it can be done, but from an amateur point of view, is there something we can test with a simple multimeter? Thanks.
2 BASS drivers for each speaker? So 4 in total and after that are you still using a Subwoofer? Especially your bass drivers got pretty big magnetic. I made by myself Floorstanding speakers with 3 drivers+1 Tweeter, at first installed with 1 Bass+2 regular+1Tw and after that i couldn't hear any sound from my SUB. Speakers were taking all bass sound from Subwoofer and it was look like fake surround. So i used just all 3 reg+1tw and now they sound much better and i can hear Sub too.
Hello mere pas 5200 ka 8 mosfet wala amplifier he to mey 10inch aur 8inch woofer ka do box bana na chahta hu to mey yeh janna chahtahu k mey dono woofer kitni waat ka lagau.
Thanks for the look inside. Now I know to never buy JBL speakers. That background music was painful to sit through though. Don't know what you were thinking there...
They may be cheap, but you could easily upgrade all the components and chamber the Drivers to create more efficient sound. Or get rid of the bottom driver and find a decent 6.5 inch sub driver that will get down to 30-35hz and chamber that into a small ported system with pvc piping inside. Use the other driver crossed at 500hz-2,500hz Keep the midrange and upgrade a better crossover 2,500hz-10,000hz Replace that filling with foam inside. And scrap that tweeter for something like a real horn tweeter. The cabinets are good, and input terminals are good.
The only way to get the speakers that will rock your world is to get out and go listen to them before you buy. Reviews are helpful. But we each have our own opinion on what sounds good. A lot of reviewers have hidden agendas. Like they sell or get a comission for that particular brand or speaker. There are a lot of speakers out there that are very good. It's hard to find two different speakers that sound the same but both are very good sounding. You've got to listen to them before you buy. I learned the hard way.
Garbage advice. Since the frequency response of a speaker changes depending on the room dimensions it is placed in, you must test them in the actual room you intend to use them.
I bought a set of bose 301 v by listening to so called experts. Horrible sounding speakers. Like listening to a speaker with a muffler on it. So now I go check them out myself and what you hear is the what they could sound like. Maybe better at your place. At least you have a starting point. I'll never take the word of someone else again. Listen before you buy. Less likely to be disappointed and have to rebox and take back. I ended up with jbl 290s and 280s and couldn't be happier.
@@randywhite6539 Speakers you hear in a store will sound different in your room. That is well established a fact in the audio world, and why many companies offer try out periods with free return if it doesn't sound good in your living space.
@@droidzhunterz6861 You are right. Dimensions, carpet,no carpet, where funiture is placed, and even acoustic ceilings make a difference. Just like I have to move my speakers away from the back wall about twenty inches to get them to respond correctly. I spent hours arranging and rearranging. Someone else might come in and not like it. But to me it's my little piece of heaven. They can buy their own.

These are JBL entry level speakers and good for the price. Usually the cabinet is made in China but the drivers are USA made. I have some from back in 92 they are USA made drivers except the tweeter is a vifa titanium.
Pretty good value for money by comparison. drivers probably 120all in UK. crossovers 20 for both. then wood.... Most loudspeaker companies are 10 percent parts 90 percent everything else so these are good value for money.
Hola Tengo unas Polk Audio RtI-10 en una sala de 24m2. Qué te parece su calidad de sonido y construcción? Para mejorar en un sonido limpio y neutro qué me aconsejas? Gracias y un saludo desde España!
strange how jbl has lowered their standards so much i'm sure people would pay for an expensive jbl speaker. I have jbl l15 speakers, the cheapest that jbl had to offer in 1981 and those costed more than what these cost if you adjust for inflation. They do still remake their classic speakers like the l100 but it would be nice to see new designs from them with the excellent build quality they used to have with real wood veneer and made in America. It feels like they just use what's left of the reputation of jbl to market their cheap home and portable speakers.
The drivers probably cost no more than $50 in total. These are constantly on sale for more than 50% off. That means JBL is still making a profit on a steep price slash.
No bracing. Flimsy cabinet. No added mass to internal cabinet walls. No silicon gaskets. Low quality X over, full of elektrolitics, and by pass . A 20 euro solution, but JBL thinks about a cent of profit!!!! Real JBL costs 20.000 apiece
Yep, you are %100 right ! That crossover is a $15-20 and the worst quality with electrolytic capacitors... they didn't even use any MKT caps :) (and I'm not even mentioning MKP caps) That inductor coil is a joke... No need to comment on the drivers, pathetic !

