I was so happy when Elton John stepped up and treated Leon with the respect and admiration he richly deserved. Leon played on a thousand records. Nobody like him.
Leon Russell was, and still is, one of my favorite artists. It’s a shame more people haven’t heard Leon. Take a deep dive into the Leon Live double album from 1973. That’s what it was like to see Leon Live back in the early 1970’s. Elton John was heavily influenced by Leon. In fact, Elton opened for Leon in 1970. I used to get tickets for any line up that Leon Russell was in. In fact, I had tickets to see him in hand when he passed away. I so agree about the line, “I love you in a place where there’s no space and time.” Leon was nicknamed the Master of Space and Time.
Leon Russell was an American musician & songwriter who was involved with numerous bestselling records during his 60-year career. He recorded at least 31 albums & 430 songs. He collaborated with many notable artists such as Joe Cocker, The Beach Boys, Jan & Dean, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, George Harrison, Elton John, Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra, Ike & Tina Turner, The Rolling Stones & so many more.
60 years! .. That's amazing! This is what I say all the time .. Leon/60 years, Neil Diamond/50+ years, Elton John/50+ years and a few more TRUE and TALENTED artists from our generation still performing LIVE and/or at least recording music. Most artists today would be lucky if they had enough staying power to last 25 years and still draw a crowd.
Leon was such a talented musician, songwriter and singer. Love his voice. The raw and real emotion he could exude within his unique sound. I always felt sad that he wasn’t given the credit he deserved for all that talent. He had such a lovely way of writing that could capture one upon hearing. One of my faves.
Saw Leon and it was an experience I have cherished forever. Leon such a gifted musician and soulful singer. My goodness I never wanted the concert to end!!! RIP Leon , " where there's no space or time" ♡♡♡
I was fortunate enough to see this legend several times. Mad dogs and Englishmen with Joe cocker , solo and with Dave Mason who is a legend himself. This song brings me to tears every time I hear it. As it describes my quarter century failed marriage. I love you where there’s no space and time. And when my life is over …. Crushing
The most famous hit of the king of rock 'n' roll in an unrivaled gorgeous, phenomenal performance by Diana Ankudinova ( 18 y.o.) Can’t Help Falling in Love (Elvis Presley / DARK VERSION cover) Please react to Diana Ankudinova ! She is called the queen of goosebumps, a unique voice - contralto with polyphonic overtones. Full vocal range - 4 octaves (E3-E7) She has insane and unique vocals and great stage presence and her performances (from the show You are Super ! ( win twice, 14 and15 y.o. ) and ShowMASKgoOn (win 18 y.o.) are gorgeously choreographed and you should find them very interesting. This is from the Homewood Sessions available on youtube. Truly one of the greatest songwriters and pianists of our time. Listen to Homewood and Sam Cooke's "Bring It On Home To Me" with Lou Rawls on backup vocals. I was so fortunate to have seen Leon many times, and he never disappointed. The first time was in Macon, GA in 1976 on the "Wedding Tour," shortly after he had married Mary McCreary (who was black). Only about 1,000 people showed up in an 11 thousand-seat venue (racism played a HUGE part in the low turnout), and I feel pity for those who missed this show because of that. Iron Maiden opened for him (which was just TOO weird), but, when he took the stage, he asked that the house lights be turned up so he could see the "crowd." He just said, "Well, bless y'all's hearts. Come on down front and we gone have us a party." Best $5.50 I ever spent.
Enjoyed this video. Leon got around, probably the most extensive recording catalog of any person that ever lived. BTW, Russell's signature nickname was "Master of space and time".
I'm fortunate to have seen Leon countless times over the years. The last time was in Englewood Florida, I got back stage after the show as he was walking out and said "hey Leon" he turned around and I said "Thank you" he said "why" or something like that, and I replied "For another great show and all the fond memories, goodnight" he smiled and we waved goodbye
"I know your image of me is what I hope to be." One of the most beautiful song lyrics ever written, IMO. There is another live version of this song featuring Leon, Willie Nelson and Ray Charles that will bring you to tears as well.
