The fecklessness and incompetence of the Irish government. The Irish people who voted for the ruling parties should be ashamed of themselves.

The issue wasn't one off housing, they aren't prioritized and rightly so. It was entire towns and villages not having power and water for extended periods of time... Any sensible family living in one off housing should have a basic generator and supplies over the winter months ready as outage is expected. I'd actually wager the one off more "off grid" homes faired much better. Much more likely to have a solid fuel option and private water source.
Short of having specialist military helicopters fly in large generators is there no way to quickly deploy large equipment to areas with thousands of trees down over roads. Unprecedented hurricane force winds isn't something you can realistically expect a country to be prepared for and if they had of spent the hundreds of millions to do so in advance and nothing had happened you would be slighting them for wasting that money. Certainly a learning opportunity for the Gov and citizens as these extreme weather events are becoming more and more common place.

It's now 15 days I have no electricity, I have a 7 month old baby and a 2 year old toddler. We are sitting in the cold dark house. I've missed over two weeks of work because I work from home. I received no help from anyone. ESB is constantly lying and telling me they'll be out but it's now 15 days still no sign of them. I'm using my phone to write this while using my car's USB to charge my phone.

Look 5 years into the future and then head into the schools and colleges. Then you might get a future work force. Offer state back payment program for wages and not builders hiring and firing as the see fit. Stop losing control of the design or over design to be correct. Government get ready the sites and just let the builders do there work!
I built social houses in Belfast in the late 1980 and 1990s using 6 models of house ( allow handing of houses too) from the Housing executive,
1991 Cost £35,000 per house at the contractor point per house turn key. Repeated a similar for a housing association 156 units in 2019 cost was £75,000 per 120m2 house (trade and materials)

If we want to build, we need to reduce people's property rights. They are unreasonably strong in this country. NIMBYism needs to balanced with the right of people here to get a home. We also need to make saving for a home easier by reducing the requirements for deposits, otherwise we'll continue to transfer wealth from non homeowners to companies and home owners.
In Dublin, it is difficult to bild because of how old the city is, that's fair, but we need to build up far more than we are doing now. The time of three story apartments needs to go, we can't afford to take up valuable space and zone it for a small amount of people.
