A puncture hardly counts as 'broken' LOL. I regularly ride my Brommie on similar tracks, but never 'at speed'...and _always_ have a spare tube, pump & toolkit with me.
1) The Brompton toolkit fits into the frame & has everything to remove a wheel 2) The Marathon Plus tyres are tough 3) Swap out to the smaller chainring for going uphill
I also did a 102KM the day I got my Brompton, did a little stretch of gravel (~5KM) and didn't get a flat tire. But I wasn't going as fast as him and was being very careful on choosing my lines while offroad.
I’ve taken my Brompton off road a quite a bit and it’s very fun but it almost always ends in a puncture. Would be fun to see how a Brompton would get on on a BMX track
You need the Brompton toolkit that fits inside the top tube. It's all you need and you can't lose it or forget it. Also check out the Brompton Worlds. Great racing.
Mint this 😂 I am questioning my own pronunciation of Schwalbe now... We saying it like Dave "Schwalahbee" or "shwolb" 😂 Pissing at this. Howling. Thanks Broheim.
some time ago I was commuting to work and I saw someone on an e-bike on the side of the road with a flat. I thought I'd stop and give a hand. He showed me he had a spare tube and a pump. It's not easy to remove a rear wheel on an e-bike with the motor attached and so on. But he had a spare tube that you could place on the wheel, inside the tire WITHOUT removing the wheel. I was completely in shock. I had never, ever seen anything like it. It was an inner tube that looked like a balloon animal. CRAZY!!! So the guy cut the flat inner tube in two pieces, removed it from the wheel and replaced the inner tube without removing the wheel. I thought mountainbikes were high tech with al the springy and hydraulic things on it but e-bikes with balloon inner tubes... mental
I'm not sure anyone has correctly pronounced Schwalbe ever but that's the first time I've heard it sound so posh. Shwa Lah Bay daaaarling. It's similar to Nigella's pronunciation of Meecro Wah Vay (Microwave). I'm defo saying it Dave's way forever more!!!
Well I defo voted to see this snd got exactly what I wanted - randomnessnessness. Haha. Thanks. We need a report on how ‘shagged’ the tyre and rim were. Cheers
also, just replied to a GCN vid telling them to reach out to you mate :P Not to kill your channel but in my opinion the cyclists here and on other channels would love to see GCN add more Fixed/gravel and more diversity in a upfront honest way. I think you should have some guest appearances there and help gcn and this channel both. That or just contact Bald and bankrupt because to me you are like him but for cycling :P (dont think you will get him on a proper bike though) much appreciation here, been bingewatching your content since few weeks now, loved it all (tbh just made me feel like im not the only slacker cafe running cyclist on this globe)
Gotta feel for the dude on a racer you burnt off up the hill out of Paignton - on a Brompton! (Whilst complaining about it being hard work and slow!). Karma’s a bitch and I could sense him chanting something about punctures as you passed 😂
I’d like to see a Brompton in a wind tunnel. Tiny wheels, narrow bars and no down tube. Imagine the histeria if it came out more aero than a venge. You could have stuffed the tyre with long grass and ridden home.
Love it... You are really on to something here Dave. First, everesting on a Brompton, now Gravel. Whats next? Mtb trails? Red Hook Crit? Enduro? You will prob go through quite a few Bromptons hahaha Awesome video as always friend
The title made me watch...glad I did Your a right laugh bud Future note, always go tooled up, ready for the inevitable puncture. Did the rim and tyre survive?
Don't you have a patch kit (even the ones that don't need glue) as well as a spare tube? That way you could fix the puncture without taking the wheel out. I think you should do a club 10 on the Brompton. Fit your aero bars, make a ghetto disk wheel cover out of some cardboard and pretend it's some crazy TT machine! :)
@@DaveNoakes have you considered the marathon plus? They're supposed to be significantly more puncture-resistant and the tread looks a little more capable? I watched the brilliant bikes video and another one that I cannot recall and both said the new Continental is nearly as puncture resistant and more so than a basic Marathon but the tread is so smooth... even though everybody says it grips just as well as the marathon, don't understand it but I might very well go for the Continental next.
WHAT is the point of carrying an inner tube, without a spanner ? the golden rule is always carry you debit card or money plus your phone with you so at least you can still get to your destination by folding your cycle for a taxi. who said being optimistic is being forward looking.
So apart from the puncture (way to go puncturing a Schwable Marathon by the way) the conclusion is yes you can ride gravel on a Brompton. Answering the question we hadn't thought to ask, next one dirt jumps?
Ok, if you get a puncture and don’t have anything to fix it with, pack your tyre with grass and leaves and stuff to get home without ruining the tyre. Or just bring a puncture kit and pump you don’t need to take the wheel off to patch a tube. Oh don’t get the Brompton pump it’s shit. I’m now using a high pressure pump from decathlon that will actually get close to 100psi with a lot of effort
Fair Play Dave 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣(idiot) But a funny idiot or is it spanner 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👍 Bostin 👍Dave I’d get some pram wheels (small) and the Brompton wheels and make a go-cart 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Let's be honest here, Brommies weren't built for gravel but, having said that, they go all day long on reasonably hard off road trails if you keep the pace low and go carefully. I couldn't make up my mind whether you are a completely brainless numpty or on something. Or is this video a spoof wind up? A puncture isn't a broken bike, and if you don't want to ride home on your rim (matron!), take a few tools with you, basic stuff :)
Repent to Jesus Christ! Are you a sinner? Saint Luke 5:32 KJV I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Saint Luke 13:3 KJV I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.
Thanks for the video, Dave! I was sincerely interested to know how the Brompton would fair on gravel. Let's just say my suspicions about it's performance were mostly validated 😂- didn't expect a flat though! 🍻
Two things you could do there, take the tube out of the tire and knot it neat the hole, would probably seal enough to get home without the need to take the wheel off. Alternatively, pack the tyre with grass if the knot method fails :)
The Brompton did not break, did it? Your video title is misleading. Who goes out on any bike without the means to fix a puncture!!!!! Only one person I have ever heard of.
Hmmm naah it‘s not fun - it‘s lying sorry. You could also have titled with „… it WORKS - minus the puncture“ or something like that. Most of us would still have watched the video
Ah mate, I don't understand that stupid legend around the Schwalbe Marathons being bombproof. They're not! Each time I hit a tiny run of gravel path I am sure to get a puncture. I've had internal gearing and belt drive fitted on my Brompton, so the quick roadside tube replacement is not an option!
Idea: Find the nearest bus stop to your house, take the bus to the last stop and cycle home from it. Folders get you to places you normally can't reach.
Hi Dave, There is a very old get you home dodge which I have used myself in the past . You can leave the wheel in situ and just lever off one bead then using as much roadside vegetation as you need, stuff it into the tyre until it's as full as you can get it then re-seat the bead. It's a rim saver! Thanks for the posts you always cheer me up.