You can hear why Elton John loved this guy's piano playing. Leon wrote/co-wrote some of the best music to come out of the last fifty years; A Song for you, This Masquerade by Geo Benson, notably; Superstar (The Carpenters); Hummingbird (BB King's breakout hit, Joe Bonamassa does a great live version) and Delta Lady (Joe Cocker). RIP Leon.
Leon Russell wrote this song & many more that have been covered by various artists over the years. The last album Leon Russell put out before passing away with brain cancer was "On A Distant Shore". The version of this song on that album is very moving considering Leon knew he his cancer was terminal. The cover song is also very powerful. I am from Oklahoma & I constantly hear about how rich this state has been for musical talent. Then nothing but country & western artist are mentioned. I would like to remind people of artists like Leon Russell, David Gates & others so they aren't forgotten.
Leon didn't have brain cancer. He had a heart attack in June 2016 and had quadruple heart surgery. He was expected to make a recovery but sadly didn't. He did have brain surgery, just as he was starting the recording, The Union, with Elton. It was for leaking fluid which he had several times during his life.
This live version is more raw than the studio version on his album. You nailed it, one of the greatest songs ever. The Carpenters also covered this a year later.
Leon started out with The Wrecking Crew, and was a legendary piano player with them for a good while. About the same time as Glen Campbell. First noticed him at Concert for Bangladesh, and a huge fan ever since. RIP to the Master of Time & Space; your music will still be loved 100 years from now.
Love, love, love Leon! You should watch his performance from A Concert for Bangladesh… on a stage with many legends, Leon steals the show effortlessly, it’s incredible!
The Master of Space and Time. An American original and icon. Glad to see folks discover him. Unbelievable talent.. Played the piano on 100s of hits with The Wrecking Crew before he went solo. ... Fun Fact: at one point in the 70s Leon was the top grossing touring artist in the world.
Have always loved the lyrics of this song. His performance is amazing. The Carpenters do a beautiful cover of it as well. It's a very similar arrangement but add in Karen's voice and their lush harmonies.
I first saw Leon back in the mid-60s in the Jackie Gleason Theater in Fla. A little gnome of a guy standing at the piano with his waist length white hair in a red, white and blue top hat. Screaming and pounding on his piano, he looked like a crazed leprechaun. He really shines with his honkytonk and gospel-infused stuff like Shootout on the Plantation, Roll Away the Stone and Stranger in a Strange Land. His background singers, three sweet-voiced black women who rocked the stage like you were in a gospel show and interacted with Leon all the while, turned the show into a religious experience for a 14-year-old who had never heard either Leon or gospel music. It is a moment in time that changed my life. R.I.P. Leon, "The Master of Time & Space".
Melissa Ward here. We were lucky to see him twice in a small venue, blues and jazz club. Sat right up close to him and his piano. It was a divine experience. Such a kind man too. As I say, we were truly lucky. May he rest peacefully. He really was just cool. Beautiful song. On e of my favorites.
I think Leon was definitely in touch with strong faith and heart and soul poured into his songs AND his tremendous piano playing. BTW The Carpenters recorded it and that’s when I heard it. But this is what Leon referred to in his words, a standard that Frank Sinatra could sing. I think that line about love from a place where there’s no space and time is profound, especially from a man who was lovingly referred to as The Master of Space and time.
Do Leon’s “tight rope” then and then compare it to his induction into the to rock and roll hall of fame. Check out the long version.entered into the long version to that same song.
Harri, your reaction and comments about Leon and this song are so dead-on. Raw emotion is maybe the best description I've seen. Thank you. GT p.s. I specifically looked to see only your reaction to this masterpiece.
Leon was so hot that during George Harrison’s CONCERT FOR BANGLADESH”, Leon lit the place singing “Young Blood”. It’s said the temperature in the room went up 15 degrees. Wish I’d been there.
Great reaction. You really got it. One of the best performances and song by him. You appreciated the voice, piano playing and deep song writing. And the inspired lyric: I love you in a place where there's no space. I'm so grateful this video is preserved for all time on RUclips. Thank you.
With you on this one Harri…. Best lyrics ever. “I love you in a place that has no space or time…” Please check out Lady Blue and Back To The Island studio versions. Also Harri, don’t miss the Ray Charles version of Song for You…. I think it’s my favorite. Ray’s got more soul than he can control!
