I thoroughly enjoyed this interview, but watching it after the fact I can think of many things I wish I'd said. I served very close to two major tragedies in my life...the kind of events that everyone remembers where they were and what they were doing when they heard about them.
When the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded, I was the primary USAF network controller for the mission. Launching rockets to put satellites in orbit was a very exciting job for a young lieutenant, but that tragedy was a very difficult thing to work through. It left me with a sobering sense of duty knowing my work could mean life or death for others.
On September 11, 2001 I was stationed at Fort Belvoir, VA, as a professor of leadership and program management for DAU. My home was near Mount Vernon, 7 miles from the pentagon. Neighbors who were at home heard the explosion when the plane hit the Pentagon. A student at my son's school lost his dad there. It was another very sobering time to be on active duty that changed me forever.
Shortly after that our neighborhood was rocked by anthrax in our mail. The official adoption papers for our daughter were impounded because they were at one of the postal processing centers where anthrax spores sickened employees.
I could have spoken at length about these experiences, but I guess the 2 hour interview is already long enough. :) As I listened I cringed at three errors I made--the kind of thing that is so obvious to me that I can't believe I said it. The words coming out of my mouth don't even match what was going through my brain. Most of you have probably experienced similar episodes. Anyway, when I said my wife had a PhD I was actually thinking about my sister. My wife has a bachelor's degree that she worked very hard for, but not a PhD. I also said my brother and sister had 3 children each when I know very well they only have 2 each. Finally, when I was speaking about my training in a simulated POW camp, I said it lasted a year! I've no idea where that came from. It seemed like an eternity, but it was only 3 days.
    I hope you enjoy listening.

Bad interviewer. Talks too much about himself.

The interviewer was young and inexperienced, but he's a great guy--very respectful and caring. He sincerely wants to honor those who served our nation. Thank you for viewing and commenting!