Many modern tweeters now use neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets because they are 10 times as strong as a ferrite magnet (the black donut type) by weight, and that enables the motor assembly of the tweeter to be very small. A lot of OEM car audio and pro sound speakers are now using them because of the much lighter overall weight, however they are more expensive so in consumer products they are reserved for applications where mass reduction is of the most value.

More bracing than i would hv expected
The main disadvantage of inexpensive speakers is the crossovers. First of all in these loudspeakers I recommend turning the phase on the upper terminals.
Is this something an inexperienced layman can do? Asking for myself. Want to make the best of these speakers if I buy them.
One exception is Elac; especially when Andrew Jones was there.
hey haters...jbl still makes great stuff this is just entry level and i imagine the sound is good for the buck. well braced and decent foam plus large volume for bass....
Drivers is very simular, my tweeters is way better as well as my crossovers components is of higher standard.
It is mostly of brand or brand name. Never the less I am happy with my cheapie speakers.

I have the 290's. Was thinking of putting in better woofers. Do you think it would improve the sound?
@@droidzhunterz6861 the best thing to do is replace the cheep crossover parts with better quality parts . As soon as you replace the drivers in a speaker you will need to design a new crossover . Watch Danny Richie's channel GR Research.
JBL (Harman International) are now fully-owned by Samsung. Wouldn't be surprised if Samsung cut costs using Chinese OEM products and renaming / relabeling them.
@@williamblackwell9558
No, it's not that easy and I advise agains making crossover mods without having a way of making measurements. Even if it's just replacing with lower ESR/DCR components, as the decreased impedance can make a filter overshoot (resonate) more, which can actually hurt the sound and, in the worst case, overheat the amp.
The impedance of the components has been accounted for in the design.

Thanks.
No.
You can measure them with a (decent) PC sound card and some additional curcuitry though.
Wow I never knew this channel existed. It's so satisfying.

Excellent! Painstaking finishing.
I love this brand.
All electrolytic capacitors and mostly in-core inductors in the x-over = not really what I would call high-end.
They may be cheap, but you could easily upgrade all the components and chamber the
Drivers to create more efficient sound.
Or get rid of the bottom driver and find a decent 6.5 inch sub driver that will get down to 30-35hz and chamber that into a small ported system with pvc piping inside.
Use the other driver crossed at 500hz-2,500hz
Keep the midrange and upgrade a better crossover 2,500hz-10,000hz
Replace that filling with foam inside.
And scrap that tweeter for something like a real horn tweeter.
The cabinets are good, and input terminals are good.
I think i might try that. I have the larger 290 with dual 8", 3" midrange and same shitty tweeter, in a fake horn waveguide
What tweeters would you recommend for this speaker? Thanks

Pretty good value for money by comparison. drivers probably 120all in UK. crossovers 20 for both. then wood.... Most loudspeaker companies are 10 percent parts 90 percent everything else so these are good value for money.

strange how jbl has lowered their standards so much i'm sure people would pay for an expensive jbl speaker.
JBL now own by Samsung. portable speakers now is their main priority it seem.
Can you show The crossover conecction, please???

How much do these speakers cost? I would estimate that the drivers in total would be no more than $100, and $20 for the cabinet.
The drivers probably cost no more than $50 in total. These are constantly on sale for more than 50% off. That means JBL is still making a profit on a steep price slash.

Oreo cookie is bigger that that tweeter 😂
Many modern tweeters now use neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets because they are 10 times as strong as a ferrite magnet (the black donut type) by weight, and that enables the motor assembly of the tweeter to be very small. A lot of OEM car audio and pro sound speakers are now using them because of the much lighter overall weight, however they are more expensive so in consumer products they are reserved for applications where mass reduction is of the most value.