It's amazing the impact someone like Leon can have on the music industry, and yet still be so unknown. You should check out mad dogs and englishmen it's when he and Joe Cocker were playing together.
I saw Leon Russell in Rochester, NY, in 1975. Great piano player and did some great writing, too. You have to check out "Lady Blue" and "Stranger in a Strange Land."Thanks, Harri!
I love this song so much! It is my second favorite song of my whole life! The first is Your song, by Elton John. Interestingly, they both have the same theme! My favorite line is "If my words don't come together, listen to the melody 'cause my love's in there hiding"
Leon is pure- Another gem song writer is David Goodman. He wrote the made famous song City of new orleans sung by Arlo Guthrie and many others. "City of New Orleans" is a country folk song written by Steve Goodman (and first recorded for Goodman's self-titled 1971 album), describing a train ride from Chicago to New Orleans on the Illinois Central Railroad's City of New Orleans He died young but will not be forgotten. Cheers
“In the later 60's and early 70's, the one piano player and vocalist who influenced me more than anybody else was Leon Russell-he was my idol” -- Elton John. “He was my idol. To meet him, I was shaking. He sang, he wrote and he played just how I wanted to do it … He could eat me for breakfast [playing piano].” -- Elton John. Russell’s piano keeps the bright organ and the backing rhythm tied together on a little Beach Boys song called “California Girls”, too. Elton John, Barbara Streisand, Frank Sinatra, Glenn Campbell, Doris Day, Willie Nelson, Badfinger, The Rolling Stones, the list goes on. Everyone in the game knew Russell, and they all felt a surge of energy whenever he sat down at the keys.
My friends dad owned a high end stereo/audio equipment store in Tulsa in the 70’s and Leon would come in and buy equipment. As a teenager I was awestruck
You should read more information about Leon's accomplishments. Especially the songs he wrote for other artists. He was unbelievably talented on multiple instruments.
You should react to the rock and roll hall of fame performance of this song by Leon Russell featuring John Mayer it brings a tear to my eye every time.
He has been around for a very long time, and early on he was primarily a session keyboard player and played on hundreds of popular records, many many that you would know. Like Bob Dylan he wasn't known for being a singer but was known for songwriting. Not only did he write this, he also wrote Superstar. Check out the Carpenters version, it is awesome.!
Please, please, please. Leon performed this song, along with Willie Nelson singing, for Ray Charles on his eightieth birthday. It is so touching, and heartbreaking because we know Ray would not be with us much longer. Willie was close to tears. I know you will love seeing them all together as they perform their love for Ray. Not almost, he is baring his soul. That run at the end, that was no easy thing. He was a very accomplished pianist. And of course, Leon also is no longer with us.
I suggest Delta Lady,Roll Away the Stone and Hard Rain. Leon Russell was a true musical genius you truly have so many choices, these are just a few of my favorites.
Hi, please make a reaction to Diana Ankudinova, a unique singer. A vocalist with a unique contralto voice. You will enjoy her voice, she is excellent on stage, you can see for yourself. Pay attention to this video from her official website, the link at the bottom, in my answer. Thanks. Happy New Year to you. Good luck.
He's a star ,that alot of people don't know about...Even though they heard him on piano,, many songs.. BACK TO THE ISLAND BY THE GREAT LEON RUSSELL... RIP L.R.☮️. There is a vid. Of this song with LEON RUSSELL ,,,WILLIE NELSON ,, AND MR. RAY CHARLES... ☮️🙏
Leon played on far more records than most can imagine, as he was one member of the Wrecking Crew. He was exactly how he appeared, cocky and so down-to-earth. I had the good fortune to meet him through a mutual friend Mack Rebennack (Dr. John.) His album "Carney" is one of the greatest albums ever - IMHO.
Leon was my cousin on my mother's side. Gentle, thoughtful, intelligent and so incredibly talented human being.
Missing him.
I was so happy when Elton John stepped up and treated Leon with the respect and admiration he richly deserved. Leon played on a thousand records. Nobody like him.
Like Clapton did with Leon's buddy, and fellow Tulsa native, JJ Cale.