The 6 speed is able to climb near everything! I can walk faster than riding up! Finn. Denmark
Taking a 16 inch folding bike to a gravel trail, I had that experience once and my brain has not stopped vibrating in my head until now.
I think my brain also only just stopped vibrating 🤣😬
Any bike can have punctured tire, even gravel & MTB bike. I use airless tires on my Brompton, gravels are welcome… even nails for that matter.
Throw some nobblies on that sucker and a wider set of bars and your be onto a winner. Could you find any nobby tires?
Ohhhh now I’m checking. Maybe some kids bike sized ones.
honestly watching this vlog made me realise I was so lucky when I did a 100km with the brompton few weeks ago. At least I didn't get a flat tyre. 🤣😂😂
why would someone do that? haha nice one mate! you can walk atm or still sore?
i've raised money for Mind Charity. I mean I'd still do it tbh but not much uphill no. lol
I also did a 102KM the day I got my Brompton, did a little stretch of gravel (~5KM) and didn't get a flat tire. But I wasn't going as fast as him and was being very careful on choosing my lines while offroad.

Brompton toolkit ? Fits in the frame. Has all the spanners to remove wheels. Also has a patch kit. There's also a pumpt that fits the frame.

made me smile big time, thx for the video man!
Brompton do a tool kit that fits inside the frame. Also, you should try and get into the next Brompton world championships!
I think I have one of those at home somewhere 🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️😂 id like to enter, I think I need to get training.

what is the world hour record on a brompton?
The sound recording was excellent on this Dave...really added to the viewage experience. 👍🏽

Dave ive never seen anyone so happy after getting a flatty. Legend 🙌 funny vid though could of ended up sooooo worse than that 🤣 😂
lets be honest here.. he prob edited or just started recording like at least 5 mins later haha
but you are right, he is so positive and fun to watch.
0:43 I’m sure you climbed hills on a Brompton before?!? 😂😂
Maybe once
Mate this video was excellent. Fun, informative (well, sort of) and yeah, you have yourself a new subscriber from the great South West. 😂👍
That was a waste vision for something I already know.
He saw the random pump in a bucket, he showed us the random pump in a bucket, he even spoke about it, But he did not take the warning!!!
🤦🏻♂️😂😂😂that pump was cursed
I’m a spanner 🔧 😂
😂😂🤷🏻♂️
Tannus solid rubber "airless" tires make flats impossible. Guarantee wear of only 1.5mm in 5,000 miles.
140km in 4 days in the UK, with full front bag... this bike is great but absolutely exhausting 🥳
Regular ol' Whistlin Diesel! 😂🤙
Scwalbe Marathon PLUS where the best upgrade I have bought for my Brompton after endless flats

Very amusing, you take a flat much better than most. Next up... Brompton in a skatepark!

Crazy exploits on the Brompton Dave 💥
Maybe you should consider breaking something on every ride, Dave. It makes for interesting entertainment.🤣
So disappoint. I wanted to see the damage. JK. You never disappoint, Dave. Made me laugh.
