  • What can the visit of US President Joe Biden to Belfast do for peace in Northern Ireland and to help restore the government there?
Amist a huge security operation, the President arrived last night to mark the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday peace agreement.
For those born after the Agreement was signed, it was hoped their lives would be free of brutal sectarian conflict that scarred the generations before them.
Radio 1 Newsbeat’s politics reporter Jordan Kenny was born in 1998 after the agreement was signed. He has been talking to other young people like him about what it means to be a so-called ‘peace baby’ in a place still grappling with its past, and what the future of this still-divided nation could hold.

It's sad to see young people internalise the rhetoric older people throw around about them being ignorant and whatnot. You are very self aware, thoughtful and inspiring. To all other teens and young people - don't let anyone look down on you or your whole age group because of their shallow beliefs. You are just as smart as previous generations.

What a load of nonsense! I'm not a peace baby, I grew up in the troubles. One thing I never had to deal with was a police helicopter flying over my house for hours everyday like I have done this last 2 weeks. I didn't have police landrovers up and down my street several times a day either. What this doesn't tell you is that they moved these paramilitary groups away from christian fundamentalism and set them up in the drug business, bravo. The streets and communities are now run by cocaine, heroin and a bunch rebels without a cause.

The Provisional Irish Republican Army and the Irish National Liberation Army were not Christain fundamentalists, nor were either guided by any fundamentalist Christain doctrine. Yes, both insurgent groups' membership was overwhelmingly Catholic, however, that was coincidence and not a deliberate goal either organizations Army Council. The main ideological glue of both the PIRA and INLA was ethno-nationalism, they were no different to any other anti-colonial movement in the post-World War Two era seeking to assert sovereignty over their nation and expel the foreign colonial occupier.

lol this is a very cleansed segment by the BBC especially when they went to Derry. Dare I say bias. That parade has been happening for years only now they make a big thing of it. Throwing petrol and paint bombs at police is very common in both communities and nearly all done by teenagers. Maybe if Parliament invested more into Northern Ireland and tackled the economic conditions this would be a less of a problem but there's only so many resources, so people naturally are more tribal not to mention 800 years or so of generational trauma to reinforce it.