(Look for the live JJ Cale set in Leon's basement that's on YT. Sublime)
Leon Russell was, and still is, one of my favorite artists. It’s a shame more people haven’t heard Leon. Take a deep dive into the Leon Live double album from 1973. Saw him twice in the 70s. Love him!
Did you know Leon Russell wrote This Masquerade, made famous by George Benson? My favorite song written and sung by Leon is Lady Blue
"Lady Blue" is in my top favorites of all the songs I've ever heard.
Leon Russell was an American musician & songwriter who was involved with numerous bestselling records during his 60-year career. He recorded at least 31 albums & 430 songs. My fav tidbit, Leon played the organ on Bobby Picket's hit, Monster Mash.
Leon was such a talented musician, songwriter and singer. Love his voice. The raw and real emotion he could exude within his unique sound. I always felt sad that he wasn’t given the credit he deserved for all that talent. He had such a lovely way of writing that could capture one upon hearing. One of my faves.
The raw emotion makes me cry every time
I am a Leon fan, and this by far his/THE best version of this song. Thank you for honoring it Harri. Blessings brother.
" I love you in a place where there's no space and time " greatest lyric ever in my opinion
Leon is so soulful. What beautiful words and melody. Great analysis Harri!
Written and sang by Mr. Leon Russell.
What a guy, what a song, what a life.
An absolute AMAZING musician!!
You should definitely listen to all of Leon as you can find!
Saw Leon and it was an experience I have cherished forever. Leon such a gifted musician and soulful singer. My goodness I never wanted the concert to end!!!

I love that version. And in that video you get to see Willie tearing up as Ray sings this song.
Got you see Leon a few times. Always a great show. RiP
@@TimoeltejanoWillie was tearing up because he Knew Ray was not long in this world. It's a love song to his long-time friend, before "goodbye". 😢

He was so gifted! Love and miss him! Thank God his music lives on. He had beautiful eyes!!!
He did have beautiful eyes and nice thick hair.

Yes, Leon wrote this song. I love the bluesy/ jazzy tone of this original. And the words! This is the only version I ever heard.
My favorite! I saw Leon twice in the early 1970s and then so grateful to see him again 6 months before he passed…was still dynamite!❤️

The Master of Space and Time. An American original and icon. Glad to see folks discover him. Unbelievable talent..

...
Fun Fact: at one point in the 70s Leon was the top grossing touring artist in the world.
You can feel the tears and sadness in his version...listen to the words
How lovely those lyrics are. The raw sound of his voice really makes you pay attention to the lyrics. Gorgeous stuff.
Have always loved the lyrics of this song. His performance is amazing. The Carpenters do a beautiful cover of it as well. It's a very similar arrangement but add in Karen's voice and their lush harmonies.
One of the most stunning love songs ever written and performed.
Leon’s version is the best because it’s raw and personal. All others mentioned are beautiful but Leon ‘s version is so unique
Harri, thanks for this one. My sister was a huge Leon Russell back in the day. RIP Susan.
The Carpenters also covered this beautifully. This, theirs snd Donny Hathaway's ... all different and all beautiful
I first saw Leon back in the mid-60s in the Jackie Gleason Theater in Fla. A little gnome of a guy standing at the piano with his waist length white hair in a red, white and blue top hat. such a class act all the way around! RIP Leon! Were still listening!

I love Leon Russell, this song is so sweet.. He sings it so intimately.
I love his music, he was one of a kind
My favorite lyric of all! To even conceive of a place where there’s no space and time is mind blowing!
Leon, such talent.
Love this song too ❤
Only Leon Russel can sing this song right. Even Karen Carpenter couldn't do it right. It's all his.. From his soul.
His iconic voice!!
Do Leon’s “tight rope” then and then compare it to his induction into the to rock and roll hall of fame. Check out the long version.entered into the long version to that same song.
Leon was the Man.
MASTERPIECE
Give his Stranger In A Strange Land a try. Totally wonderful!
Harri, your reaction and comments about Leon and this song are so dead-on. Raw emotion is maybe the best description I've seen. Thank you. GT
I agree. I love his "Tightwire," too, plus these others.
Great reaction. You really got it. One of the best performances and song by him. You appreciated the voice, piano playing and deep song writing. And the inspired lyric: I love you in a place where there's no space. I'm so grateful this video is preserved for all time on RUclips.
Thank you.
What a gem - I discovered him too late…
With you on this one Harri…. Best lyrics ever. “I love you in a place that has no space or time…” Please check out Lady Blue and Back To The Island studio versions. Also Harri, don’t miss the Ray Charles version of Song for You…. I think it’s my favorite. Ray’s got more soul than he can control!
The Ray Charles version is gorgeous... The orchestral arrangement with Ray's impeccable vocals is one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded, IMO.
My #1 favorite song in the world by Leon Russell! thank you.
BTW Leon wrote the song!
The Greatest
It's amazing the impact someone like Leon can have on the music industry, and yet still be so unknown. You should check out mad dogs and englishmen it's when he and Joe Cocker were playing together.
Thanks for playing the OG, Leon Russell.
He’s has written many songs for many artist you would never thought did. I loved him in my high school days
Great distinction between Leon and Donnies version. And that lyric is one of the best. His piano playing is fantastic.
Leon started in a band called Mad dog and the Englishmen whose lead singer was Joe Cocker
I saw Leon Russell in Rochester, NY, in 1975. Great piano player and did some great writing, too. You have to check out "Lady Blue" and "Stranger in a Strange Land."Thanks, Harri!
Leon Russell will forever be known as “Master of Space & Time”. I have a T-Shirt with his face & that title emblazoned on it.
This is a masterpiece of songwriting.
Yep, Leon wrote this. Great reaction to an amazing song. Thanks!
The master of space and time. The most beautiful of songs. Who else? Leon Russell
I love this song so much! It is my second favorite song of my whole life! The first is Your song, by Elton John. Interestingly, they both have the same theme! My favorite line is "If my words don't come together, listen to the melody 'cause my love's in there hiding"
Willie Nelson and Ray Charles do a redition...phenomenal. Thanx for this Hari..
Leon is pure- Another gem song writer is David Goodman. He wrote the made famous song City of new orleans sung by Arlo Guthrie and many others.

The Master of Space and Time. A fave to play back in the day. ;>D
Love Leon. I was privileged to see him live only months before he passed away . My favorite is "Back to the Islands"
I saw Leon perform as an old man. He still had it... BIG TIME It was a GREAT night. Leon wrote it and sang it GREATLY!
My favorite version of A Song For You is by your boy Willie Nelson. Just a man with a guitar singing a love song to his audience
Leon Russell! Enough said!
Harri….you’re the best

You have to do the original version sung by Donny Hathaway. Amazing song. This is the one you need to hear.
Thank you Harri! Wonderful analysis!
My friends dad owned a high end stereo/audio equipment store in Tulsa in the 70’s and Leon would come in and buy equipment. As a teenager I was awestruck
Listen to his solo album, so personal. His life.
You should read more information about Leon's accomplishments. Especially the songs he wrote for other artists. He was unbelievably talented on multiple instruments.
Nice Going.......
Another under rated artist ... He went to the same high school with JJ Cale man they made some great tunes together
Tulsa Sound!
Leon was a one of a kind. A religious rock and roller. Sang from his soul. I always enjoy his music.
Leon Russell is a Nat'l treasure. You should check out his songs Tightrope, Delta Lady, Lady Blue or Roll Away the Stone.
The Carpenters covered this song in 1972 on their album called A Song For You and took it to #1!
Tightrope and Delta Lady next. Up on a tightrope one side's hate and one is hope.
Please, please, please. Leon performed this song, along with Willie Nelson singing, for Ray Charles on his eightieth birthday. Leon does another awesome song back to the island also Lady Blue. Harry, check them out. You’ll love them
Hi, please make a reaction to Diana Ankudinova, a unique singer. A vocalist with a unique contralto voice. You will enjoy her voice, she is excellent on stage, you can see for yourself. Pay attention to this video from her official website, the link at the bottom, in my answer. Thanks. Happy New Year to you. Good luck.
Leon wrote this song about the beautiful singer, Rita Coolidge. You should react to some of her videos.
